Aims

  • Be as entertaining as possible
  • Play on hardest difficulty (Gamer)
  • 100% kills
  • Never take damage
  • Fast as possible
U.N. Squadron is one of the first side-scrolling shooters to come out for the Super Nintendo and also one of my favorite games as a kid. This game is also known as "Area 88" in Japan. Brief overview of the story: some ruthless group of mercenaries known as "Project 4" are out to take over the world and you're the only one who can stop them. Made in Snes9X v1.43+, this is a long-term project I started over 2 years ago. I worked on it on and off but didn't get around to completing until recently. Since this is a side-scrolling shooter, my main goal was to be *entertaining* as opposed to "fast": 100% of enemies are killed, took no damage while flirting with death many many times, abused a special weapon reload exploit to kill bosses faster than humanly possible (explained later).
Being fast was a secondary goal I strived for, particularly with the boss fights. Prior to undertaking a stage, the number of special weapons required to kill the boss as quickly as possible is pre-planned and calculated. Then the remaining special weapons have to be exhausted during the stage to get all weapon counters to 0. This saves a bunch of frames at the end of the stage when it counts up your unused weapons. There are a total of 10 stages but only the necessary 8 are completed. It's possible if someone is a master manipulator of luck and lag, they may be able to beat the total time by a couple seconds.

How the bosses are defeated quickly

Some basic game info before I explain as this is very important. All enemies in this game, including bosses, are invulnerable for 2 frames after taking damage. So essentially to kill them as quickly as possible, you need to hit them with high-damage weapons every 3 frames. Your main cannon once it hits level 3+ fires every 8 frames. Each special weapon has it's own reload time: bombs = 10 frames, falcons = 20 frames, phoenix = 40 frames, etc. The "one-hit" specials like bombs, falcons, phoenix do a lot of damage... the "multiple-hit" specials like napalm, cluster do pitiful damage so these aren't really used.
For stage 1,2 bosses, alternating timed cannon shots and bombs were used. Every shot/bomb registered a hit and none were wasted during the "invulnerable" frames.
For stage 3,4,7,8 bosses, the "reload exploit" was abused. When you use one special weapon, ordinarily you'd have to wait many frames before you can use it again. But the reload counter doesn't apply to the other specials, so you can switch to a different special and use that right away. Using frame advance, time the cannon shots with two different special weapons in between to achieve maximum damage in the shortest amount of time.
Special thanks to skamastaG for giving me ideas for making an entertaining final stage run.

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. Oh! I also replaced the ROM name.
  • You indicated U.N. Squadron (U).smc
  • I updated it to U.N. Squadron (U) [!].smc

Truncated: This has gotten a lot of positive votes in a short time, especially for an auto-scroller. Accepting.

As much as I love shooters, euroshmups aren't really my cup of tea. Nevertheless, this was an entertaining enough watch; I liked the ammo management (too bad you always had more money than you could spent, haha) and the antics the craft's small hitbox allowed you to perform in the later stages, so I'm giving it a mild yes vote.

This is a pretty good example that shooting games can be pretty entertaining. One example is when you taunt your enemies by easily avoiding their projectiles. I vote yes and I hope this motivates someone to work on Super R-Type.

My initial reaction was "Oh GAWD! Not 20 minutes of this!?" but it's actually not uninteresting as a TAS, it turns out. Georgexi played this game like a violin from hell. Literally! It was surprisingly very good, and my attention didn't flag much until the laggy bits in the last level, so I give it Yes vote. *crosses fingers for a 2-player Bio-Hazard battle run*

I was so close to stop watching at around frame 30000, but then came that first cavern look-a-like level and something happened. Doubt turned into excitement, and this turned out to be a really entertaining run.

Well, I enjoyed levels 3, 5 and 8, other levels were kinda Meh. BTW, there was funny moment at the end. When the movie stopped, I played with controls a couple of seconds and then suddenly next level appeared, and ship continued to play on its own. I was like "WTF, the movie didn't stop?!" But finally it appeared to be ending demonstration, but hey, that was strange feeling. :) Voting Yes bordering with Meh.

Loved watching this TAS. Two concerns: 1) You say 100% kills, but you skipped two of the levels. I wouldn't expect you to play the optional Truck level, of course. 2) I'm surprised at your choice of plane for the last two levels. Wouldn't having the level 6 Vulcan kill the bosses faster, or does it make no difference?

Maybe the forums will actually post this when it says it will! This was an easy Yes vote for me. I wish you had done the air duel level with all the purple bombers, but it's no big deal. During the Frigate boss fight, isn't there a score star hidden somewhere near the control tower? If so, could you have gotten it without losing time? I think it would be rad if you could tack on another 10000 points or whatever.

It was a good run, felt a bit stale at first but, like the other viewers said, it got better as it went along. I liked your management of your weapons, seemed like you always ended a level with nothing left. An entertaining run, yes vote.

Thanx for all the comments guys.. both positive and negative. Some of the stages didn't have as much action so I did what I could with what they threw at me while satisfying the requirements. I was hopin utterly annihilating the bosses quickly would provide the entertainment for the "slower" stages. Perhaps that's something only fans of the game would appreciate.

By 100% kills, I meant every plane, helicopter, tank, etc was destroyed in the stages played. Even the boss "minions" are killed. I picked the Tigershark for the last two levels because of the special weapons. The cannon alternating with bombs, falcons, phoenix is by far the fastest way to kill the bosses. Level 6 cannon does a little more damage than the level 5 but not nearly enough damage to justify having no bombs and fewer falcons/phoenix.

Doing the other two levels would've made the video longer than needed... I did consider it though. I tried to find a way to avoid the stealth bomber stage but no luck. I do know about that star next to the smoke stack on the battleship but it only appears on the 2nd pass and unfortunately he doesnt survive that long :)

Very entertaining run. Yes vote :D I'm glad I could help you in some small way. Your final level was definitely more entertaining than mine, but at times it appeared laggier. I am not too sure of this though and either way it was worth it. Great job!

Aw man, I've been waiting like 2 years for this. If it's anything like the WIPs I'll be voting a big yes.

While U.N. Squadron isn't my favorite flying shooter on the SNES (I give that to Phalanx), I can say I enjoyed this run. It was well played and very well thought out. Great job. YES vote.

That was fantastic. Lots of spots where I wondered if the movie was desyncing cause of the crazy stuff you were doing. I haven't seen flying that whacked out since the Area 88 anime. Major yes vote. I have one minor gripe, though; personally, I wouldn't call this a 100% kills run, not because you skipped two stages, but because on the forest stage and Project 4 HQ bosses, you didn't take out all of the components. But of course that's just my opinion.

What a coincidence...this game is based on that series! If you look into it, you'll see that the Japanese version is actually called Area 88. =) And add another emphatic Yes! -Josh
but then you take my 75 perchance chance of winning, if we was to go one-on-one, and then add 66 and two-thirds ch...percents...i got a 141 and two-thirds chance of winning at sacrifice

Thanx for the yes votes guys :) It's encouraging to see people enjoy the video and all that hard work is paying off. I voted yes for myself... is that illegal? lol If I had to pick one of the bot screenshots to use for the submission pic, it would be this one:

I think I'd rather see a screenshot of weaving between bullets launched from multiple cannons in that level, something that looks like it came from a bullet hell shooter...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, shmups.com has gotten to you moozooh. Anyways, I'll watch this later tonight. I remember the WIPs of the first two or three levels being impressive.
