This is a 2p run of Streets of Rage, it beats the current movie by over 10 mins or 36577 frames to be exact
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Plays on hardest difficulty
  • One player controls two characters.
  • Abuses programming errors
  • Contains entertainment trade offs
  • Manipulates luck
  • Contains death abuse
  • Takes damage to save time (also done for entertainment purposes)

AKA's Comments...

I've been wanting to do a TAS of this game ever since I joined the site, but I was always hesitant to do so, since I didn't know what the best strategies were, the current run is one of the oldest on the site and is known to be massively improvable for a long time. Sprint, the author of the published run knew above all how much his run could be improved and he was probably biggest help since he theorized a lot of better strategies which I tested and proved would be of benefit. Also this is a prime example where a 2p run is significant better and more fun to watch compared to a 1p run. The current movie generally uses similar strategies throughout and plays for fastest time; while our movie uses much more varied strategies containing several trade off's throughout, but still keeps a fast pace throughout. This is probably the most enjoyable run I've worked on since I wasn't stressing over trying to shave frames and the game allows a lot of stylistic choices to be implemented without incurring time. Chemist found a glitch in the last level which cuts the level short, I'm not going to go into great detail about it, but normally when a character goes above or below the screen then its instant death, except from the last level. I think its probably related to the trap door during the Mr X speech. If you decide to join him he opens a trap door sending you back to level 6 so some data gets written. But in this case no data gets written and the game somehow thinks you've completed the level.

Mukki's Comments...

Streets of Rage is one of my favorite games for the Sega Megadrive/Genesis. When I first discovered this site one of the first runs I watched was Sprint's TAS of this game. Unfortunately, that run, albeit unbeknown to me at the time, was suboptimal and subenjoyable (judging by the ratings). As I became more knowledgeable and opinionated about TASes the more I wanted to improve Sprint's movie. Don't get me wrong, I did certainly enjoy his movie, however I felt that a 2-player TAS could offer so much more. Firstly, it was the two-player mode that made me love this game. When playing with friends we'd always spend more time attacking each other rather than the enemies. It's what made the game funny and exciting. I felt that a TAS could do this better. Secondly, I knew the game could be beaten much faster, even before Chemist discovered the level 8 glitch. Sprint's run was half an hour long and, to those not familiar with the game, rather uninteresting and repetitive in places (especially level 8). This run is a pocket-sized 20 minutes and doesn't feel as bulky because the lengthy eighth level is effectively skipped. I would also say that this was probably the most enjoyable TAS I've worked on. Whilst TASing my efforts were geared more towards a kind of choreography rather than ripping my hair out over frame perfection. Having said that every effort was made to make this run as optimal as possible without loss in entertainment. This has been the movie I've been hoping to make for a while now as it gave me considerable freedom to be creative. I hope you all enjoy the results.

Thanks to...

Sprintgod: He came up with a lot useful strategies that were used in this run
Truncated: For making a damage table showing how much damage certain attacks and weapons do
Chemist: He found a glitch on the last level which saved 6-7 mins

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. I'm not sure I got the right ROM though. (I tried Streets of Rage (W) (REV00) [!].gen, which was the closest match to what you wrote.) Well, here goes! Feel free to clean up the list.

Truncated: Slight overuse of the team special, and the bosses are a little disappointing. But all in all it's a huge improvement over the current movie, both in time and in entertainment. Accepting.

Nice run, congrats on making SOR look like one hell of a bowling match LOL. The only thing I felt slightly out of place was committing suicide in stage 5... Was that necessary to manipulated the unseen enemies to fall into the pit as well? Nevertheless, YES vote!

Somewhat anti-climactic, but since I've never had the patience to sit through the published movie, this one held my attention pretty well. I liked the antics throughout, and it's pretty entertaining. Good job guys, yes vote.

I can explain that, basically the black whip lady has a lot of hp and goes onto the bottom of the screen but doesn't come out far enough in order to do anything to her. She then hovers at the bottom and works her way to the top and comes out then. Also the juggler doesn't come on until you defeat her so it was important to priortize her first over the other enemy. The most effective way was to fall into the pit on the frame the whip lady spawns so that she falls onto the screen and therefore enable me to throw her into the pit for a quick kill.

Mortal Kombat shows off various stuff and cool quirks and does not blantant and needslessly waste time This movie is nothing more than a pride movie playing for ego so 'no' vote. EDIT: The movie fails to be objective and often takes time out inexcusably like hitting the other player for no good, reason. I.e. hitting your ally for no good reason just for the sake of surprise. Its mentioned in the guidelines somewhere along the lines of don't surprise the player for no good reason like jumping into a pit.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

Beat'em ups are very underrated and disrespected on this site. The original Streets of Rage run was extremely good and entertaining. This one is simply amazing. Easy yes vote. Rage in under twenty minutes? Are you kidding me?

Loved this, awesome work! Efficient, smart, and funny, too! The fighting between the players was hilarious-- I loved how they seemed to keep getting a little bit wiser to the other's actions, and the fight would deepen. I got worried at Level 8, though, because even though I had read the submission text I still thought the game was desyncing strangely. And then tada! This was an amazing run, guys, very entertaining. I'm just curious how large the resulting tradeoffs were, but still you steamrolled this game.

Poor Axel always got rejected by Blaze :( Weird ending glitch was an kind of anti-climax, still voting yes.

Yeah, really. There are gentler ways to reject a guy than throwing him off a roof. :D I liked this run a lot. I liked Sprint's, too, and this is a huge improvement in all respects.

A couple of spots looked improvable, like on stage 2, where it is lagging from how many badguys are on the screen, and you defeat them all individually instead of calling in a special to kill them all at once. And it is a bit repetetive since the order of the day seems to be "throw axel or blaze into an enemy bunch over and over" but I definitely found myself laughing out loud at a couple of spots, so I'm going to have to vote yes.

Stage 8 looks improvable too, but maybe its just us. Nevertheless, this was an amazing run! Getting an easy Yes from me :) Congratulations Mukki and AKA.

I tested the police attack and it was 4 seconds slower, I was expecting the lag to be much worse throughout the game, but the only other area which really lagged was the start of level 5, but in both situations I was able to get a huge multikill. About stage 8, in Chemist's WIP he gets really lucky with the Garcia at the start of the level, we even hexed in what he did and it didn't work, but I know his WIP is improvable since our movements were much better at the start of the level, if only we can stop him from attacking Blaze. We tried many variations, but there was no other choice other than to toss him away. I think the screenshot should come from either levels 2,3 or 4 since they all have the best backgrounds. Here's my suggestion

I thought the original Streets of Rage movies were really boring/shouldn't have been published, and this seems to follow that trend quite nicely. Voting No.

Hard to get a lot of entertainment value out of a game with as few moves as this game has, but I think you guys did a pretty good job overall. I didn't find most of the Axel/Blaze fighting very amusing, but that knife throw into the police special was awesome. I have to wonder if using a police special in Round 7 would've spiced things up though (rather than just suiciding 30 times over), since the idea of firing through the building is absurd. :) Anyway, yes vote from me because I liked it.

That's one of the reasons it was used in level 5 (the main reason being that it was faster). If used it level 7 it would've looked terrible because it would be so unneccessary and long. The suicides are there to minimise the length of the final score screen after level 8. You are credited for the lives remaining and so suiciding your lives away in level 7 saves about 15 seconds.

This run turned out to be all of what I would want out of it. It had 'many aspects', some being subtle and others being in your face. It had some genuine entertainment trade-offs, which some were in the waiting periods (the best time to do 'em). And the matter of progressing through the game was top notch (all those bodies, the quirky/quick fighting was really neat to see). The only thing I didn't like was the ending. Glitches in runs are fine but when they remove key parts of a game, I feel that that just ruins everything. In this case, it didn't ruin the run but maybe you guys could consider throwing in an alternate ending run, just for shits and giggles. Regardless, this movie is better than the published one so here's another yes vote. Great work the both of yous.

I'm a fan of beat em ups, and this was a killer run :) Funny, smart ideas to speed it up (yeah: suicide) and surprising moments. I also wanted to see it to the end, but it is good enough for a big yes vote from me!

I really enjoyed this movie. The constant usage of the team attacks didn't bother me, as they're insanely powerful, stylish, mobile, and I don't have a chance to make use of them when playing 1-player. 1) I'm assuming that, unlike SOR3, neck-throwing your partner does little damage to enemies? (let your partner grab your back, kick forward, press attack as your feet touch down). I'm glad that you at least fit a few of these in for fun. 2) Does Blaze's flying attack do less damage than Axel's, or was it just convenient for her to do most of the partner-throwing (due to faster walking, I'll bet)?
