• Goes for fastest time
  • Hardest difficulty
  • No damage
  • L+R and U+D to save time
  • gens_9.5b
Revenge of Shinobi is the sequel to the SMS port of Shinobi, the prequel to Shinobi III, and related to Shadow Dancer. This is an improvement on the efforts of Neofix (13:40.83) and jhp (13:35.22).
Changes and notes:
  • More dangerous/daring style
  • No grinding against walls
  • (1-2) You could sneak under the bamboo traps, but I found a faster way.
  • (1-3) Hit the boss sooner [Dark Mana] [mikwuyma, via Dark Mana]
  • (2-2) More direct route
  • (3-1, 7-1, 7-2, 8-1) Killed offscreen enemies to prevent lag
  • (3-2) Picked up a 50-pack of shurikens while waiting for the elevator
  • (4-1) Non-damage boost off Stallone's shoulder to save a few frames [Qlex]
  • (5-3) 4x shuriken spread takes out the first target without stopping.
  • (6-1) No lightning shield necessary
  • (7-2) Scrolled some bullets off the screen vertically to save some waiting
  • (8-2) Faster route through the maze
  • (8-3) The speed and range of the boss retaliation depends partly on his HP or how many times he's been hit. I can't make them all fast. (Mike Uyama seems to have known this for his speedrun.)
Known differences between REV00 and other versions:
  • Most important, this is the only one with all the "original" character designs.
  • One less splash screen at startup
  • The logs in 2-1 have different timing.
This movie will not sync on other versions.
Damage:
Normal attack1
Powerup attack3
Kariu (flame)4
Mijin (explode)8
Getting bumped or taking damage makes you stop when you touch ground. Also, taking damage makes you lose powerup. That's why this is no damage.
Attack magic doesn't do damage where it would help (final boss) and would be a waste of time anywhere else.

Some screens:

Truncated: Nice improvements. Accepting.

I could never get through this game as a kid, so seeing it destroyed so ridiculously quickly is satisfying, even if I've never seen the previous submissions. Lots of things about this run wowed me, but the Fushin shortcuts in particular were awesome. Plus, I liked the zany motions done throughout the run, like gliding, rolling on floors, suddenly moonwalking near the end of 2-1, etc. I'm also glad you used the original release of the game; I had always been curious as to what the original Spider-Man battle looked like. Apparently, once you damage him enough, he doesn't just climb out and let Batman appear (as with the demon thing in the later releases,) he literally turns into Batman. Crazy! I give this slick effort a Yes vote.

Shinobi goes to Hollywood!! Rambo, Terminator, Spider-man, Batman, Godzilla, ninjas, kung fu fighters and armies. This game has it all. The run itself was nicely executed, and good improvement Yes vote

I laughed hard @ 2-1, about the moonwalking What's funny is that I had multiple ideas about improving the last TAS but you used these ideas before me. I don't see any possible improvements. Everything is just incredible, entertaining and fast. I have several moments I loved but I'm too lazy to explain these. Very Yes vote, keep it up.

A run of this awesome game is long overdue so it's great that you took the time to make one. The run itself looked good so I don't mind yesifying this submission.

Wow, great run, now I really need to improve my outdated speed run. Also, I feel embarrassed about missing the best route in 8-2 :( My only complaint is that I thought I was the one who suggested the better strategy against the first boss :-/ (Dark Mana was the one who gave advice for the bamboo). There were three things I didn't understand: 1. How do the triggers in 1-2 work? I didn't know you didn't need to step on the plates. 2. How does the infinite roll work? Is it a U+D, L+R thing? 3. How does the invisible platforms trick work? AGain, is it a U+D, L+R thing? This is a lot less important, but what did you collect near the end of 5-2? Seriously, you made this normally slow game look really fast.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! As for 1-2, the first gate is opened when you touch the floor stone, either from the top or the left. The second gate is opened when you cross an invisible barrier. When you hold L+R, your current animation (crouching, rolling, attacking, etc) is locked and you move to the right. If this is used to walk off a ledge, you can jump in midair. You can do it going left too: Hold U+D plus either L or R to choose the direction. Two tricks I didn't use: Press all 4 directions and you throw to the left while gliding to the right. And press L+R while getting bumped and the guy clutches his chest for a long, long time; it looks like he's having a heart attack. Near the end of 5-2 I get a partially hidden 50-shuriken. Couldn't figure out how to get that 1-up without slowing though. (I referred to a gamefaqs guide for all the hidden locations, but the guide identifies some of the items wrongly.) I'm glad that this makes you want to redo the speedrun: Your speedrun is what got the TAS ball rolling.

One of my favorite games. Thank you so much! Loved the sliding/rolling action, amazed at how badly you rocked those bosses (especially on stage 3 and the final boss). Isn't his hair supposed to hurt you when he swings it at you, whether you're ducking or not?
