About the run

This is an improvement to Krocketneo's previously published 100% kills Gradius 3 TAS, it is about 2 minutes and 53 seconds faster and has a higher percentage of kills.
I actually never got interested in the game until I saw the latest TAS of it, (I have only played it through once) I found it entertaining but I also found it quite unoptimized and I thought there where a lot of wasted potential for movement. So I decided to give it a try, hoping to save at least 10 seconds over the run which evidently I did.
Sadly though I would still not call this a true 100% kills movie, in level 4 a couple of fire rings get destroyed by the environment instead of me, and in level 5 there might have been 1 or 2 small rocks that slipped past me in the fire unnoticed. Also after the 4th boss there are stones falling from the ceiling which are destroyable, but it was impossible to take all of them so I decided to leave them all for a cleaner look. However I do kill all enemies in both level 4 and 7. (the vertically scrolling ones) It might look like I miss some but that is only a illusion, the stages are much smaller than one would think. (about 1.5-2 screens tall)
The improvements is about 90% lag reduction and 10% better boss fights. I generally kill more enemies faster with less shots which in some areas saves insane amounts of time, and by finding most of the bosses health addresses I was able to kill them quicker. Also a commonly used thing in my boss fights is to let some of the options be inside the boss temporarliy while starting to charge the beam, this will make their charge counter go down to zero and that allows me to fire multiple fully powered charged shots at slightly different frames to make the boss get hit by all of them (or at least enough) instead of being damaged by one and absorbing the rest during it's invincibility time. I think most of the boss fights are fully optimal, some might be improvable by a frame or two and one or two might be improvable by more if you find fully optimal placing for your options, this is unlikely though.
Also this game lags a lot... I removed maybe 40-45% of it but it is still VERY noticeable through out the run. In total there is a little more than 3 minutes of lag left, so there is your theoretical improvement :) (completely impossible though)
EDIT: Due to the controversial ending I made a second version that physically kills the final boss. The movie file is 1223 frames longer but the boss dies much sooner.

Frame savings per level and lag per level left.

Menu:

Level 1:

Level 2:

Thanks to

People who have worked on this game earlier (I think Krocketneo, Warp and tviks) Also much thanks to nitsujrehtona who made a excellent lua script for the game which helped me greatly in the last two levels.

WOW, man that is what a Gradius movie should look like! Frantic movements, tons of kills, toying with death, this run entertained me so much more than the previous one it's unbelievable. The amount of kills is just astounding, the patterns you make sometimes border on beautiful (ie the starbursts), and the way you handled the pillars of easter island heads had me scratching my head at times. Many times it looked like enemies just exploded without you even touching them. Not to mention the absolute HUGE amount of lag you got rid of. Easy yes vote, and an easy 9/9 when it gets published. Great job!

Much better than any previous version. This game is now on par with adelikat's Gradius in making art. Yes vote.

I am not sure why, but the movie stopped playing right before getting to the final boss. As for the run itself, pure excellence. Like mmbossman, I too give this a 9/9.

Impressive run. However, the part of final boss is too... cunning. I would rather you beat the boss. I like a shorter movie more, but not a shorter movie file.

Awesome movie! The margin of improvement over the previous one is just ridiculous. It's a bummer that the ceiling rocks can't be killed in time. (The game developers even made them immune to the blue insta-kill capsules.): Some trivia: Some enemies survived by spawning off-screen: one rock in the volcano level and five bubbles in the final level. Exactly one meteorite sneaked past you in level 5. On the other hand, over 3300 enemies weren't so lucky. No wonder the final boss just committed suicide when you showed up. :-P

When I was watching and noticed that the movie had stopped, I figured it was a desync, but I let it run anyway, just in case. It was a huge wtf when the final boss just dies for no reason. I would like the movie either way, but to go through an entire movie killing everything in a murderous rampage, and then having the most passive ending imaginable is just funny to me. Others probably see it as inconsistent, but I thought it was great.

Does anyone (Cpadolf maybe?) have any idea what glitch causes the end boss to die all by itself?

Yeah I end input early, I just find a position that will render me imortal and the boss commits suicide about a minute after the movie ends. I suspected that some people would not like that and I intended to release a second movie file where I actually kill the boss. Yesterday though I did not have time for it, but I'll do it later today. Also thanks everyone for the very kind words :)

I dunno if it is a glitch even, according to someone (?) most bosses in gradius self destruct sooner or later, I figured the final boss would too and searched for an invulnerable spot. I have no idea technically why it kills itself, maybe it's sad :(

Last boss dying by himself is not a glitch, it's a staple of Gradius games. Most (if not all) of them have passive and/or self-destructing final bosses.

Ah, we have again this controversial situation, the same we had with the river city ransom movie (IIRC) which also ended early and caused the final boss to kill itself after a rather long period of time. When the movie should be ended is subject to debate, as pointed out at http://tasvideos.org/Rules.html#3TheExactTerminationPointIsSubjectToDebate Personally I like #5, which is also Bisqwit's favorite: Ending the movie at the moment when no further input can cause the game to end faster. This doesn't always make the movie as short as possible, but IMO it conforms more to the "the movie must be complete" rule. Of course all this is heavily a matter of opinion.

Yeah as I said I'll upload a second input file later today. The people/judges will get to decide which one to publish, personally though I like this one better. Not because it ends the movie as fast as possible but because it is a big WTF for most people.

Very nice run. The improvement speaks for itself. Voted yes. Also, knowing you handled lag very well in this game, would you consider tasing Super R-Type for SNES? That one lags a lot and I would love to see how you would handle the lag + its a very entertaining game.

I might consider giving it a try, I've never played it though so I should probably do that first.

Educated opinion: R-Type is only worth watching in a TAS if done Force-only.

I'm a bit puzzled about the situations where it clearly lagged, although there were zero enemies on-screen. anyway, as expected, yes vote.

At a couple of points I only moved every other frame, this makes it look like the game lags. Also updated the submission text with a link to the second version of the run.

Nice. You beaten my Gradius 3 Run, with some nice imporvement, and using the improved emulator. Mine is almost 100% kills, and yours is not 100% kills, my Gradius 3 run will obsolete. Did you find the safe spot for the final boss, before ending the movie? Or, is it better to defeat the final boss, before you end the movie? Voting Yes.

The site's timing is based off frames. Being hypocritical over exploitation such as the final boss here is nonsensical. In-game time for things like Metroid are a different story, but for games like this one, the precedent should reign supreme. Especially in runs that don't sacrifice frames for entertainment (like this one) That's just a really long way of saying those who are complaining about the final boss need to shut up about it. And hey, while we're at it, why not switch weapons too? It's boring watching people rape face in five seconds flat with the E-Laser. And it causes lag too so why not find a way to prevent that? And S-Options allow for much more entertainment than normal ones and you might even be able to exploit them. And while we're at it, fuck Speedups too. Even on the level where you need them! It's boring when they're quickly moving around and dodging things with ease, let's see more close calls with slow movement, it'd be like watching a sloth dodging machine gun fire!
