This run is pretty basic, it just completes Flash Columns mode real fast.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Gens 9.5b
  • Aims for the fastest time to clear the flashing piece.
  • Plays at hardest level (level 9)
  • Plays at easiest difficulty (Novice)
Columns is a Tetris based game, that, instead of having pieces forming several shapes, the player controls 3 jewels above each other, and to make the jewels on the filed disappear, 3 or more of the same color must be lined up horizontally, vertically or diagonally. In Flash Columns, the player must delete the flashing piece.

Comments

Maybe, this mode could have been faster, if only there was better luck manipulation. But apparently, there's no way to do so. I also may have failed doing the best drop at the first piece.

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. I'm not sure I got the right ROM though. (I tried Lemmings (JU) (REV00) [!].gen, which was the closest match to what you wrote.) Well, here goes! Feel free to clean up the list.

Bisqwit: Oh dear. NVA was totally off the track. Undoing...

adelikat: Apparently improvable in realtime. And this isn't suprising, the movie was generally lacking in impossible combos or other suprising things. Also, I think a score based run might be more appropriate for this game. Rejecting.

Aside from the game choice* and technical inaccuracies, you should have favoured the hardest difficulty. Other than that, it was fun seeing this game played again. Congratulations to your first submission. *I don’t categorically dislike tases of that game type. I'd rather prefer some kind of max point runs with a ton of planning and luck manipulation. edit: crap, I voted wrong, sorry.

I've always wanted to see what could be done with Columns, but never got very far myself. There's definitely a lot of options to make an entertaining movie. This game lends itself to making crazy combos potentially, which you had to some extent in your movie, but which go contrary to your goals. The choice of difficulty seems questionable as emu mentioned. I liked your movie enough to try my hand at these goals myself... and made it 10 seconds faster on the in-game clock :) And I'm positive mine could be optimized quite a bit as it is still under 100 rerecords. So good start, and I hope to see a Columns movie on this site someday...

I wonder how well a Time-Attack run would work? That would most definitely be based on long combos with an exciting finish, due to how the scoring works: L = level + 1 C = chain count (1, 2, 3, 4... for each point in chain) G = gems cleared S = 30 * (C - 2) * L * G I'm not sure if it's 30 - (C-2) or 10 * C. But the end result is that a long chain of nothing but 3 gems, then a final link in that chain of a huge number of gems will score big points.

People: This is just my very first submission, I'm just warming up. So this isn't suppose to be epic. But nonetheless, I can't say that this video is bad. @emu: I absolutely forgot to do the hardest difficulty. @alden: Nice run. It's almost all a question of luck. According to what I've seen, Luck Manipulation is near impossible in Columns.

Not really. Part of making a TAS is eliminating luck through rerecords. Which is what I did.

Oh, I guess I should say; I've beaten the submission's time unissisted more times than I care to count. I may have bested Alden's as well... I've come damn close if I haven't, though. If you notice, they're always set up in a pattern (moreso on Novice) -- you can usually trigger a huge chain reaction if you play your moves right, which is usually a lot faster than drilling though the middle of the stack (for me). (That and it'd look cooler)

Dear God. I can never say to many times that I'm sorry (wait... I never said it, I think :S) for making this awful excuse for a TAS. I won't ever do something like that again. Several times, I'm haunted with the memories of the wasting time (and space) by submitting it...

I wouldn't let what Xkeeper says get you too down. He can be a bit overzealous sometimes.

No, it's not that. The only thing that you guys on the forum did was open my eyes. Ok, waking me up. I was probably sleeping when I made that.

You should post some WIP in a thread in the Genesis section. It would be better to evaluate your work and to have feedback on what you could improve. That's the best way to go ;) Good luck with the improvements.
