Main Information

  • FCEU 0.98.25 (It is no problem in other FCEU)
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Manipulates luck
  • Genre: Platform
  • Takes no damage

Improvement

It is 108 seconds faster than my last run. The key to improvement is the using of tools which can be got after hitting enemy. There are many tools in this game, but most of them will not help us at all. So I only use two of them.
The first tool is the one which can help us walk faster. Its function is to add speed (only X-position). The normal speed is 2.5 pix. We can walk 3.5 pix with this tool. We will not get this tool in stage 5. This tool is no use in stage 3, because we don't need X-speed in stage 3. So I don't manipulate this tool in stages 3&5.
The second tool is the one which can help us hit more HP. Its function is add power (only add the power of the dart). The normal power is 1HP/hit. We can do 2HP/hit with this tool. But it is hard to get this tool. We can only get it in special room (it is not random but regular), and before it, we must get a key. The next problem is that we will level up by getting two of this tool except the first level up (we can level up by only one tool in the first level up). So I only level up once.

How to manipulate luck

There is nothing more to manipulates luck except tools. The memory address 0262 decides which tool we will get. There is only one thing we should take attention to. It is the memory address 0291. This memory address records how many enemies we have killed. We can get a tool only when the value of the memory address 0291 is even. If the value of the memory address 0291 is odd, how ever we manipulate luck, we will not get any tool.

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. Oh! I also corrected the ROM name.
  • You indicated Demon Sword (U).nes
  • I updated it to Demon Sword (U) [o1].nes

Bisqwit: Propagating NVA's screenshot edits to forums, and doing some spelling fixes and complimentary proofreading.

Truncated: This seems to desynch on my good [!] ROM. Only the [o1] ROM works. This means that the run cannot be accepted as it is. adelikat has said that he will take a look at the hexability of this, because we would hate to reject a good run.
Looking back, Yunshui's movie was also recorded with [o1], but it synched with [!] anyway.

mmbossman: It appears that xipo's previous submission also used the [o1] dump. As this submission does not break continuity with the prior publications, and attempts to hex it to work with the correct version have failed, I am setting it back to accepted.
However, future attempts will be rejected if they continue to use the overdump. The proper ROM name is "Demon Sword (U) [!].nes", with a checksum of [7e43da13522acdd0d1f170ebdcb24687]

Oh yeah, definite improvement and a bit of nostalgia too. Excellent fight against the final boss. =)

That's odd Truncated, it synced fine with my good rom... Edit: Actually, my checksum matches the one used by xipo. I guess it could be mislabeled from an old goodset...

Same here, checksum matched, ran fine, wasn't tagged as overdump.

The Demon Sword version I have is labeled U.nes (DG), and the checksum matched, and the run synched fine with FCEU 98.28. Loved your run. This is the first Demon Sword TAS I watched. The game is very suitable for tasing since the player can run through the levels with great speed and no visible time reduction at all for killing enemies (except the enemies who drop the power ups you need initially in the levels). Yay! Some of the boss fights are dry, but there's not much you can do about that. The exception here is the last boss fight which was a treat. Great job!

I can confirm that this run desyncs with the (U) ROM (Source: GoodNES 3.10). The character approaches the second boss, then automatically dies... hopefully it can be hexed to work for the rest of the movie. But if not, I wouldn't be adverse to publishing it due to the prior run using a bad ROM. Just make a note that any attempt to obsolete this one should use the (U) ROM, not the (o1) version.

My U ROM works in 98.15. Great improvement, almost seems obvious now in retrospect.

The [o1] rom is not an overdump of the good ROM. It is in fact an overdump of the [b1] ROM. You can use some tools to trim the [o1] ROM into the [b1] ROM.
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do

No good. Even if you redo the boss and finish at the same frame, the level takes 6 more frames to fade out on the good rom. It throws off the rest of the movie. Audit your roms.

I didn't have luck with keeping it in sync either. I was going to covert to .fm2 where I could more easily edit and try to add frames to compensate for the extra fadeouts and see if that worked.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

This movie addressed my main complaint with the previous movie by getting the speedups. Getting the shuriken power-up definitely helped. The final boss fight was great. However, there is still 1 more thing I would like to see, that should make it faster. The final boss fight was about 18 s long. Each shot from the scroll does 16 damage. Aimed properly, you should be able to hit twice with each wave. The boss of the game has 128 HP, I think. So, if you hit him with all 3 shots twice, he'd be down to only 32 HP. So, it should take roughly 5 s to kill him if you use both the scroll and shurikens. So, I think that you can get a scroll faster than that, though manipulating the doors is difficult, if I recall correctly. I've had the final area give me scrolls without the miniboss fight before. So, has anyone investigated if use the scroll secondary weapon would be faster on the boss of the game?
