Rolan's Curse is like NES Legend of Zelda reduced to a linear and slow-paced action adventure. I originally intended to just play the game through normally, but recorded this TAS movie for your viewing pleasure instead. It was fun.

Movie attributes

  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Abuses a programming error in the game
  • Manipulates luck
  • Imaginary movie genre: Adventure / Comedy / Fantasy / Short
  • Game genre: Action / Adventure
  • Body count: 14

Comments

I get two "armor" item drops from the enemies to boost maximum HP temporarily. "Healing" drops are also manipulated many times. All the item drops are fairly common and easily manipulated, but the health management needs to be planned carefully anyway.
The pick axe (which can be used to destroy certain obstacles) is not a necessary item, but it saves time in the room before the boss.

Boss Fight

The boss has 255 hit points (RAM address: C23E).
The player's standard attack power is worth 2 points of damage.
Luckily, there is a power-up just outside the boss room, which increases attack power to 4.
Some time is wasted to save health for the boss room. This allows the player to suicide inside the boss instead of waiting for his fixed movement pattern.

Death Glitch

The rest of the game is skipped by dying simultaneously with the first boss: The player respawns in the previous room while the boss dies. The level end is then triggered, but due to the focus being in a wrong room, the "final boss is dead" state is summoned instead of the "level 1 boss is dead". I don't know exactly why the game works like that.

Possible improvements

  • Better luck manipulation is almost certainly possible.
  • Some clever health management could be possible.
  • Faster boss fight might be achieved somehow...
  • I didn't monitor lag

About Rolan's Curse II

The sequel is much longer and has multiple characters to play with. The death glitch does not work. Most of the levels are optional sidequests, though, so the fast completion would involve only 3 necessary boss fights. The final boss has more than 49 000 hit points.
Zold (who has about 140 points of attack power) should be taken to the party to fight the last two boss fights. Jude should be taken for the first boss fight before Zold is available. Also, a person named Pit should be taken to the party near the beginning, because his bombs can destroy obstacles and it saves time near the end of the game. Health potions should be manipulated from enemies as much as possible during the whole trip to make the final boss fight faster.
That would be a simple plan to start with Rolan's Curse 2. I'm not going to do the game myself, but I made a test run that shows the route.
adelikat: Replaced the submission file with a version by the author that is 321 frames faster.

mmbossman: And the laughter of the people could be heard throughout the land. Accepting for publication.

hahaha, I love those kinds of glitches. Nice! Pretty slow-paced, but relatively action-packed as you make your way to your first-and-final boss. The battle was pretty entertaining, too--bambambambambambambambam slight evade. ok bambambambambambambambamdead. Victoly! Also, I loved how, around the 9700~ mark, you enter some town, and on the bottom-left side of the screen is just some pac-man headed villager just....spazzing out.

That picture can't be hotlinked, btw. You should edit the submission text to provide the original web page instead.

I'm always interested in glitch-skipped games. This movie reminded me of the Contra III glitched movies, as they all abused deaths to skip things. It was slow-paced though. 7/Abstained.
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do

i am curious as to why the first one was done instead of the second i never played either but i naturally assume the second would be a better game or was this just to show off a glitchfest?

Well, I didn't originally plan to make either one, but after I found the glitch, I decided to record the movie for everybody to see. The sequel would require much more work and I have no motivation for bigger projects. It is indeed a better game in all aspects.

Whoa! One of the enemies has a chance of dropping the pick axe, so I don't need to get it from the chest! I think this saves a few hundred frames. The new version will not be significantly different, so I won't cancel this submission. Maybe the game gets rejected anyway, so it's good to keep it just one submission. Uh, my submitting finger has always been a bit too sensitive. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Just a bump to try to rustle up some interest... only 3 votes in over a month (which is sadly pretty typical for GB games).

Thanks for bringing this one to my attention, bossy. Pretty cool! I was settled in for a long walk-fest then it just... ended. Hahaha! Not a bad addition to the TASvideos arsenal.

I didn't read about this movie beforehand, so was kind of confused when it ended so early after such a weak-looking boss. I guess pretty much what one should expect from Mr. Aqfaq. Short and sweet ;)
I make a comic with no image files and you should read it. While there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free. -Eugene Debs

I voted 8/abstained. This is what Zelda-runs should be. No more than 5 minutes. Also lol at the final boss

I liked this movie. And some of the music. (And I'd guess it'd be something simple like bosshp-> triggering death-animation triggers "next level sub", which cases what level you're in by room, and the else/default case is if you're not in any of the non-final bossrooms, therefore you're at final boss.)
