I don't agree, I didn't think the TMNT TAS was all that impressive. You want an impressive Arcade TAS? D&D: Shadow Over Mystara. Not even close. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4925d3WKhuY

That isnt submitted here. The author said he would improve that years ago. I never heard from him ever since.

My point wasn't that that run needs a star - obviously it'd have to be submitted first. My point was that it's an example of an impressive arcade beat 'em up TAS.

I can actually see where you are going with this. Perhaps we should wait untill a faster paced and more action paced beat' em up TAS like this comes before we consider giving stars to arcade games.

Assuming the runner is done with that movie, why isnt it submitted here? Is it because the author used MAME?

I don't have a problem with giving a star to an arcade TAS so long as it's a movie that newcomers would want to watch. If we get an even better arcade TAS later, we can always move the star.

That TAS may be impressive but, since it is not on the site, I think that DarkKobold's deserves a star.

Since there doesnt seem to be any other beat em ups that are published, I reopen my nomination for a star to TMNT.

TMNT "4 players" starred. The Arcades didn't have a star yet and shows off playing with 4 players perfectly. There is no reason for not starring something because something else might come along some day.

I think that the recent Simpsons publication should take the Arcade TMNT star. My reasoning was stated here.

I think there was too much urgency to give TMNT/Simpsons a star. I think the reasons for doing so are identical to the argument that of "using 2 players at once is hard to do™" 5 years ago. The skills required for controlling 2 players would still be applicable even if 16 players were being used at once. There are other 4p arcade games e.g. Kingdom Hearts, which are much more complex and entertaining to watch.

If and when we get a better arcade run, it can take the star. This star is simply currently allocated to our best arcade run, and we only have two to choose from.

Nonono, we should totally not give stars in cases where a better tas could maybe one day be made. On that note, revoke all stars. You never know when something better will be made so better safe than sorry!

Mitjitsu, I think you are underestimating the difficulty increase that happens with every player added to the equation. But regardless of that, it isn't really about that. Its about the fact that 4 players at once is more inhuman. Think of TAS value as how impressive it would be if some Chuck Norris meats the Terminator played a video game. Or even more simply, just look at it as more "wow" than 3 players, or 2 players, or 1 player. I think a 4-player movie is exactly the kind of wow factor that is immediately accessible to the a general audience.

Entertainment wise, however, I vote for TMNT. The simpsons had too much "Play nice" going on; it really killed the tas for me personally. I seem to remember a few cool parts of TMNT, like slashing at the shredder or something. Yes, TMNT could have been more entertaining, but I still think it outweighs the simpsons. The other question is, do either of them deserve a star? Why rush in to star a publication just so we have a starred arcade game. Why not wait for a few more games before deciding that The simpsons (for instance) does indeed deserve a star.

Hm, I think a great part of the "general audience" doesn't like to read movie descriptions and thus they'd think it was played by 4 different people, provided they don't really understand the concept of what a TAS is yet. So that would maybe make them not so impressive to first time viewers. Edit: Huh? What am I reading? Did I seriously write that? o_o

There's really only one thing outsiders like to see, and that's the games they know. That's why Morimoto's SMB3 and MM2 videos became so crazy popular everywhere.

I think that the idea is: "Want to see a TAS of an arcade game? Check this one." It's not so much about the quality compared to the best TASes. It's about presenting a variety of TASes for different platforms. Remember, once again, that the star is not a measurement of quality. It's a suggestion for newcomers.

However, we do want to suggest top quality runs to newcomers. However, I do agree with your point. As far as _should_ we have an aracade star, I think the answer is an obvious yes. Either TMNT or Simpsons is a quality movie to show off. Its good enough for a star, even if there is some future run that shows it off better. When that day comes maybe it gets the Simpson's or TMNT's star.

I nominate [1616] N64 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time by Bloobiebla in 56:54.20. Entertaining optimized TAS of a widely known game.

I really liked that run but I don't think it's a theyu-PAR movie for first time users. Even though I've played through and beaten OoT in the normal fashion, the TAS was way too messed up for me to even have any clue what was going on. Simpler games with simpler glitches, or a run that intentionally neglects some of the glitches in favor of completeness (like the 100% run) might be more accessible to new users.

That doesn't seem to be a problem having into account that stars were granted to TASes like this or this.

The role of special stars was not always well-understood to be "ideal movies for new users of the site to enjoy, to get them into the TAS genre." Anyway, the mistakes of the past, yadda yadda, etcetera, etcetera.

In the SM64 run, the glitching is obvious: speed is accumulated to the point where it allows going through solid obstacles. I, for the record, was against giving CT a star for the same reason Pointless Boy stated. Besides, SM64, OoT, and CT are all immensely popular enough games that don't really need special invitation, and starring their any%, which is also the most popular category, is largely a fan service.

There's nothing wrong in having a few overly glitched examples for the newcomers. Let's just keep their amount moderate.
