I would nominate our (feos and me) TAS [1920] NES Battletoads "warps, 2 players" by feos & MESHUGGAH in 11:04.72 Reasons: - NES TAS of 2011 - famous game - 2 players - radical gameplay change according to earlier TAS of this game - visually funny overall (both the entertainments and the technical part) - good audience response (8.6 from 14.5 votes)

- WTF factor nominating this to star wasn't my idea if anyone is curious

A few months have passed and I've noticed again that Cave Story doesn't have a star yet. Please add one! It's among the best candidates on the site for a star. I agree with Warp's points above, despite my snarky response to the other part of his post (sorry, Warp!).

I believe that [1985] N64 Chameleon Twist 2 by Nahoc in 21:57.27 should get a star. Some things that set it apart: *It's a 3D game, so it would add a bit more variety against most of the 2D movies. *It's not an incredibly well known game unlike most of the games in the starred section. *It is blazingly fast paced for a 3D run. I am SURE that there are better reasons, but I still think that it is good enough for a star.

I personally think Sorcerer's Maze should take Arkanoid's star. Why? - The game is more visually appealing, and has music. - The amount of powerups is much greater (giant ball, multiple balls, row clearings, etc) - The game features much greater planning needed to be as fast as possible. - It has a higher average rating then the Arkanoid TAS (but it also only has 3 votes) Feel free to list more reasons. I also doubt I'm the only one who liked it more then the Arkanoid TAS, no offense to Baxter.

I just thought I'd say that I think the warpless SMB TAS deserves a star: [1962] NES Super Mario Bros. "warpless" by HappyLee in 18:38.23 ^It's displayed incorrectly in the link, but goes to the right location. I'm not sure why it is doing that. The run is probably a perfect run, it's quite entertaining, and it's Super Mario Bros. Feel free to not add it, because I am biased. However, I realized it probably SHOULD get a special star or maybe a notable publication. While I know SMB has been over-seen with so many publications. I still think the average viewer would be interested in that run. Just figured I'd give my input. EDIT: I also agree with adding a star for the BattleToads TAS: [1920] NES Battletoads "warps, 2 players" by feos & MESHUGGAH in 11:04.72

Though I think only the FDS version contains this inetense TAS action of all SMB runs, I think the warpless walkathon does the most impossible. It even has those screen zips and walking through the stones or behind the trees.

What happens in the Stars tier scares me. Direct contradiction to the guidelines, some games were starred several times, some branches of similar games bring both games stars, 3 NES megamen got starred... gosh...

I agree. Is there a glitch in the system from the new tiers? Did adelikat add them manually?

Nach was starring most I guess, but the lack of total Star maintenance log makes it impossible to find out.

eh? It seems like for the initial import they used the ratings system actually. And they're going back and manually fixing the rest?

[1665] GBA Sonic Advance by Mukki in 10:46.52 [1958] GBA Sonic Advance 2 by Mukki in 18:01.78 Would people object starring both Sonic Advance 1 and 2? I felt the runs are too similar for that, but each one showcases slightly different features (not speaking of unique tas methods). I found sa1 scorecount really annoying, but it's run features constant wall-zipping with a funny animation. sa2 looks like a better game with cool moveset and without scorecounts, but it just runs through relatively near the intended way. I'd wish to move the sa2 star to sa1, but people seemed to disagree with such option. List the advantages of sa2 as a TAS (like, showcases unique tasing methods and skills different from sa1) if you want both starred, or highlight why one is better than another. Replies like "both need stars because 3 megamen and 3 smbs have stars" would be ignored.

I am familiar with both runs and SA2 is unquestionably superior. It is similar to the intended play in only the most superficial way and a comparable human time is even more unlikely than in SA1, in my opinion. The fact that it accomplishes this only through optimisation and understanding of the physics engine, and not through glitches, is noteworthy. SA2 is a great example of the skills and method required to create an optimal tool-assisted speedrun. SA1 is a gimmick.

The Recommended list is about to be untied off the Stars list, to allow stars tier be actually a tier for all best runs (now it's selective). Staff discussion dwelled on a list of 10 (probably 15) movies of widely famous games that blow up the newcomer's brain, namely by playing the game the most impossible way. Please post your suggestions in this thread! Thread #13457: The run that blew your mind

I had to heavily revise the stars list, adelikat wanted it to match the quota perfectly. Runs from the bottom of entertainment ratings were destarred. Some from the middle were as well, since we had several "too similar" TASes, and some wre outdated and not that impressive for today. All that is not absolute, I believed all of those were still awesome by what they contain, but relatively to the others something had to be destarred. Feel free to suggest other changes, including/excluding something different. Here's the changelog: http://tasvideos.org/TierMaintenanceLog.html

I'd say Yoshi's Island 100% pretty well covers anything YI any% does. So I'd say YI any% could drop its star. For the SMW1-derived runs, it's a bit of a trickier choice, since both SMW runs are considered quite excellent while SDW is probably one of the better known hack runs on the site. I don't think either of the SMW1 runs should lose their stars. As for the SMW1 hacks, I'm not sure about either of them. Do they offer a significant amount of exposure over the current SMW publications?

I suggest [2427] DS Super Scribblenauts "playaround" by Chef Stef, Kiwisauce in 1:01:52.63 and [2430] PSX Warcraft II: The Dark Saga "Orc Campaign" by Flip in 1:32:51.75 for potential Stars. Scribblenauts is widely considered very entertaining, similar to the currently starred Brain Age and Family Feud TASes. I think it deserves a spot alongside those two on the Star movie list. Warcraft II is a very unique run, because RTS TASes are quite uncommon. The run demonstrates what a TAS of an RTS looks like quite well. It's also a quite well known game; one of the most popular RTS games/series.

To do it I'd need to destar 2 movies with the lowest entertainment rating http://tasvideos.org/Movies-Stars-RatingE.html or something that already has 2 similar runs starred. Feel free to suggest destar candidates. Also, not enough rating for WC2 to maky any decision.

It won 1995 game of the year. I think it was PC Gamer, but it might've been one of the other computer magazines.

I would like to suggest either Streets Of Rage 2 or Streets Of Rage 3 for Star tier. This is one of the most famous series of beat-em-ups, both runs control two players at the same time at a frankly ridiculous difficulty level, and have very good audience response.

Suggestion taken. SoR2 now has more votes, but the ones from SoR3 are higher. Any thoughts which one deserves it more?

I think this is because the fandom generally considers SOR2 the superior game, whereas the run for SOR3 is the superior TAS. Looking over both videos, I believe the SOR3 run is most appealing because:
  • The third game has more varied content, ranging from super moves that can be used every few seconds (e.g. Zan's electrocution and Blaze's fireball), weapon-based super attacks (e.g. Blaze's sword blitz and Zan's bowling ball) and varied environmental hazards that kill enemies (e.g. the subway carts, falling barrels, and laser beams). As a result, it's more fast-paced overall.
  • The SOR3 run relies more on both characters acting in concert, whereas the SOR2 run often has one character (known game-breaker Max) do most of the work while the other character assists.
  • Hard mode on SOR3 (at least, on the American version, which is used here) is even more ridiculously hard than on SOR2.
  • The characters in the SOR3 run have full health bars all the time, indicating the superhuman skill here. Not the primary goal of the run but still impressive.
So I believe that of these two, SOR3 would be the best addition to Star Tier.

SoR2 is my favorite run and game, but SoR3 is more impressive on the technical side for me. SoR2's TAS took damage to save time, but SoR3's TAS took damage, because it could and still have 100%+ heath at all times. SoR3, deserves the Star. SoR2, while quite a fun run, does not deserve the Star due to the "Takes Damage to Save Time" issue I mentioned above.

I would prefer SoR2 for very impressive boss fights and also for a little easter egg in that run that only a few people noticed. Also it’s still my favorite TAS I’ve ever seen.
