Finally the variety! Best TR TAS IMO.

[4373] Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl "The Subspace Emissary, 1 player" by DyllonStej in 1:10:05.60 A masterclass in damage boosting, luck manipulation, and entertainment value. Feel free to replace Melee's "Adventure mode" Star with this one as I feel it supercedes that movie in every way: Better adventure mode, even more creative usages of unintended movement options, insane character variety, and not only is it longer, but it keeps your attention the whole time.

Strongly agreed, the Brawl Subspace TAS deserves a star. The Smash series currently has two starred movies: [3493] N64 Super Smash Bros. "Break the Targets & Board the Platforms" by Isotarge & Mittenz in 08:05.92 and [2505] GC Super Smash Bros. Melee "Adventure Mode" by numerics in 10:23.48. I think a third star is a bit much, and even though Melee is my favorite game in the series (in terms of tech/speed), I think Brawl Subspace can take the Melee Adventure star because, as said, it's a way better adventure mode with way more variety.

Also heavily recommending the star for Subspace.

[4314] GC Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door by Malleoz in 1:47:09.03 I feel like this game's long overdue for a Star. Several of the previous TASes have won awards, this one just won TAS of the Year over some stiff competition, and it's a great showcase of just how much a game can be broken more and more over time, being less than half of the original run's 5 hour length. They're all consistently highly rated as well, meaning the audience has always found them to be high quality and definitely entertaining, even from the very beginning.

I agree with this, there's always a huge amount of hype surrounding this game any time a new TAS is revealed, it's pretty clear that many people love these TASes.

They're very different games, Paper Mario is one of the spinoff RPG series, but still maintains some platforming. EDIT: I think it'd be good to have at least one Mario RPG star since they're extremely popular and TTYD is a very broken game making it a good pick.

I admit I don't quite get what's happening in TTYD even with commentary, and even though I liked the video about history of TTYD speedrunning. I don't understand RPGs. But we have a few of them starred, so this one looks like a worthy addition judging by how people feel about this movie, and yes it is super glitched. And completely different from Sunshine, which is a game with a unique mechanic and intense 3D platforming that's built around it.

I recommend for Stars [4253] PSX Crash Team Racing by AleMastroianni in 45:04.34 It got PSX TAS of 2020 award, and is one of the most popular PSX games, if not the most popular of all.

While it has some brilliant tracks, overall it's not as crazy as [3205] N64 F-Zero X "Jack Cup, Time Trial" by jagg2zero in 07:09.37 or [3243] N64 Mario Kart 64 by Weatherton in 20:33.32. Most tracks look like they're played normally, just with heavy drifting (I don't know the game). And it's twice as long as MK64.

[4450] N64 Super Smash Bros. "playaround" by Noxxa in 07:55.10 This movie has brought a ton of what was missing from Smash 64 publications, fast paced action and chaos that is more up to date with today’s standards. The author not only made every attack on each character unique and hilarious but also went out of his way to make hilarious freeze frames at the end of each battle, which is used as a publication screenshot. Unfortunately I’m not sure what this means for the current starred TAS of the game, I like both movies for different reasons. But I’m ok with the star being given to the playaround TAS if it has to be taken from BtP and BtT.

I don't know the game at all but I watched them side by side level by level, to compare the feel of gameplay. And gameplay in those 2 movies is completely different. It's 2 unrelated games that share the characters in terms of appearance, that all. We've been giving a bunch of stars to games from the same franchise on the same platform if gameplay is drastically different. It kinda makes more popular games look like they're the only thing an average viewer should care about. But it's not like we've ever had to not give a star to an obscure game because of that. There should be general variety in the star list itself, but again, these 2 movies are different. I don't think we have a single game with 2 starred movies yet. But does anyone know good arguments against such a situation? I personally prefer the playaround, the current star has seen its fame since 2017 already. But that doesn't sound like a good reason in isolation to remove the star. EDIT: I checked.
  • Sonic 3
  • SM64
  • SMB3
  • SMW
  • Super Metroid
  • and arguably Link's Awakening/DX
all have 2 stars. That's quite a precedent imo.

I will say I slightly prefer BTP/BTT just for the character variety, but I also don't think that only one of the two should be starred, since both of them very much deserve it. In general, we don't really need to vet Stars as hard as we do. If we're consistently getting amazing and highly entertaining runs then why should we deny giving some of them Stars when the only thing they "do wrong" is happen to be for a game that already has one?

Suggesting [4505] GC Super Smash Bros. Melee "Target Test" by PracticalTAS, Mario 64 Master, ajp_anton & tauKhan in 06:55.73 to take the star from [3493] N64 Super Smash Bros. "Break the Targets & Board the Platforms" by Isotarge & Mittenz in 08:05.92. Some reasons why I think this is a good idea: - N64 Super Smash Bros. already has 2 stars out of 3 publications, Melee currently has 0 out of 4 - Melee is a significantly more popular game - More than twice as many characters (for greater variety) - Faster gameplay with more movement tricks - Elements of luck manipulation and glitch setups that aren't in the N64 game. Melee's TAS shenanigans include things like spamming random character select, and even briefly going to a different game mode to set up a glitch. This makes it more than just a compilation of ILs - some significant hurdles had to be passed just to make this movie technically possible to put together. I think it's clearly worthy of having a Star.

I would like to nominate an older movie for stars: [1211] N64 Mischief Makers by Comicalflop in 55:04.28 The game itself has some really fun movement mechanics to it that is very fun to watch, the pace is super fast and satisfying to watch, the author makes some good attempts at playaround during downtime. Despite some of the slowdowns that are due to emulation, it’s a really fun TAS to watch.

Looks quick and varied, tho also kinda long. Need more opinions.

Part of the length is due to the cutscenes, but also from the festival level being a laggy mess.

I want to nominate [5169] N64 Star Fox 64 "Expert, maximum score" by WarHippy in 50:50.42 We don't have a lot of highscore TASes, especially of the 3D rail shooter variety. This TAS really shows off everything that makes the game great, we get to see each type of stage and vehicle, plus all the creative ways to break the scoring system.
Current project: Gex 3 any% Paused: Gex 64 any% There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.

I don't understand Doom enough to be able to tell the difference, but I don't think you have to ask anymore (and we didn't import the Starman role anyway).
