I've been working on a run of bonks revenge for the last few days after my phantasy star II run died. I finished round 1 with 50 smilies and decided it wasn't worth it. so I went back and optimized some stuff and avoided the smilies, I finished 2-1 so far. anyway I don't know a good place to upload .mcm files so I'll just upload it to rapid share for now. http://rapidshare.com/files/223445070/bonks_revenge_TAS.rar.html the rar contains both versions (bonksrevenge.mcm for no smilies copybonksrevenge.mcm for 50 smilies.)

The first level looked nice and I'd like to see more. However I think you could speed things up by using the strategy in this video when applicable: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SENABAEx-DM

Nice strat, and I think this game would be a great TAS choice.

nah you can't, you don't bounce off flowers like that in bonks revenge. bouncing off walls gives you a slight boost of speed and keep it by spinning, but its only about as fast as having meat power. theirs a small improvement in 1-2 that I'll probably go back to fix but it probably won't save more then 30 frames.

this games been desyncing quite a bit, sometimes the game flat out resets out of the blue. kinda bugging me. also after I finished optimizing 1-2 the extra frames at the end of the movie randomly disappeared, and then magically reappeared awhile later. anyway heres my next set of WIPs:http://rapidshare.com/files/223866290/bonks_revenge_TAS.rar.html one is an optimized round 1, the other is through 2-2 (which looks awesome) I'm not sure if I should be getting 50 smilies in round 2 or not, I'm also not sure if getting a big meet in 2-2 would save enough time in 2-3 to be worth it.

Ctrl+R is the reset button in mednafen. Are you sure you aren't hitting that (and recording it into the movie) by accident?

Rather try the new version of mednafen, i didnt had time to test out already (kinda busy on other things) but it seem paul tryed to fix reset stuff I had same reset problem in granzort, you can remove the key (hex edit movie...), for me it did resync after removal I think it would be weird whe both hitted the reset key accidentally, also at second tryout, i had the key unmaped and it still got in the movie somehow :p I had also extra frames (lot more tought) at the end of the movie, wasnt a big issue for me but require to hex the movie when its complete

that seems like a feasible reason since ctrl+shift+r is record. I'll look into the new version.

aruKado, can you post the hexed movie file? My download of the original, as expected, resets right at the beginning of the movie, so I can't view it. I'm not hex savvy.

well I finished round three, but had 4 or 5 reset desyncs on the way, so the new version obviously didn't fix the problem entirely. early tests are telling me that skipping round 4 and 6 will probably be optimal, so I'll probably have to redo round 3. I think I'm starting to lose my motivation due mainly to not knowing whether or not to skip rounds. http://rapidshare.com/files/225058730/bonksrevenge.mcm.html

Play the game normally a couple times instead of trying to TAS every level in turn. If you have a feel for the mechanics of the game you can probably determine which levels you need to skip without having to go all out on them. I should also note that with the newer Mednafen the mcm file still resets right off the bat and stops the movie.

finished round 4. and round 5 is definitly not worth skipping (did it in about 8000 frames with only a few save states and no slow down) I'm not entirely sure of I should skip round 6 or not, its looking like getting 50 smilies in round 5 would take quite a while, but round 6 would probably also take awhile. http://rapidshare.com/files/226597579/bonksrevenge.mcm.html

I still cannot play this file back in the latest mednafen build. As soon as mednafen opens it resets and playback is stopped. Any way to resolve this?

Looks good so far, nice work. Are you using this version of mednafen? If so, did it fix the reset problems?
Any way to resolve this?
Make sure you are using full paths for the movie and game (C:\mednafen\game.pce) and that there aren't any spaces or symbols in that path.

I haven't tried the newest version yet. I assume that simply unmapping the reset keys will fix it though as it seems to only happen when I'm starting/stopping recording. (although it doesn't seem to me like I'm pressing ctrl+r with out pressing ctrl+shift+r) interestingly enough ctrl+r does nothing when playing the game and only affects the way it plays back. I also don't think this problem will bother me that much anymore as I figured out you can just rerecord over a few frames by the reset.

I don't know why you would be having trouble with the video resetting and stopping as it works fine for me, but if you're using lmednafen be sure you have the movie and rom files in the same directory as I had trouble with the dragonegg movie because of this. also I think someone needs to teach me to hexedit, there's a small strategy change in 1-4 that would save me about 200 frames. and I don't want to have to redo the rest of the game just for that.

@paul_t I was using the latest mednafen on the website posted for this area of the forum, version 137. I just tried with the one you suggested and it does the same thing. Mednafen opens, and then it immediately resets, with the upper left corner reading "stopped", the frame count (?), and "2" below that. I've been using the following command via a batch file I just edit for each case: mednafen -mov D:\Consol~1\TG-16\mcm\bonksr~1.mcm D:\Consol~1\TG-16\ROMS\bonk's~1.zip This same format worked fine for Adelikat's submission of Dragon Egg (now published).

Just for the sake of testing, copy the movie to D:\ and rename it bonk.mcm. mednafen -mov D:\bonk.mcm D:\Consol~1\TG-16\ROMS\bonk's~1.zip

Testing reports no change. This is indeed a bizarre problem.

I finished round 5 and also went back and redid almost the whole game so far to save 793 frames total. http://rapidshare.com/files/233171069/bonks_revenge_TAS.rar.html

I forgot to mention that I'll probably need help hex editing out the extra frames when I finish this run. and I think I figured out how to avoid resets. if you start recording while in freeze frame and then load a save state with out the frame advancing it will put a reset on the frame of the save state.

Bonk's Revenge is the sequel to the first game in the series. I've been noticing some mistakes in the published run so I tried to see if I could improve on it, so far I managed to save 4 seconds in the first world. there might be more time I can save in the first world and I will try to find as much as I can. Here's what I have so far: Link to video

I'm not much familiar with Bonk games, but some flower boost would be still possible in this sequel? Also, good luck improving the published run!
My homepage --Currently not much motived for TASing as before...-- But I'm still working.
