There was a promotional video made many years ago, but it is long overdue for a new one. So Cardboard and I collaborated and created a new TASVideos promotional video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mregEW6kVU&t=5s The goal was to try to show off a lot of inhuman gameplay as well as show as much variety of platforms as possible. Feel free to use this thread to nitpick it to death. Just keep in mind there are a LOT of mind blowing moments on TASVideos and I can't put them all in. Some got in, some didn't. Ask 20 TASers, and they would pick 20 different moments that are different from the other 20 peoples moments. There is not way to have a consensus so try to stay civil with the "I think x should be have been in there not y". Also keep in mind you aren't the target audience. The goal is to expose people who have never seen or heard of a TAS.

Nice concept (like it was in the past :)) and good compilation I'd say :D Although obviously very personal... I don't like the music in it I'm not in it :(

Make sure you watch the DailyMotion HQ version (select it in the dropbox if it's not on). It has better soundtrack, though still speedmetal.

Haha, the intro was awesome. My feedback: * Showing Wood Man stage in its entirety is a bit of overkill, in my opinion, especially since you don't actually see Mega Man himself for the first few bits and the dying at the end won't make any sense unless you understand the glitch involved. It'd be enough, in my opinion, to just show a few screens of how utterly broken the screen scrolling is. * I see we got some vanity in via Gradius, hmm? ;) IMO a better Gradius section would be the Moai heads -- it's more instantly recognizable, and IIRC it includes flying through terrain; always fun. * Likewise, do we have a better bomb-hover segment we could include? The one shown is a bit hard to decipher -- both as to what's going on and as to what it accomplishes. Maybe use one of the ones MrGrunz has published on his YouTube channel? They aren't in any official movies yet, but they will be...eventually. Otherwise, very nice!

Nice video! I was hoping to see a mention to normal speedrunning. It could spark a really heated discussion though, so I can see why you didn't.

Yeah, it's best to avoid any connotations to unassisted speedrunning in the context of the intro.

I would have preferred to see a super slide, since it's a pretty "wtf" glitch that still looks fast and useful. Other than that, looking good. Will be showing it to some friends :)

I agree that this is long overdue. This video is a good start, but there are a few things that kind of jumped out at me. Also, I will try to limit my comments to the aesthetics of the video rather than what you did or didn't include. You might be able to word the intro better or think of a new concept for it. I don't know. The comments combined with the style of play seemed off to me. Also, it might have been too long. Say your piece and get to the good stuff faster. There were some clips that seemed disproportionately longer than the others. Some that stand out to me are Excitebike, Mega Man 2, Ocarina of Time and Sonic Advance. I think you want to limit yourself to 10 seconds a clip, only going over if this is a truly amazing thing that takes longer to appreciate. Also, can you find a point in the Excitebike run where the biker goes over a ramp and wraps around multiple times. I know there are a few. I don't have any problems with the music used, personally. You want to have something that's high energy and having the video game tie in with the melody (at least I think I was hearing the Castlevania theme in there) is kind of cool. One thing I would like to see is having the music and the video sync a bit. Find the high points in the music and try to have the video reflect it. As it stands right now, you could probably put any music you want over the video and not change the quality that much. I think giving priority to things that look fast as opposed to "wft" would be best, although if something is very obviously "wtf," you can include that, especially if it's also fast. But seriously, thank you for getting this discussion started again and actually producing something we can use.

I think this video was quite well done. Unlike other have said, personally I didn't find any of the segments too long (including the intro, which I think was cool).

Rather than everyone stating an opinion on what segments should have been in it. Let's talk more about what to do with it. I would like it imbedded on the site. Perhaps the homepage, perhaps our why and how. Any opinions? Also, I'm considering making it a torrent download as well (high quality version). Also, perhaps adding it to other streaming media sites that we don't have an account on.

Yes. Using it as a showreel on the homepage is something I wanted to suggest myself.

Yes, please (although this is low priority due to limited use).

Might be a good idea. There aren't many of them that are really popular, though. I guess I can only name Vimeo and Metacafe.

What about nicovideo? Would one of our Japanese-speaking members be willing to translate the text (or add subtitles)? We could start linking it in the descriptions of other TASes that we upload to video sites. Sort of a "Wondering what a TAS is? Watch this demo reel" type of thing.

Intro was a bit too long for my taste. OoT had a bad scene, the wood man stage was too long and Sonic Advance 2 had a slow looking stage. You can't satisfy anybody with the picks, but I guess very few OoT fans would have picked this scene. Anyhow, it's too late now anyway, isn't it? ;) Love it otherwise, hurray for the Moonlight Sonata! One of the first favourite songs I had. ^^

For OoT it would have been better to have choosen the trick in the Fire temple around about 1:48:45 . Generally I thought many games were given too much exposure time, but I did like the intro.

Overall I liked it. The majority of the clips were nice. Most of all I liked that someone finally went and did it after people asked for a new one for a long time. Thanks! If there is something to change, it would be changing "There are those that refuse to stay mortal" to "We refuse to stay mortal", "We refuse to follow the rules" etc.

Oh, hey, I've finally been picked as part of a promotional! I can now leave the community satisfied*. Not bad, and it is nice to have an updated promotional video. However, I better liked how the older one was organized. What I think could improve the movie a bit is to have it categorized when you hit the "There are those" part. For instance, when it says, "There are those who refuse the follow the rules," show clips from the glitched Zelda 2 and the Woodman stage and such. "Those who refuse to accept the word 'impossible'" would be followed by clips of Mario 64 and some other things. I also think it would be kinda nice to have each clip be accompanied by a music-video-style blurb in the corner concerning author, game title, system, and time. But whatever. I liked it. Also, what was that game right after my Metroid 2 segment? It wasn't listed in the credits. *Isn't actually leaving

You mean Castlevania: Rondo of Blood?

I think that's the Turbografix Castlevania, which is listed before Street Fighter in the credits. EDIT: There are comments on the Youtube video now. These might be helpful considering they are possibly from our intended audience.

Excellent work guys! A couple small nitpicks, but the overall purpose of the video comes across really well, and shows a good amount of variety. Embedding on the main page is a good idea, but to get further exposure you could digg it (or one of the other hundred sites like it). Or have people link it on their mybook/facespace pages; I'll probably do that later today.

Liked the video and all, but any particular reason for why the youtube version is different from the other two?
Even the best player is limited by the speed of his fingers, or his mind's ability to control them. But what happens when speed is not a factor, when theory becomes reality?

To me its perfect, one advice tought, turn off comments on youtube or be prepared for mass spamming and completly useless comments, witch will be 90% of the time "what is the music!"... even if you say it in the video

Why? It's not like you can't ignore the comments. Better there be a hundred stupid comments to every useful one than none at all. EDIT: And I really liked the video, the intro was cool and most of the clips where great. If the purpose of the video is to reach a lot of people though, there should probably be a lot more tags added to it (like all the relevant game and author names).

While that explains the audio, there are other differences as well, like the Sonic 2 clip is missing and some clips are shorter, but I'm assuming it's to make up for the different track length.

I heard adelikat saying this, yes
