Game objectives

  • Emulator: BizHawk 2.11.1
  • Game version: Europe
  • Heavy glitch usage
  • Collecting as less yellow bricks as possible
Lego Ninjago: Shadow of Ronin is an action-adventure handheld video game developed by TT Games and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It was released on March 24, 2015, in North America, March 25, 2015, in Australia, March 27, 2015, in Europe, and September 3, 2015, in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. The game is the sequel to Lego Ninjago: Nindroids which was released in 2014. It was released for iOS and Android in late 2015–early 2016.
The story starts off with Ronin (You can see him in season 5) stealing the ninjas' memories. The ninjas have to smash, build and explore their way to stop Ronin's evil plans.
My goal in TAS is to complete the game as fast as possible by using glitches that allow me to skip most of the levels

Yellow Bricks

  • Yellow bricks in this game are divided into 5 categories, one for completing a level, second for collecting enough money, 1 for unlocking a characters, and the last 2 for completing certain tasks. My goal is to collect as few of these 4 blocks as possible because collecting extra ones slows down the screen by a few seconds, The first one can’t be skipped, and some had to be collected because we’d lose time. In Chapter 1, I couldn’t skip a single one because they’re for not dying from certain incidents. In most TAS runs, I try to avoid all of that.

Movement

  • The fastest way to move is to use Dash Attack, it saves a few frames compared to running

Launch Glitch

  • Performing boosts is sometimes easy and sometimes not, it depends on the angle and the size of the object and character you're using to climb to higher Y position. We have to perform a dash attack by jumping upward to reach the Y position, then quickly open the menu and exit to perform the boost. This way, I can skip most levels, at least some of them.

Chen's Island

  • This is a tutorial level designed to introduce you to the game and our characters. Our goal is to free Jay from the trap he’s fallen into, but we’ll skip that part to save time, I’ll be doing it throughout this level.

Chen's Dungeon

  • There isn’t much to skip in this level, so I’ll get straight to the point, Jay can’t use this glitch to jump up, so I’m switching to Cole to do it. In this level, Kai and Jay are the only ones we need.
  • I’m going to the left lever to save time on Kai’s movement, if we go to the right one, Kai will go to Jay first and then turn back to use the left lever, which loses time.

Spinjago Chase

  • It’s the same as with Chen’s Island, I skip most of the level by glitching through it

Kryptarium Prison

  • There aren't any spots in this level where I can jump higher, I'm playing this level a normal way.
  • Unfortunately, I couldn't avoid Kai's death, I had to take it in order not to attack enemies, because that would cost time during the camera event.
  • I use Spinjitzu to defeat enemies faster

Crashcourse Canyon

  • It's an autoscroller, but there are a few things to discuss
  • I use the boost all the time to increase my speed, I don't use it all the way through, I let go of the Y button just before it runs out to avoid getting a Yellow Brick, because you can get one by draining the entire bar.
  • In airplane mode, I'm intentionally getting damage to reduce the number of money a little bit

Ed & Edna's Scrap N Junk

  • In this level, we have to collect all the parts to build the mechanical ninja in order to complete the level. In this level, Nya is used more often because her dash attack has faster movement and lasts 4 frames less than the other ninjas'. Jay is used with Spinjitzu to defeat enemies on the right side.

The Toxic Bogs

  • This level took longer to complete. In this level, we use a glitch that lets us jump even if we land on a toxic swamp. Kai is the only character who can perform most of this glitch more effectively than the others in this level, as far as I know from my tests, Nya can do some of the jumps but not all of them, so Kai is used more often in this level.
  • There's an RTA in Free Play that can perform this jump glitch multiple times, but it only works with smaller characters, I wasn't able to do it with Kai, so I use alternative strategies instead.
  • To do this, we first have to die, and then we have to perform a double jump and a melee attack, which will allow Kai to jump. Unfortunately, it only works in certain places, so I can't do it anywhere I want.
  • I'm using the tree to jump to the other side, there wasn't any other way I could have bounced off the stump at the top

The Skeleton Mines

  • I use Launch Glitch to skip all the way to the top and collect one of the parts.
  • Cole and Jay are the only characters we need, mainly to pick up a rock and throw it, as well as to build the drill, Zane is used for Spinjitzu to dig into the ground because switching to him after building saves a few frames

The Caves of Despair

  • We have to get power for Cole, if we don't, we won't be able to use it later in the game
  • Most levels involve movement with a few strategies and bugs, since Jay and Zane aren't with us, the only characters we use are Kai and Cole
  • At the beginning, we use a launch glitch to get to the top faster. In Free Play RTA, there are two more launches that can be used, one that skips the section with the mazes and takes you to the other side, and a second that takes you straight to the top, skipping most of the levels, but it only works with Griffin Turner, Kai and Cole can’t perform this launch, which means we have to play the normal route.
  • As far as I've checked, the bug with the melee attack on this slime doesn't work the same way as in The Toxic Bogs, when there are parts of the edge sticking out that we can jump over, we can avoid it by jumping onto the edges where we don't have to make that jumps.
  • I use a wall glitch to boost Cole up a bit, saving a few frames, possibly 1 second on the climb
  • At the very end, we normally have to defeat the snakes and destroy the blockage, but the developers left a block we can jump and jump over these blocks, skipping the entire section
