How can you jump through firebars? I think that's one of the only things I don't understand when watching smb speedruns.

What!? In the full completion you can jump partly through firebars. disreguard the first post.

AH ok, so you mean jump though firebars when Mario is Big... Graphics size != actual size.

Oh wait, Mario's top half doesn't get hurt if he ducks in water and then swims, so when he ducks and jumps through the firebar it's basically the same thing?

I was discussing Left+right glitches just now and I have another question. At the start of each level do you press left+ right together or is it left for one frame and then right?

It's left+right. Well, you can easily check the inputs to confirm.

Here's a video called "Mario Lecture". It shows off a bunch of odd bugs in the game, including one I thought impossible - jumping straight through a brick. Who here speaks Japanese and can translate this?

Most of these tricks are on the SMB tips page. There's some really weird stuff that's possible with the SMB engine, but a lot of it just isn't applicable to a TAS. There are some obscure hacks that require some of this though. (See the AIR hack for instance)

Technically it can be beaten. After 0-1, you go back to the title screen and the game thinks it has been "beaten".

Check out http://speeddemosarchive.com/Mario1.html - it has a video that claims to be 5:00 (By my count, it looks more like 5:04) but that's still short of the TAS record 5:07. Why doesn't the TAS use glitched pipes like this version - is it only present in SMB+Duck Hunt ROM?

SDA timing ignores the title screen, hence shorter time. I don't know where you got 5:07, because the actual TAS record time is 4:59.93 as shown here: http://tasvideos.org/374M.html (includes title screen).
