Yeah, we've seen plenty of hard Mario hacks already. Super Mario Forever, Kaizo Mario World, Air, etc. However, Hard Relay Mario stands out simply because it's the hardest. I realize that's subjective, but most hardhacks can be completed if not without savestates, then at least in real time. This was ridiculously hard to complete even when TASing it. This hack was created by six prominent SMB hackers, including U1 (who created Air) and Mana. (who once had an SMB run published here). The following changes are made in this hack:
  • The levels, obviously.
  • A new block I "affectionately" refer to as instakill spikes. No matter what state Mario is in (fire, big, small, invincible, whatever), he will die upon touching this block's hitbox, which is about as large as the block itself.
  • The vines are now clouds and every invisible block is marked. These are merely cosmetic changes.
Other than that, the engine is exactly the same. Everything performed in this movie is doable on the real game, should the stage allow for it.
I'm not going to write individual level notes, as there's just too much stuff to go over. However, this run improves over the last one through more precision, elimination of all unnecessary waiting and minimization of all necessary waiting, among other things. As a side effect, these make the run almost a minute shorter. Enjoy.

adelikat: This game may be hard but the result often is less than pleasing (such as waiting for koopas to respawn and walk across the screen). Impossibly hard hacks tend to not go over well with the TAS audience. In addition, we already have Air, which fills the impossibly hard smb hack niche quite sufficiently.
As a result, I must reject this run. Sorry.

I vote yes for very impressive showcase of game mechanics. Good job.

I completely agree with what Deign said for both voting and what I noticed when viewing this improvement. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Doesn't include the extra levels (2-x, 3-x, etc), voting no. Some parts just seemed like wasted time (shots hitting platforms instead of Bowser, etc) as well.

Only one stage is even worth showing. Why didn't I show it? I dunno. It's one stage. It's hardly worth voting no over.
shots hitting platforms instead of Bowser
I still don't understand the "mechanics" of the Bowser fight, because a hit on the platform seems like it counts for a hit on Bowser too; at least that's what the clear movie led me to believe.

At 03:04, did you delibrately fall down because I see no reason why you did that. 04:20ish was a really funny moment :) I did not understand what happened at around 06:02. World 1-A was the most entertaining, albeit difficult part of the game. Edit: Too bad you have to wait for the turtle at various parts. because in my opinion, that completely messes with your momentum and with the entertainment.

I was under the impression that fire mario's shots bounce?

Yes, that was deliberate, because if I were to turn around and start running for the far away block, the plant would've lowered before I could get enough speed to make the jump. In that section I basically have to get their "cycles" in the right sync so I can make the jump without getting hit.
I did not understand what happened at around 06:02.
Rapid jumping so the lift wouldn't pull me through the bottom block. It could probably have been done with a single jump, but I doubt it would result in anything significant.

They'll bounce on the spikes occasionally, though I have no idea what makes them do that.

Nice to see some glitches. Not nice to see them 10 times per level. The run doesn't flow well at all, and I found it boring. It looks like it was played well, for the most part, but the game choice I found very bleh. The part where you move slightly left and right to make the screen scroll is very stupid in my opinion, and takes away a lot of the flow. I also hated waiting for the koopa. This reminds me of Michael Fried's Mario Kart 64 Mario Raceway single lap TAS. A noteable accomplishment, but not worth publishing on the site. A no vote.

Well, for starters, I'll go ahead and answer the question at the top. I did actually enjoy this movie because without Tool-Assistance, it's very improbable that this game would be completed, heh. Besides that, it's not too bad a run, you know, there are a lot worse hacks out there. On the other hand, I can't see this getting published. I see what it offers but is it deemed enough? My gut says no, sorry mushroom. But, hey, it was pretty well done. One last thing, I'll ask you, did you enjoy working on this run?

Most of the time, yes, I did enjoy it. Parts of 1-A are really unfun to do, but most of it came out pretty nicely.

Well, it had too much waiting for turtles, and some parts still seemed unoptimal, but that bowser fight was amazing. That last boss fight alone makes up for the movie's other weaknesses and merits a yes vote.

Yes vote. Both my wife and I were entertained whilst being throughly confused.
I think i've watched about 70% of the TAS's on this site... It's become one of the first sites I check daily for updates. I'm going to start posting more.

A definite improvement. I can see where most of the waiting around still present is essential, though I'm still not 100% convinced that the progression is optimal. This run is a little better at keeping attention spans up during the watch and wait segments, but there are still a couple instances left where Mario is just standing still, waiting for a Koopa to leisurely stroll across the screen. I know there's not a lot you can do about that, but any motion is good. It's a speed run, Mario should be impatient. I dunno. It's worth watching, but I'm thinking that Air was a better hack for this sort of thing. I'm glad you at least enjoy the work you've put into it, but if it has to be a Mario hack, I'd pick something with less waiting around (or at least an arena with more things to do while waiting around).
Kirby said so, so it must be true. ( >'.')>

Keep in mind that the YouTube video leaves some of the stuff done during wait periods out, due to its apparent 30fps limit. Not that you're missing much, but I figure it's worth mentioning.

I had an idea to do Air 2, which is Air but with no infinite jumps, but it turned out that the most prevalent solution is to just run across the top of the stage, so I nixed that early on as something to put a lot of effort into (you can see the "pseudo-tas" at my youtube channel). Other than that, HRM is pretty much everything ever done in any hard Mario hack compressed into ten stages, and I figured it would be a great game for a superplay given that it's Mario, it's impossibly hard and it features a ridiculous number of glitches. I'm very proud of and very much enjoy watching this movie (which is way more than I can say for...say, Animaniacs), but I guess I have much more of a geeky fixation on this particular game's engine than most other TASers. Also, thanks for watching and for giving comments, everyone :)

Nice improvement, technically and stylistically. I was wondering though, why did you kick the koopa into yourself in 1-6? I know you needed to be small to get under the spikes, but wouldn't it have been faster to duck-slide into it?

It was better than the last run, but still relatively boring. Sorry man, the game is just bad, and requires a lot more waiting than the "Air" hack, even if it is the hardest one out there. I'm changing my vote from "No" to "Meh".

There isn't enough room to slide under. If you tried it, you wouldn't be able to clear the spikes, and would be instantly killed.

I'm just saying, he could use whatever leeway the spikes will allow to edge closer to the koopa, let it hit him, then run on through the rest of the level. I tested it just now, and it seems to have saved about 50 frames... but does something go wrong later in the level, doing it this way?
