Notes

Im proud to introduce the first Sega Saturn movie on tasvideos.org, and especially with my favorite game : Castlevania

The saturn port of SOTN is a little inferrior on graphic side, but got a few "extras":
  • Maria is a playable character (sensibly the same gameplay than richter).
  • Richter got an alternate costume available, and selectable from clear sram unlike psx.
  • There is 2 extra levels, for a total of 100 new rooms counting both castles (94 if you de-count the psx fake underground garden).
  • Two new boss (one been Maria in Alucard gameplay).
  • One new relic for Alucard (let you run like richter/maria).
  • A couple of items, armors and weapons for Alucard.
  • Many small difference in the engine, bug fix or new ones introduced, a complete list would be useless and pretty hard to make, this faq details somes.

On saturn version its not possible to use the glitch to get outside the inverted keep like in this movie with richter on psx, in order to make maria movie a little more entertaining, im using the glitch to get outside chapel, witch is not available on psx.
Alltought from what i could test so far, it would be faster (not by a lot) to stay inside the castle.

The video i uploaded on youtube use a little fix that is not included (yet) in the release of yabause, to make the start menu looking better, if you want this; in turtoisesvn revert revision186 / recompile

Out Of Boundary Glitch

A video recap of the technique can be found here

For alucard and maria, its quite simple, what you want to do is to use backdash near the target door (keep or inverted chapel), push forward the direction your character is facing while backdash and repeat until you "touch" the door, keep pressing direction and youll "warp"

For richter its a bit more complicated, the only way to get the same "effect" is to use the airdash, at the end of airdash you got a few frames where you can "extra" jump, if you land on door exactly on the frame your given back control and input direction, youll "warp" like maria & alucard

Optimizations

By all means this movie is improvable, first with(out) the out of bondary glitch, secondly, because i admit i "didnt worked enought" on it, i except some violent "no" votes, but well, i submit because theres a new emulator release and whe need a movie i think
I worked on this about 5 days, and the week before i made richter run
Im already starting to improve this run, and i hope to come with more optimizations soon, ill try not to spoil too much about it:
-I could have filled in MP before medusa in the save room (and use her "flamme thrower" spell)
-Maria got so many movements at her disposal... its VERY hard to say whats the best tactic to move around... i except some changes for a "perfect" run (not that many tought)
-Theres might be a way to shorten last boss by casting the spell before trigger boss and just let maria sit around, eventually he would die by hoovering on you

Closings

Thanks to paul_t, adelikat and the yabause(&RR) team for making Sega Saturn TAS reality!

A special dedicace to paulo1179 who was collaborating with me few years ago when finding the OoB technique with maria/richter, he showed me how to shift the keep, then i founded how to make it happen with backdash(alucard/maria) or airdash(richter), later on he applyed this to inverted chapel.

Whe hope youll enjoy this movie and saturn tasing gets prolific in futur!

Didn't play with the "Now Loading" message. Voting no. :p It's like Maria's moveset was expressly designed to make navigating the grand staircase in the chapel easy. Why did you visit a saveroom before fighting Medusa? What happened there? It looked like Maria clipped through the ceiling for a bit in Olrox's Quarters while doing her flying kick. Or maybe she just has a really weird hitbox when she does that move. Could you please explain the different moves? What was the attack you used on Shaft? Overall, it seemed reasonably well-made, though I have this vague feeling that the movement could be significantly more optimized. Nothing specific; the movie just didn't feel "tight" to me. However, I enjoyed watching it, so you get a weak yes.

I use the glitch, doesnt save anything (even maybe loose a bit of time), the idea was to use it as much as i could

From zeeke faq:
1) Triple Jump: Jump, Jump, Jump
Just like the Leap Stone, only better.

2) Leap Stone Stomp: Jump, Jump, Jump, D + Jump
Just like the Leap Stone, only better. Is there an echo in here?

3) Super Jump: D, U + Jump (Can be repeated in mid-air) * LEARN THIS *
A la Richter; Maria causes damage to any enemy she plows through with
   this move. (2 MP)

4) Dash: F, F
   Again, just like Richter.

5) Slide: D + Jump.
   Nothing to say here...

6) Dash Kick: F, F + Kick
Pretty self-explanatory. Press Kick quickly for Maria to flip off
anything she hits, or hold Kick to kick through whatever is in her
   path.

7) Fireball: Fire
Launches a fireball. The fireball can be charged to up to four levels
(kind of like Mega Man) by holding the Fire button down. Can be done
   in mid-air. (2 MP/3 MP/8 MP/18 MP)

8) Guardian Knuckle: D, DF, F + Fire
Maria does a dashing punch with an electric fist. (12 MP)

9) Flameburst: U, D, DF, F + Fire
Maria unleashes a powerful flameburst. (30 MP)

10) Turtle Healing: D, DB, B, UB, U, UF, F, DF, D + Fire
Maria will recover some life. (23 MP)

11) Owl Summon: Charge U, UF, F, DF, D + Fire
Maria will summon an Owl companion, which acts sort of like Alucard's
   Bat familiar. (18 MP)

12) Dragon Summon: F, B, DB, D, DF, F, B + Fire
Summons a Dragon (looks like it came right out of Salamander :) that
you will be in direct control of until the spell expires. (35 MP)

13) Invincibility: U, UF, F, DF, D, DB, B, UB, Charge U, D + Fire
Maria will be fully invincible for about 40 seconds or so. In addition,
some of her physical attacks will increase in power and become Holy
    elemental. (43 MP)
I used invincibility against shaft, also mp values are wrong in this

i don't have a problem with this run. it's really fast, and i couldn't spot the speed/entertainment tradeoffs. there's nothing that immediately jumps out as a mistake. i vote yes.

The only trade off is that going outside trought the glitch is slower than staying inside :D

Wow, Maria is crazy good. I think I enjoyed this SotN run more than the other three I have seen so far.

I don't know, I didn't think the movie felt quite as smooth as the other two. It felt stickier and stiffer for some reason. Still good movie, and good signs of progress.

The saturn version is pretty much slower than psx, and have some extra load spots Alltought, if you compare this to (saturn) richter run, i actually beat richter time All in all, maria is probably the fastest character, if she was available on psx (she's on psp...) she would be the fastest run i believe

Well, I don't think it's better than Richter, mainly because Maria looks rather "copypasted" into the game. Also, arukAdo, that alternative costume Richter has is NOT what he's wearing at the colosseum. He's does not have the gauntlets and his hair is still black, for example. It looks more like a lame hacked sprite. Yes vote, anyway.
"Genuine self-esteem, however, consists not of causeless feelings, but of certain knowledge about yourself. It rests on the conviction that you — by your choices, effort and actions — have made yourself into the kind of person able to deal with reality. It is the conviction — based on the evidence of your own volitional functioning — that you are fundamentally able to succeed in life and, therefore, are deserving of that success." - Onkar Ghate

I enjoyed the variety of movement methods, and overall the thing seemed very tight. I also think it's a very fitting game to be submitted for the first Saturn TAS. Yes from me.

I'm not sure this is worth keeping. It's virtually identical to the Richter PSX TAS except with some extra loading screens and an even more boring way to defeat the bosses.
Voted NO for NO reason
