Another famtasia movie bites the dust!
Note the sha1 of the disksys.rom FDS bios used is: 57FE1BDEE955BB48D357E463CCBF129496930B62
As always, I have provided a release package on my SVN. It includes the movie file, submission text, screenshots, a spreadsheet, and a lua script.
Important! This movie must be played on FCEUX2.1.2or later. Prior versions do not support the recording of disk ejecting/switching inserting.

Improvements

This is an improvement over the current published movie by BagofMagicFood. Due to better emulation over famtasia this movie is actually 2665 (~44.3 seconds) frames slower than the published movie.
I don't know the exact amount that this movie improves the published movie due to several factors such as emulation differences and the lack fo a frame counter in famtasia. In addition, I have no idea the numbers or names of any of the rooms so I dont' have a specific location of improvements. Here is a list of the most significant improvements. And if it wasn't confusing enough, famtasia's fps is 60, where FCEUX is ~60.1 resulting in even more disparity between reported times.
  • Room at about 9800 (my movie)
    • Better strategy for handling the red rolling enemy thing at the bottom of the screen.
  • Room at about 29000
    • 16 frames better route to the key
  • Room at about 30000
    • 6 frames saved from frame optimizations
  • Room at about 40000
    • 16 frames saved from better enemy manipulation
In addition, there are various 1-2 frame improvements here and there due to having frame advance precision compared to the published movie. Such improvements are rather mundane for a game like this so I didn't keep track of them.

Emulation

Famtasia improperly emulated FDS disk load times. As a result, every loading screen in the published movie was ~122-124 frames faster than it should have been. This submission is slower, but reflect better emulation accuracy.
In summary, regardless of reported times, this is a small improvement over the published movie. In addition, it is done with a modern emulator that features better emulation quality.

Movie details

This movie (as well as the previous movie ) exploits an egg glitch that allows lolo to warp to another part of a screen (or another screen) by shooting an egg that he is on while it is going into water.
It also features a death shortcut to make lolo appear on a different part of the screen.

Possible screenshots

(Note to publishers, these are already optimized)

Thanks

Thanks to BagofMagicFood for a very optimized movie (especially with famtasia!) and for assistance in making this movie.

Summary

  • Requires FCEUX 2.1.2 for playback
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Uses death as a shortcut
  • Abuses programming errors in the game
  • Genre: Puzzle

Baxter: One step closer to ridding the world (err, TASVideos) of Famtasia movies. Accepting as an improvement to the published run.

adelikat: Processing.

Awesome run! The egg glitch is quite funny to watch. Yes vote.

The file was not muxed with "no_simpleblocks" (thanks Raiscan for the tip), reuploading a fixed version shortly. Edit 3: Link updated with correct mux. Edit 4: Added mediafire link. Edit 5: Added MP4 versions of the file for better VLC compatibility Edit 6: Fixed filename in archive downloads.

I guess it's surprising that the old run got improved by so little strategically; tons of credit goes to Bag Of Magic Food for that. The game is a little more entertaining than most Lolo games, I think, since the layout is more varied and there's MORE THAN ONE background song. It's a shame the egg glitch didn't seem useful more often. Also, it's good to see the blatant abuse of Don Medusa. Lastly, it was amusing to see the entire "final battle" played and won without any input. I guess this deserves a Yes vote as an improvement to the published run. I'm curious though: if Famtasia doesn't have a frame counter, then how do you know that many rooms were improved by 1 or 2 frames?
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:

I realize this may sound silly, but would it be possible to compare times by calculating frames in the .avi-file for the old run? I remember doing that when I did my first Solstice run (the published run was an .fmv at the time), and it actually worked fairly well. I know BSPlayer comes with a frame counter and frame advance, but I guess a lot of other media players do as well.

I love this game. mklip, it's impossible to lose the final battle :)

That is what I did. I used VDub to advance frame by frame through the avi. It seemed to be largely accurate. However, I don't know that it was 100% accurate so I took calculations with a bit of skepticism. Also yeah, Bag did a great job with his movie especially given the shortcomings of famtasia.

Yes-vote Will you go after Bubble Bobble and Solomon's key as well, now that you are done with Eggerland? Seems like those two are the only one left of the famtasia emulator.

Me and Tompa (and a few others) have been working on bubble bubble slowly for awhile now. We are currently on level 52. I started solomon's key, however, it is a lot less fun than I thought it would be. I'm hoping someone (Randil) works on it.

Ok, so we're not to expect it anytime soon then? Hope you make it.

Hmm, are you insinuating something? ;) If it wasn't for the great amount of randomness in Solomon's Key, I'd be more motivated to work on it. Well, I might pick it up again sometime, but I have other stuff going on right now. Although I do agree that the day when all Famtasia runs have been obsoleted will indeed be a day of great rejoice.

I'm implying that your are the perfect man for the job. Solomon's key is exactly the type of game you do well! If you get going on it, I'll promise to go hardcore on bubble bobble :)

For the mkv and mp4, I am getting excessively jerky movements made. This occurs most prominently in the level starting around 1:30. UraniumAnchor also seems to be having a couple of problems with it streaking everywhere. Aktan, can you take a look and see if you can see the same problems?

I tried the MP4 in VLC and MPC. Both look fine. What player are you and UraniumAnchor using? UraniumAnchor's problem sound like old H.264 decoder, while yours sound like another bad demuxer. MP4 was used because the demuxers for it are more mature.

Yeah, it works on my other machine, so maybe I just have to update this one. Can't remember if I have recently. VLC chokes no matter what, I get no video stream even with the latest version.

That is with the MP4? Interesting, since I have the latest VLC and it works fine. What OS are you running?

XP on one, Vista on the other. Latest VLC on both and neither works. Whichever, MPC played it fine on this one once I updated ffdshow.

I'm baffled. I have VLC Version 1.0.3 on Windows XP and the MP4 works completely fine. The MKV on the other hand, does not. Very weird to me, VLC is default settings...
