Mole Mania, known as Moguranya (モグラ~ニャ) in Japan, is an action puzzle game. The main character is a mole named Muddy Mole, whose wife and children have been kidnapped by the farmer, Jinbe. Muddy has to go to Jinbe Land and save his family. In the game, the player will solve puzzles by moving a black ball to a gate. However, there are many obstacles and enemies in the way. Therefore the player will dig into ground to find ways around them.

Game objectives

  • Emulator: VisualBoyAdvance 1.7.2 re-recording v19.5
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Manipulates luck
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Uses a game restart sequence

About the run

This run skips 6 levels out of 8 by abusing reset glitch. You can unlock the final stage if you reset in the bonus stage of level 1, but you need to beat Kangaroon before abusing the glitch. After resetting, level 1 will be corrupted and take you to a glitched map. Then, returning to the level select screen from there will show you a broken score results screen and unlock the final stage.

Data for each level

TimeScore
Level 175h 18m 26s58pts
Level 20s19pts
Level 30s126pts
Level 40s18pts

Level 60s119pts
Level 70s205pts
Level 85m 24sNo evaluation for points

These records are glitched.

Thanks to...

  • Yotchan, for demonstrating the reset glitch.

GabCM: Added Dailymotion module, sir!
klmz: Claimed for judging.
GabCM: Replaced Dailymotion for YouTube, sir!

klmz: The major sequence-breaking glitch used in this run seemed to be real. I suppose this run is what we want published. Accepted.

I saw the run on your channel, and it neat! Btw, how exactly did you find this glitch?

This is my favorite puzzle game for the Game Boy which I spent a lot of time playing growing up (well, that and "Nail and Scale", which could be a decent game for TAS abuse). I'm thrilled that a run of this game has made it to the workbench. This run doesn't really do the game justice, though, by only fully playing the level with the easiest puzzles. I'm still quite impressed and amused by the run though. Several comments: * In the first room with the dinosaur-like enemies, would it be faster to kill the last enemy instead of taking damage off him? * Wow, I never knew you could make enemies turn around by diving into solid pavement! * Great job with the boss battles! You had pretty good playaround during the waiting periods too. My favorites were the TAS word underground during Boss 3 and sticking your butt out of Boss 4 when he died. Thank you for the encode, Mister Epic, and thank you for the run, Ryuto! You get my Yes vote. Do you think you'd make a full run of this game?
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. The completion time of Level 8 was 5m23s instead of 5m 24s as I saw after the movie ended. Any explanation?
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do

This submission clocks in around 1/13th as long as Desert Bus, but it feels much shorter. You spelled out TAS. The mole is wearing sunglasses. Also, the run was well played. Yes vote.

It would be stupid to use anything but this screenshot for publication.

Wow, This was way more entertaining than I thought. I guess it kinda helps that the game is way higher quality than most puzzle games. But there was also a ton of action that kept me on the edge of my seat till the end. Super Yes Vote. Great Job Ryuto!

I've always liked this game, really loved it. But watching it being raped and finished in a couple of minutes makes me... oh, I'm so deeper in love with TAS, if voting "Hell Yes"

I second the desire for a full run of the game, though this is great already.

Yotchan found the glitch and explain it on Nicovideo. I don't know how he found it, though.

Nope. If I take damage, it will be one frame slower.

Yes, I'm considering doing that. The reset glitch might be also useful in some stages and save a lot of frames.

The game told me how much time I had spent in each level, and the record was 5m 24s. Maybe the time was rounded off.

If you do a full run, I think that the best approach would be not using the reset glitch at all.

Thanks for the response, Ryuto! I would also agree with Zeupar, though, that a full run would be most interesting without the reset glitch. I have two reasons: 1. The main point of a full run would be to show off the diversity of puzzles in the game. You wouldn't have to get 100% on the stages... in fact, part of the appeal of a full run would be to demonstrate the best route for which puzzles to solve. 2. If a run used the reset glitch, but didn't use it to go straight to the ending, it would be difficult to explain the goals of the movie in a consistent way. It's sort of like the issue with trying to make a Super Mario 64 movie without BLJ... if you disallow BLJ but allow some of the other tricks, what's the point? Anyway, I really look forward to any progress with a full run of Mole Mania! EDIT: Currently there's no thread in the Game Boy forums for this game. If one gets created, you could post a link to it.
