I am proud to present the first Windows TAS! It is for Warp Game, an awesome freeware Game Maker platformer that was recently ported to flash. Many TAS glitches are used to shorten time.

  • Used hourglass-r11, should sync with the most recent revision.
  • Manipulates luck.
  • Abuses programming errors in the game.

Tricks

  • If you are a pixel away from an enemy and you jump, you will kill the enemy instead of dying like you regularly will. Used alot throughout the run.
  • Jumping makes you lose a few frames, so I avoid doing it whenever I can.
  • Hitting the ceiling during a jump is not good, as you freeze momentarily.
  • I hit ledges while falling to fall faster.

Possible Improvements

  • This TAS is maybe improvable if you can get RAM watch working for this game in Hourglass to monitor speed better or something.
  • In level 4 it is faster to warp from the left to get in the pit, but all enemies in this game are set on timers and it causes a spike guy (the unkillable dudes) in level 28 to spawn in a dumb place. If anyone wants to try improving this, try finding the RNG address and manipulating that better.

Enjoy the first Windows TAS! I may have a go at this game some other time, but I'm proud with my effort here. I don't think the rerecord count is right, because I spliced some input via hex editor into a blank wtf file.

Like Grunt said here, this isn't exactly an emulator. However Hourglass doesn't not currently fully support this game. For now I am rejecting this submission. However, people are indicating that should Hourglass eventually support sound for this game that the movie would still sync? If so I would be willing to unreject this submission should if/when this happens.
This run should not be considered until proper sound support is added. Perhaps it should be delayed until then?

If this one get published,I will take some PC games into my consideration.Some easy games are suitable for TASing. This is a fast-paced game.I haven't played it yet. So many good PC games to choose,and I like this one.Yes vote already. How about Syobon Action? I'm TASing it.It's a humorous Super Mario Bros. Maybe it is not very entertaining for watching. I will wait this judgement and complete my runs at first.

He's working hard. Hourglass was just released publicly a couple weeks ago. Precise, low-level reversing and coding takes time.

I mean, "don't judge the run until it is known that an actual encode of it with sound and video can be produced". Otherwise it will sit there in limbo, unable to go anywhere. This is one of the reasons that rule exists in the first place - if an encoder can't get your run to run well enough in the first place, it can't be published, and accepting it is an exercise in futility.

It is known that an encode can be produced. The video dumping works perfectly and the audio can be recorded by some other means (many available options).

Being able to dump video and audio is not sufficient to produce an encode - the two tracks must also be in sync (or can be made to be so without excessive effort).

Other video players (on my machine, anyway) fail at playing lagarith for some reason, but it's only for storage and editing anyway. Feel free to encode my dump since I fail at x264 and dedup, etc.

One of the statuses that judges can set, aside from "accepted" and "rejected" is "delayed", which indicates that judgement on the TAS is suspended pending further development (usually indicated in the thread or edited into the submission text).

bad game choice, I feel like voting no also, does the game have no acceleration? I certainly haven't seen any effort in trying to optimize it, so I guess there's none

well I just watched an the encode with sound and I was fairly impressed. although I don't understand tool assisting with windows games. I voted yes for entertainment value, but with my knowledge I can't really appreciate the technical value.

Now that it's been established that this is encodeable, let me turn my attention to the game itself. Basically, what we have here is a simple platformer, with the occasional enemy and powerup (particularly in later stages). It's not absurdly slow-paced, but that may be one of the only things it has going for it - the changes to the established gameplay patterns don't happen quickly enough to prevent it from feeling repetitive by the game's end. The optimal solution to any given level is, generally, obvious, and tends to admit very little in the way of breaking those established patterns due to the nature of the game. This implies that an experienced player of the game could come extremely close to presenting the same result that's shown here. I'll also point out that there are some questionable route choices in early levels that have been pointed out by others; for a game with gameplay this simple, I don't consider that to be acceptable. From my view, this run fails on both entertainment and technical qualities (not to mention my earlier beef that Hourglass itself doesn't capture the game's sound properly for encoding purposes), and I vote no.

Voting meh for game choice. The run itself is pretty fast-paced (and fairly short), but it just doesn't seem very interesting to me.

This is definitely *not* the type of game I expected to see as the first submitted Windows TAS. With that said, it is distinctly different than any other run currently on the site due to its .. er.. Flashy nature. I found the game to be fairly fast-paced and I'm not convinced that a skilled player could complete a manual speedrun at close to the same speed because some of the enemy jumping appeared to be very precise. I actually enjoyed the simplicity of the artwork and the piano-backed music, but that's personal taste. Will this specific game last the test of time? That's hard to say - assuming emulator support continues to expand to a large number of games I suspect the pool of submitted and published runs will become very large. This one is not likely to be rated in the top 1% of those games once the pool size grows but I feel it does hold its own as worthy of publication. Yes vote from me - please do more Windows runs, preferably of something that isn't a platformer. :) A.C. ******

Y'know, I can't see how this is getting so many Meh's and such lukewarm response when those absurd seven hour long RPG TASes are getting more positive response and are roughly 10% as interesting.

It's a fast walkthrough. I say "yes"*, it is entertaining to watch. The game appears professionally made: The soundtrack is good, the graphics, while simple, are also stylished, and the controls look good enough to make any playing look fluent and nice to watch. However, is the game supposed to lack antialias? It is somewhat distracting.** *) With reservations regarding the robustness of this TASing platform. **) I do realize I am basing my vote more on the game than on the TAS. Both contribute significantly to the entertaining viewing experience. As there don't seem to be obvious flaws to or anything particularly cunning about the TAS, the game's quality weighs more.

Thanks, guys, for all your hard work for getting encodes with sound! (I believe it's primarily Lex who did most of the encoding work?) Also, congratulations, Nitrogenesis, for once again starting runs on a new system! As for the game, I'm not sure why the reaction has been as negative as it has. It's not a spectacular game, but it has nice action elements and some good variety for its length. The run has precision maneuvers, and everything's done within 5 minutes. This is definitely a more interesting puzzle game than, say, Kwirk (though I do like that game too), which got some pretty good reception back in the day. Nice going, and Yes vote!
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.)
