Experiments with listing movies by platform and game name bought lots of inconsistencies in naming movies to light. Some of those have already been fixed, lots aren't. If I make game names unique, strip all non-alphanumerics from game names, translate uppercase letters to lowercase, the following names are present multiple times: * batmanreturnofthejoker * beavisandbutthead * castlevaniacircleofthemoon * castlevaniarondoofblood * contrathehardcorps * kingsquestquestforthecrown * legendofzeldaocarinaoftime * metroidiireturnofsamus * princeofpersia * simpsonsbartvsthespacemutants * spidermanvsthekingpin * supermarioworld2yoshisisland * tinytoonadventuresbustershiddentreasure Most of those are probably case differences, or ": " vs. " - ". Then there is stuff like "Wario Land 2" vs. "Wario Land II". Oh, I earlier extracted this list of all-obsolete games. Some of these entries are actually legit (such as Air, Pokémon Red and Top Gear) and some have been fixed already (like Mission: Impossible). Some of entries seem to match entries of the above list * Air * Aladdin * Beavis and Butt-Head * Blue Shadow * B.O.B. * Contra - The Hard Corps * Donkey Kong Country 2 * Goonies, The * Hitler no Fukkatsu * Hudson's Adventure Island * King's Quest - Quest for the Crown * Kirby's Avalanche * Kirby Squeak Squad * Legend of Zelda 2 * Lion King * Looney Tunes * Olympus no Tatakai * Pokémon Red * Shinobi 3 - Return of the Ninja Master * Simpsons: Bart Vs. the Space Mutants * Spider-Man vs The Kingpin * Super Mario RPG * Tiny Toon Adventures - Buster's Hidden Treasure * Top Gear Comments?

You can get started fixing them. I'll examine the names and fix them anyway once I finish downloading all the input files (including obsolete). Some time before, I changed a number of published movie names to the US name (ex. Rockman 7 -> Mega Man 7) because of consistency and recognition. By the way: Blue Shadow = Shadow of the Ninja, Hitler no Fukkatsu = Bionic Commando, Olympus no Tatakai = Battle of Olympus

In such cases, we should try to follow the convention as printed on the game's box. Game box images are generally found on Wikipedia for the game in question. Although I would deviate if the box is covered in so much art that you can't make heads or tails out of the proper name. Also beware that for some games, the name of the system or series is in the corner of the box, which led some to mistakenly conclude it as part of the name. Edit: As you can see, it's "Wario Land II".

Note that I am not entirely entirely not sure of these, but I thought I'd just notify you of them: [1313] Saturn Castlevania: Symphony of the Night "Maria mode" by arukAdo in 06:51.22 should be: Saturn Castlevania - Nocturne in the Moonlight [1437] DS Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin by arukAdo & gocha in 10:14.85 should be: Castlevania - Portrait of Ruin [1663] GBA Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced "N. Tropy" by wwmarx in 34:19.83 contradicts it's title in the movie description. The title lacks a colon. Also, these two do have the colon. [1433] PCECD Double Dragon II: The Revenge "2 players" by arukAdo in 11:57.73 should be: Double Dragon II - The Revenge [411] NES The Goonies II by Randil in 16:45.85 should be: Goonies II, The (see here for reference) [429] SNES Prince of Persia by SprintGod in 34:01.65 should be: Prince of Persia [1041] Genesis Robocop vs. the Terminator by Cardboard in 14:06.92 should be: Robocop vs. the Terminator Also, if this isn't the place to post this, please let me know. Then I'll stop doing stupid things. Also, how do you get those lists? Because on this page your changes have not yet showed up. Also, I like saying also.

Thanks, Scepheo. I made all the changes you listed. I also made the following change: Shinobi III – Return of the Ninja Master -> Shinobi III - Return of the Ninja Master The page that you linked only updates when Ilari runs the update script. I edited the movie names through publication edit.

There's a crapload of movies that use – instead of -. Even within the same series. If the latter is preferred, I could list (at least a few of) them. Also, does it help to list the obsoleted versions of movies? Didn't do so last time, but I got way to much time on my hands anyway, so I might as well list those too.

I don't think of any reason why a short dash should be preferred aside from matching a ROM's name. Normally there would be a colon, or at least a long/medium dash.

Wouldn't the game manual generally be the best source for the full title as the developers intended it?

Why "XXX, The" instead of "The XXX"? No way to workaround the sorting problem?
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do

Both of those are wrong. Its Super Noah's 3D Ark.

One particular difficulty is that game name is a property of a movie. That is, to make a change to one game name entails having to edit every movie with that game name. That is also a big underlying cause of inconsistencies. klmz: Correct. There is no way to work around the sorting problem. Everyone else: I'm thinking about the naming system too. But no system is "correct".

If you haven't noticed, I am currently going through name clean-up. This will take a few days. I've looked at the boxart for games where the GameFAQs name differs from the name here, then made a decision based on it. I also referred to a few Wikipedia articles. The main change is dash -> colon. Other changes are as follows: A Boy and His Blob -> Boy and His Blob, A Adventures of Bayou Billy -> Adventures of Bayou Billy, The Aladdin -> Aladdin, Disney's BS Kaizou Choujin Shubibinman Zero -> Kaizou Choujin Shubibinman Zero Battle of Olympus -> Battle of Olympus, The Castle of Illusion -> Castle of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse Castlevania - Nocturne in the Moonlight -> Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night Castlevania 2 – Simon's Quest -> Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Castlevania 3 – Dracula's Curse -> Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse Castlevania the Adventure -> Castlevania Adventure, The Chiki Chiki Machine Mou Race -> Wacky Races Choujin Sentai - Jetman -> Choujin Sentai Jetman Commander Keen 5 -> Commander Keen 5: The Armageddon Machine Daikatana -> Daikatana: John Romero's Digger - The Legend of the Lost City -> Digger Disney's Aladdin -> Aladdin, Disney's DoReMi Fantasy -> Do-Re-Mi Fantasy: Milon no Dokidoki Daibouken Note that I am only up to Donkey Kong Country. Also, the movies list page may not have updated the names yet. If you have any issues, feel free to post here.

I was wondering about that too. In my opinion, using that format is a bad idea. It looks stupid. I know that there are several people who feel the same way, since they seemed to agree with me when this issue was discussed on IRC yesterday.

Sorting is a problem if we want to sort the games by their "main" title (eg. "legend of zelda", "aladdin", "battle of olympus", etc) rather than the preposition ("the", "a"...), company/author name ("Disney's", "American McGee's"...), etc. The standard solution to that is to move the prefix word(s) after the main part. If one would want to keep it in the front but still sort it by the "main" part of the name, it would become complicated. (Basically the only flexible and sureproof way would be to mark the prefix part somehow, so that the comparison function can skip it.) Btw, I oppose the form "Boy and his Blob, A" because in this particular case the "A" preposition is an integral part of the name, and people will search for the game in question in the "A" section of a sorted list, not the "B" section. (Of course one could argue whether "The" belongs to the "main" part of "The Legend of Zelda" or not...)

I also agree with Zeupar and ALAKTORN. "The XXX" should be in the T section. "The" is a word and a legitimate part of the title. Everything I sort starting with "The" is together, including my ROMs, music, and videos. I also agree with Warp's opinion about "A Boy And His Blob".

I also agree with Zeupar, ALAKTORN & Lex. A common problem that is going on is that editors/publishers are using the ROM name rather than the game name. Ive seen this several times that the ROM name was used as the game name. Im sure that these publications are obvious enough to be spotted immediately.

Why remove Digger's subtitle but add subtitles to a ton of other games?
Kato Chan & Ken Chan -> J.J. & Jeff
No. That is very wrong. The Japanese version of the game "Kato and Ken" is far different then J.J & Jeff. Kato and Ken is loaded with potty humour and different graphics. I don't think that you should've changed that.

I still think that things like "Disney's" should be at the end of the name.
