Well, a 1+ hour TAS without read-only mode can be done, but given how desync-prone Dolphin is and how often you have to check for desyncs, I don't know what sane person would. It just takes WAY too long.

do not feel bad about keeping us waiting. i do not have the skills nor the equipment to do any TASing as of yet so i apreeciate the work you are doing. no matter how long it takes, continue doing an awesome job :)

Thanks. I just know that it's a very popular GameCube game and a lot of people have told me directly that they can't wait to see the encode WIPs. I really want to continue the movie, but it's not possible to add on to a movie file from a different revision, so I'll have to wait (as hard as it is to do so) until the fix is done so I can restart (again) and then continue TASing.

I can not believe there is a person who would not rather wait longer and see you finish the game, against you rushing out a WIP for a run that is never finished. Do whatever so long as your having enough fun to do the TAS man. Thats the whole point.

READ ONLY MODE HAS BEEN FIXED WITH DOLPHIN 3.0-223! But only when playing back movies from older revisions. Savestates work perfectly with read-only mode when playing back my 3.0-191 movie, but read-only mode is still mostly broken with movie files created with 3.0-223 itself. So, I'm using rog's idea and recording on 3.0-191, and playing back my movie on 3.0-223 every minute or so when I need to check for desyncs. Now there should be nothing essential missing that should stop me from making this TAS!

I have a question about the end of the run. I know there is a post-play mode after the game that starts right after the credits and "The End" appear (without returning to the title screen). There are a few lines of dialogue and then you can move Mario around, talk to Frankly, etc. Would I need to sit through several minutes of credits so I can close out of the unnecessary dialogue (like EarthBound), or can I end the movie before the credits start and have the encode end when "The End" appears on the screen?

If "The End" appears after the credits, you should be fine with ending the movie early. The problem with Earthbound is, you gain control over Ness right after the credits and have to clear some dialogue in order to get to the "The End" screen.

OK, I've had a few desyncs so I haven't finished the Prologue yet, but I aim to do so in the next few days. Though, I found something weird when I ran through the Goombella's Abilities tutorial on a certain frame: Goomther the Goomba starts walking away, then turns around and exits the screen walking backwards! I have no idea why this happens. I get this result when I play my movie from power-on, so it's not a savestate issue. I'm planning to include this in my movie, since I have to wait for the moving platform in Rogueport Sewers anyway and I find this occurrence entertaining. I really wonder, though, why the game's programming allows this Goomba to do this on certain frames the cutscene starts on. If anyone has any idea why this occurs, I would appreciate you letting me know. EDIT: I'm thinking this is an emulation glitch with 3.0-191. Professor Frankly did the same thing in Rogueport Sewers in my 191 movie, and I haven't been able to replicate either of these turning-around animations on 3.0-305.

Sorry to triple post, but I need some help. I finally got to the first Paper Plane panel and I'm trying to optimally fly to the platform below and walk up to the Thousand-Year Door room. Could someone please help me with the angle and speed of the Paper Plane? I hope to be able to learn from whatever help I get to do more complicated Plane flying later by myself. I would appreciate any help; just post below and I will PM you the movie file and some savestates.

It's been a while since I've played PM:TTYD, so I don't quite remember the physics of the paper airplane offhand. What I suggest you do as a first step is investigate things like the plane's terminal velocity for different angles and how it accelerates when you alter its trajectory just slightly. If its angle of descent changes from 20 degrees to 21 degrees, how long does it take to reach its new terminal velocity? Does it accelerate uniformly? You may eventually be able to deduce the horizontal and vertical components of its velocity as a function of descent angle and time. If there were no friction, the path you should take would be a cycloid.

OK, thank you rog! I wasn't sure which was faster, but on all of my attempts, my goal was just to make it to the platform as early as possible, and I was judging the time I took to fly to the platform by the frame and position I landed. I will remember to press B before landing. EDIT: Thank you for linking to that Wikipedia article, Bobo the King. I don't believe there is any friction when flying the Paper Plane, so the optimal path may very well be a reverse cycloid. Gravity is not realistic in this game though, and neither are the physics when flying upward, but I'll keep trying to find a faster path.

Not sure if it was previously mentioned in the topic, but a Japanese player on YouTube "0Jwn" is making a run as well. He recently uploaded his part 6 (he is already through roughly half of Chapter 2, after he acquires the first set of punies). His playlist can be found here. Maybe you can pick up on a few things he does differently than you do or had planned on doing.

It was previously mentioned, and I watched his part 1 and 2. I haven't watched the other parts, but I don't think his route could be any better than the one Miles posted on the first page (which is pretty much perfect) that I've been using. I'm almost done with the Prologue (following Miles' route), so I'll post an encode in a day or so. EDIT: I was almost finished with the Prologue when I realized I might be able to catch the moving platform in Rogueport Sewers a little quicker by getting a fire flower from the ? box in the Sewers instead of at the Toad Shop. This run will take me a few months to make, so I want to make it as optimized as I can so it won't be obsoleted quickly.

I thought not getting the Fire Flower at the Toad Shop would allow me to catch the moving platform in Rogueport Sewers sooner, and jump to the pipe. However, after testing and being faster by almost 100 frames, I still could not make it. I'm going back to where I was, optimizing flying into the Blooper room. I should finish the Prologue soon.

This looks great! I especially liked how optimized the flying parts looked, compared to the japanese TAS. I can't wait to see more!
Current project: Gex 3 any% Paused: Gex 64 any% There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.

Yes, everything is faster in my TAS than 0Jwn's run. It's pretty annoying how I had spent hours optimizing a area, and he spent almost no time following an obviously unoptimized path. The worst part is that people thought he was actually optimizing everything, and that his route was the fastest. The flying parts I especially worked hard on, and each took me a few hours to make sure it was the fastest I could make it, so I'm glad you enjoyed them. I'm moving on to Chapter 1 now, and I expect to be done in about a month and a half (because of school and homework).

This is awesome! I can tell from watching this Prologue that this run is going to be quite entertaining and FULLY optimized especially from 0Jwn's run. Great stuff, CoolKirby!
