FractalFusion: Judging. McBobX, please explain why you used the J version.
FractalFusion: According to the site rules, switching from U version to J version just because of shorter text is not valid. Apart from the text, this run is essentially the same as Randil's run (except for some stylistic choices), and the author has not mentioned any form of improvement other than the "improvement" of having shorter text.
I'm rejecting the run.
McBobX, please be aware of the types of submissions that we accept on this site. We want to have submissions that are honestly faster (if aiming to beat a publication). We wish not to see submissions that are slower than a publication, or merely faster but only because of things like cheat codes or different versions.

He probably is using the JP rom to shorten the text and reduce the frame count.

How much of that time saved is due to shorter text in the (J) rom? I think that precedent on the site says: 1. Use the (U) rom *in most cases* 2. Shorter text is not a valid reason to use (J) rom A while ago, there was some interest in redoing the Goonies II movie. Time can be saved in certain areas by selective death. (It may change the floating platform timing in your favor, or start you in a spot beyond where you died).

It's also in the site rules. Shorter text in the J rom is not currently a reason to obsolete a run, especially if this run is slower but is faster because of less text (I don't know if this is the case; I haven't watched the run yet). Either way, we need McBobX to answer GeoCorn's question and tell us why he used a different version.

If the sole difference in time is on account of text, then this should be rejected on the basis that the gameplay itself isn't any faster, particularly if (as indicated) it was copied from the previous run of the game.

This makes me have to vote No. You can't just copy Randil's hard work, switch ROM versions, cut out some text scrolling, and call it your run.

I don't think it's all copied. I think the antics on certain platforms were different. That being said, I expected the improvement being larger using the J-ROM.

Improving the current run of a game without reading it's topic - LOLWUT?
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

We already have plenty of runs where death is a shortcut and resetting the game and loading from battery saves time. The site discourages password use because it's taking advantage of outside knowledge, therefore cheating the game. As far as I can tell in the nico video, he resets as soon as the password is on the screen and inputs the same password after the reset. Therefore he gains no unprivileged advantage, and I have no problem with seeing this technique used in an improvement for this game. Voting no on this run because it does not take advantage of known improvement techniques. I could also entertain the argument of creating a "no deaths" category, which the current run embraces.

Using passwords learned during the run was deemed acceptable in some prior run submitted here, though damned if I can remember which one. It basically serves a similar purpose as saving, quitting, and then continuing your game does, for games that don't have save files.

I can agree, minus the password warp technique. I mean using the allotted amount of deaths to your advantage in a game such as this is one thing... it's clever usage that saves time... password use? Just makes a TAS look like crap... and barely superhuman at all. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin
