Hey, everybody!
This is a warpless run! I believe everyone in this site looks for nsmb's warpless run for a long time! And now, it has finished and submitted!
When I watched its any% movie, I had a ambition to make a warpless run. But I didn't have a good route to finish game fast... But WinEpic's "no cannons" run gives me a good route. So I start doing this run with WinEpic.
WinEpic do some stages in this run. And I improved his.

Emulator used

DeSmuME 0.9.7
Be sure Advanced Bus-Level Timing is off before watching.
I choose 0.9.7 instead of 0.9.8. Because 0.9.8 gives me more lag frames on map screen...

Some important Comments

I use corner boosting to make run faster.
1 frame lost in 1-1. To get flower in 1-2.
I use star speed to finish 1-2's first part.
I enter door in 1-tower earlier. To maniplate time at the ending of the stage.
I use fire ball to fight against boss in 1-castle to make him die faster.
Take damage and get a flower later in 2-castle to save time.
I want to tread boss in 2-castle. But it doesn't achieve...
I use flower in 3-1... Sorry, I didn't know its swimming speed can be faster with blue koopa shell when I did this stage...
Waste time to maniplate time in 5-1.
A different route from any% run. To finish world 5 faster.
Jump ahead of screen in 5-tower.
Spend 5 coins to walk a faster way.
Use mini-Mario to enter world 7.
I copy most of any%'s world 8's input.
I waste about 2 seconds in 8-3 to get blue shell. Sorry, I don't know how to manilate hammer bros's item well...

Noxxa: Judging.
Noxxa: While there are some technical mistakes here and there in the movie, this is still a quite nice and entertaining run. Viewer response was generally positive, as well. I think the good things outweigh the bad things here, so despite there being a couple seconds' worth of improvements in this TAS, I'll still accept this run for publication.

How would this run differ from a 100% run?
Clearing all 80 stages, collecting all 240 coins, finding all secret exits, spending all 240 coins. This run is 43 minutes long, my 100% run is 2 hours 26 minutes (SDA timing), if my human run was TAS timed then it would be over 2 hours 30 minutes.

Yep, this category is nothing like 100%, because it skips two (optional) worlds, several levels within the worlds it does do, several exits within the levels it does, and all the star coins that cost time to collect. It's more like an any% that simply plays more levels.

I vote yes, but I am unsure if a 100% run could replace it or not.

If I am understanding the intent of your question correctly; the biggest thing can think of is using mini mario in the world 5 boss fight. (Assuming 100% gets to world 7 using a cannon.)

The reason I ask is because of the way the goal is framed. Any% is "beat the game as fast as possible using any means necessary". 100% is "complete 100% requirements and really show off the entirety of the game". This run, similar to the Ocarina of Time All-Temples run, is wishy-washy "beat the game fast but not the fastest, yet show off the game but not entirely as well". I just don't think it's a category that's necessary. I'd much rather see a highly optimal 100% TAS of this game get published than this semi-optimized category.

I made a rather poor attempt at a counter-argument to the "There should be a 100% run, not this run" earlier on. It basically boils down to: * Yes, a 100% run would be awesome, but we don't have one right now, nor is anyone evidently working on one. * We have this run right now. It's entertaining. In the hypothetical future where we had a 100% run on the workbench, I would probably support that run obsoleting this one. But I see absolutely no reason to reject this run because it's not a different run.

Although, in most of those games, warpless implies all-levels. In 2D Mario games since SMB3, that isn't the case.

I voted yes, and I think this is a good category, very analogous to the current SMB3 warpless movie. The goal is very defined, don't use the cannons, and that simple rule dictates a route that shows a good portion of the game while still allowing interesting and potentially surprising route decisions. I also think this could co-exist with an all coins run (preferably) and maybe a full warpless movie (not preferably). But that is a discussion that should happen if such a movie ever gets made.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

Sorry voting no... It was definitely good for one of your first TASes, and I think it's a great idea for a category, but at the same time it's very improvable. I'm definitely looking forward to an optimized run, though. =)

Voted no based on optimisation; I think it's definitely possible to go faster. I am fine with the category.

Like some other people I agree with the category "warpless" itself. Unnecessary to call it unoptimized again.. After all most of the TASes are improvable. One question though, the pipes on the overworld map to skip certain levels are not considered as warps? Imo a warpless run should not use them and btw I tested it, the 3-A route is indeed faster than 3-1 including the time that goes on unlocking the path.

Hum, I personaly think, using Pipe shortcut is not valid for a warpless... It is just a warp inside the same level.

'warps' is typically used to refer to skipping entire levels or worlds, not taking short cuts (especially not developer-intended ones)
