Deleting topics never serves any good use unless the topic is spam posted by an automated bot. Topics such as this one should be closed rather than deleted so that they can be read through by people who might think the exact same as the one who started this topic.

Wouldn't that make people ignore the text even more? =p Oh, and the first time I ever encountered a TAS, was a friend showing me morimoto's smb3. I didn't know rerecording was possible, and he kept on trying to convince me it was legit, but really, it doesn't take much common sense. I wonder how people's beliefs might have changed if morimoto wasn't Japanese. Also, I can understand if people are confused if they don't know emulation exists and they are ESL. I mean, on the ZSNES forum, people come in every so often and spaz out because they have just discovered emulation. It's pretty funny.

you DO know they are time-attacks right?
Could we please stop using the term time-attack at last? A tool-assisted speedrun is not a time-attack. Just look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_attack to see what a time attack is. It's different from a tool-assisted speedrun. I don't know who first started using this term, perhaps Morimoto himself, but it's just wrong. EDIT: This timeattack/speedrun discussion should be continued at this thread: http://tasvideos.org/forum/t/2349

I refuse to stop using that term! I will keep using that term until everyone uses that term, and then YOU will be the wrong one!

dunno if this is the right forum topic to post this under, but in SMB1 there is a water world that you go to from world 1-2 (methinks), by jumping/ducking & squeezing under some blocks at the end of the underground part, right before the pipe that leads you to the flag. It's been years since i've played but has anyone ever figured out if there's a way out of that water-world? I beat it about 4 or 5 times in a row (without game genie :P), if i remember correctly, but then time runs out.

has anyone ever figured out if there's a way out of that water-world? There's no way out, it just keeps repeating, unless you're playing the fds version in which case there's a -2 and a -3 also. Edit: Hm, interesting, I was just looking at the SMB wikipedia article and it says there's a glitch that lets you escape (and no, this isn't that april fools hoax many of us have seen). Does anyone want to test this out?
In 2005, David Victor Gehrke discovered the only known exit to World -1 thus far. It involves running into both a Blooper enemy character and a red fish enemy character at the same time, near the pipe at the end of the level. If this is achieved, Mario will die and restart at the middle of World 1-2. This feat was witnessed by many, but has not yet been videorecorded.

Heh, but if it takes you to World 1-2, then that wouldn't save you any time... unless you want to consider it part of an "all levels" run. :)

It would still be a really cool trick. I'll try it out soon and see if I can get it to work. Edit: I just tried it out and couldn't get it to work.

I love it! This crazy thread had just died, and then a newby brings up the minus world. I love unexpected plot twists.

I can barely tell what you're saying. You want a site section for non-assisted speedruns (but recorded with emulators)? Those things may be fun inside communities, but they really shouldn't be published or otherwise officially or formally recognised.

If we were going to have a speed run section.. it would have to be sent into bisqwit by video tape.. cause thats the only way it could be official. But then, we can always just send them into TG instead.

Twin Galaxies doesn't host videos. They only keep records (and are therefore very controversial). I suggest you just send your regular speedruns to Radix.

Vatchern's idea is excellent. Why shouldn't we have a speedrun section? I mean, look how big this site has become. Skies the limit Bisqwit... Think about it.

Wasnt there an emulator project with "safe" non-re-recordable or slowdown feature? Which would make it safe to say that no tools were used?

That would be great if there was. My Nintendo (or any that I've found) hasn't worked since 1995 :P
