Hi. This is an improvement of 208 frames over my cancelled submisson.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 1.11.6
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Uses a game restart secuence

Comments

Most of the improvements come from better optimization. I also found that pressing left+right on ladders gives a great speed to the left and you are at max speed directly after letting go of the ladder.

Stage by stage comments

1-1 (1)

I used a different strat to do the ladder glitch at the beggining of the level saving 41 frames. It is possible to clip in the ground with the help of a veggie. I lost back that time to the Birdo frame rule, but I saved 1 frame at the Birdo fight.

1-2 (13)

I saved 1 frame in the first part by jumping on one enemy instead of two. I also saved 11 frames at the Birdo fight.

1-3 (13)

There is no change in this level

3-1 (19)

I had an extra lag frame when restarting the game. I saved 4 frames in the second room by jumping instead of falling. I saved 3 frames in the following room with better subpixel and better potion throwing.

5-1 (26)

Better optimization allowed me to save 7 frames.

5-2 (113)

I saved 6 frames from better optimization up to the Birdo fight where I saved 81 frames.

5-3 (147)

I saved 34 frames from better optimization.

7-1 (202)

I barely made the rocket frame rule which saved a frame. I saved another frame in the following room. Then, using the left+ right trick in the climbing room, I saved 27 frames. Finally, I saved 26 frames at the Birdo fight.

7-2 (208)

Even though I saved 54 frames up to Wart, I am still over a second off the veggie cycle. I still saved 6 frames at Wart. I paused at the last hit to prevent him from moving. The global timer doesn't pause when the game is paused.

Other comments

  • Big thanks to Tompa for pointing me out improvements on my last submisson and for giving me feedback during the making of this TAS.
  • Thanks to masterjun for showing me the strat in 1-1. It adds a lot to the entertainement.

Samsara: Judging.
Samsara: File replaced with an 8 frame improvement at the very end.
Samsara: As I said in the thread, I'm glad you stuck with the movie and pushed down the time further and further with each new submission. Excellent work!
After reviewing the NES and GBA runs, I've determined that this is sufficiently different to stand on its own as another separate publication, so with the much heavier amount of optimization this time around I'm accepting it to Moons.

I found myself laughing at certain parts of the gameplay, so, yes, I found this entertaining. Great job!

Very good work. I'm glad you actually put forth the effort and dedication to come back and improve the movie. As a result, I found the run very entertaining. Voting yes.

User movie #31126714660164186 It's possible to enter the door after Wart 8 frames earlier by getting a running start. We can use this file for the submission with your permission: I'll replace it as soon as you give the word (no co-authorship credit necessary or anything). Everything else looks really clean. Great job sticking with the run over 3 attempts and really pushing it down!

I kinda would have liked it if you wouldn't have completely copied the input of my 1-1 strategy movie without saying a thing, as showing someone a strategy and copying input isn't really the same thing. I mean I'm fine with it, but maybe you should consider asking for permission the next time you do it. (Also it wasn't optimized at all, but I guess that's not too important because of frame rules ?)
Warning: Might glitch to credits I will finish this ACE soon as possible (or will I?)

I'm really amused at how all the different versions of this game have slightly different glitches and strategies. This new 1-1 strat is awesome. Nice going, Masterjun and vince1919!
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

At 3:08 in the YT video, why did you waste so much time to grab the fish if you do nothing with it?

Toad runs much faster when he's carrying an enemy. It more than makes up for the time to grab it.

Much better than before, good job! I noticed some things at the beginning of 7-2 (Picking up the first enemy instead of the second), but it's not enough to make the frame rule anyway.

Shouldn’t Masterjun be co-author?

It's just the first trick in 1-1 that I reproduced his inputs. I tried for a while by myself but I couldn't do it. Guess I should have asked him before using them. I did the rest of the movie. I don't know if he wants co-authorship just for that.

He denied co-authorship, otherwise I would have added him as one while replacing the movie file.

If it’s as Masterjun says and the whole 1-1 input is his then it’s not a matter of agreement, he’s an author at that point. If he doesn’t want to be credited as co-author then vince must redo the input so that Masterjun’s doesn’t make up a whole level. You can’t steal another person’s TAS and say “I’m the author” just because they agree with that. There’s a point where authorship isn’t a matter of feelings and it becomes fact, a whole level of inputs passes that line.

If someone does not want to take credit for a particular piece of input they made, for any reason, then that's their own prerogative. We are not going to force credit on anyone against their will.

It's not the whole level, it's just the trick. The room before and the rest of 1-1 are all my inputs.

The idea, that you can never use the same input someone else already used, doesn't work anyway. If a part of a game is optimized to the frame and you can't make it look different without wasting time, what would you do? Inserting useless input for lagframes just so it can technically be different?
Current project: Gex 3 any% Paused: Gex 64 any% There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.

Wow, you didn’t read shit of what I said did you? I said vince would have to edit the input, not that Masterjun would be credited for it. Holy fuck.

That’s never going to be a problem, ever. There doesn’t exist a game simple enough where only 1 set of inputs is the optimal one. Also, I’m not saying not to fucking trust people. If vince said he redid the input, then you trust him and that’s the end of it unless there’s clear proof he’s lying. Jesus fucking christ I can’t believe I have to explain myself.

No, the input does not have to be edited, and Masterjun does not have to be credited. This submission is fine and no amount of swearing at the staff is going to change it.

I’ve literally explained why in my first post. Can you try reading it? Authorship is not an agreement, it’s a fact. If you made something, you’re that something’s author. That’s how it fucking works, not “Oh but I don’t care about authorship so don’t worry about it”. Read up on the definition of “author” in a dictionary or something.
