This movie improves the previous publication by a whopping 4 frames. The improvement here comes in the first level with a new trick to crash when crossing the the finish line. I did no innovate this trick, I saw it in a realtime speedrun.
The trick saves about 20 frames. And there are some optimizations here and there. However, as typical with modern cores, this game has a lot more lag than with old versions of GENS. Probably. With this game, it is hard to definitively prove anything, as it is laggy, and hard to guage where you are or if you are doing identical routes. But in general, a lot more lag. It's really hard to say, and one of the many frustrations with TASing this game.
This run uses the grid controller options like the previous movie. This is not a style choice. I did attempt an improvement that uses standard controls but they are slow. You gain 43 by not picking this option, but grid controls give you a slight "head start" at the beginning of each level for reasons I cannot determine. This advantage eventually overtakes the extra time needed to pick it, and it turns out it is the optimal choice.
There might be more frames to eek out and I did intend to do so, but I realize I'm not going to come back to this game anytime soon, or ever, due to it generally being unfun to optimize. Finding tricks is fun, optimizing is just frustrating, and so are the grid controls, I truly dislike them.
Not much else to say. 4 frames is 4 frames.

Great to see an update! I'm curious: when we use the normal control scheme RTA you can buffer momentum for the start of the next stage for a while after crossing goal lines, is that also used for the relevant levels here?

I mean, I'm always holding a direction and pressing A. I wasn't sure if it doesn't anything, but I do it anyway.

Too bad this game lags so much (and even more on more accurate emulators), but at least the new level 1 improvement saved this TAS :) Nice work and yes vote.

Huh, the improvement looks so obvious once you see it. Seeing stuff like this always makes me wonder what other seemingly simple tricks and optimizations are being missed out there. Nice work.

Reviewing. So I don't know much about this game, so I wanted to see why certain obvious shortcuts weren't taken, like in level 3 where you could stay on the roof and fall down. Turns out I didn't realize this game had fall damage, so it's better to take a more intended route otherwise you will be sent back earlier in the level. So I noticed some of the IGT for some later levels were slower than the published TAS, and after trying to improve them myself to match the published TAS, I can understand why nobody likes TASing this game. Not only is lag annoying, but this game has some of the most flimsy physics ever. For example on the ramp down in Stage 2, it's faster to get off of it a bit later as you can keep some of your speed. Though you still have to wait for the bridge to drop down, while at the same time deal with lag everywhere from the enemies. when I tried to enter the pipe, I either enter it too late or too early, and making it so I have to add frames just to adjust for this. However, I did manage to save 13 frames on Stage 2 (didn't match IGT of publication), but this causes way more lag in stage 5, completely ruining everything. I couldnt even get that same glitch jump once this starts happening.
