this movie should have the right frame-count/input
recorded with nitsuja's mupen64 rerecording v8 found here: Forum/Topics/2934
16-minute 16-star playthrough of the first and one of the most versatile, action oriented 3-D games for the N64.
This tool-assisted movie is over a minute faster than the original test run, and takes many shortcuts favorable over the original ones. Most of the saved time is an accumulation of bits and pieces of optimization through Mario's movement and straighter paths to whatever destination.
What was very fortunate was that I was able to record with an analog stick, thus making radial positioning much more precise and ultimately making many pathways faster.
Thanks to Micheal Fried, Weatherton, nitsuja, Atma, and GeminiSaint for the useful strategies.
Abuses glitches. Takes damage to save time.
Bisqwit: Updated this submission as well (the movie length was calculated in wrong way).
That looked like it saved some time the 2 or 3 times it was used. I think they were talking about the one where you don't move, though (the "breakdance" move).
That is my #1 favorite TAS! Props to you!!
Quick question (probably a dumb one): How much room do you need to go backwards up stairs? I was thinking (I'm probably wrong) that it might be possible to go backwards up the main staircase. Has anyone tried?
Good luck to future runs of this game. And I would love to see a 120 star run of this game. (that would probably become my favorite run)
Again, good luck to future players!

like nitsuja said, the main staircase is not really a staircase, but a slope with staircase graphics. play a little with it and you'll see for yourself.
Ah, ok. Unfortuanly I don't have a working version of Muppen yet, so i cant play it. I have played it before, but that was a while ago.
Anyways, thanks for the excellent movie.
I never said that every entertaining movie should get a star or that entertainment was the only criteria. I gave a number of reasons. I said it was entertaining, surprising, a new record, and a Super Mario movie, among other things. In other words, there are several criteria which, collectively, require a movie to be exceptional. This movie is exceptional, therefore it gets a star.
TASing or playing back a DOS game? Make sure your files match the archive at RGB Classic Games.
I have a problem! The .avi file bittorrent won't work.
With version 4.1.4 it says it can't find it.
With version 4.2.0 it doesn't say or do anything at all!
i think there might be one opportunity to save a few frames..... when mario gets the very first star he abuses a glitch with a "bomb enemy". before he grabs this enemy, he first bumps into it and then bounces back a bit. i just thought you might be able to avoid bouncing back....
besides that i don't really see any room for improvement, unless there were some stars which would prove to offer a shorter route.
very entertaining run, although i think that game designer who thought that having mario shout "yahoo" every time he jumps was a good idea deserves a serious beating :P
I just can say....
This movie is really cool!
I showed them to friends, and they knows TAS a little.
They said wow, whoo, how he can do that..
Wow, super great, he must really good.
And... exactly 64 votes!

Just noticing that the mip-mapper appears to not be functioning in the movie -- all the textures are the mid-range textures.
This is most noticeable in the hallway to the first boss world: on a real N64, you see the Princess's portrait at long distance, which gradually turns into Bowser's portrait as you reach mid distance.
It's also noticeable in the opening cinema with the letter from the princess: the background of the letter is extremely blocky (it's using the midrange texture instead of the closerange one)
Is this by design?

This has been discussed in the progress thread in the N64 section. It's the plugin's fault, but it's not too big of a deal, so we decided to leave it be.
Just for closure, some of the lighting is also messed up.

Well, I think it's the fault of the way the plugin works on Linux systems. But that's the only plugin that even worked for making an AVI on Linux, so that's what was used.
Looks great!
You know...maybe this should be standard procedure now...
Google video is free and awsome.
But unfortunately, Google Video is not available everywhere. I, at least, always get this:
Thanks for your interest in Google Video.
Currently, the playback feature of Google Video isn't available in your country.
We hope to make this feature available more widely in the future, and we really appreciate your patience.
Archive.org is much better. (And for that matter, who can't use BitTorrent, anyway?)
I'm afraid I disagree with that. Google Video doesn't let you download for offline viewing, archiving, and their Flash based player leaves something to be desired. I'd much rather have an actual AVI to watch.
It is somewhat standard procedure for some movies to make their way to archive.org for direct HTTP downloads.Speaking of which, we have a lot of stuff that might be worth uploading...
Well, I am not saying Google video would replace the AVI, but rather it would just be another means to get the content.
The beauty of it is, the bandwidth is free!

For what it's worth, I can't use bittorrent at all (too many proxies on the ISP's side of things I guess), and the archive.org videos are nice to have available. People on public computers would probably also have difficulty.
A little off-topic, it would be great if all the videos with a star could be high priority for getting onto archive.org. It would be nice for first-time viewers, anyway, who might not want to get bittorrent just to see a TAS. Who usually uploads the movies to archive.org?
