Luigi has always been a beloved character in Super Mario Bros. series. However, in this game - Super Mario Bros. 2(J) (also his first time appearing as an independent character), his performance was really poor. His higher jumping ability was rarely utilized, and the huge inertia and worse acceleration ability made few speedrunners attempt him.
Of course, we couldn't ignore Luigi. Once I watched Mario's 'all levels' movie, I knew it was time for Luigi to embark on a long journey. Our goal is to use Luigi to complete all 52 levels (World 1-9 and A-D, requiring the game ROM that has been successfully played through at least 7 times) as quickly as possible. Some of the levels are quite difficult because Luigi's poor attributes even affect his ability to use those glitch techniques. However, I do my best to enable him to perform the actions that Mario can do, and enhance the entertainment value at the same time.

Highlights

Since there are already the warps movies (Worlds 1-8 by HappyLee and KFCMARIO, Worlds A-D by electricpants ), the same techniques will not be described again.

2-1

The Flag Despawn, since all five enemy slots are filled up, saves 21 frames.

5-2

The Wrong-Warps, the inverted pipes in this game can be accessed, saves 84 frames by skipping the cutscene.

6-1

The FFPG by the wind which has been used in Mario runs, but only saves 21 frames for Luigi.

6-4

In order to jump through two long firebars and get the appropriate Bowser mode, I have to slow down slightly. Fortunately, there was no loss of frame rule.

8-1

The second Wrong-Warps, it can only be used in warpless runs.

A-3

The third FFPG (the second is A-1) by the Koopa. It took me really long time because Luigi jumps too high so that he needs to step on the Koopa low enough. Eventually, I managed to do it using the spring. Maybe there's a faster way. Additionally, due to the interference from the Cheep-Cheeps, I had to slightly slow down to make adjustments.

B-2

In a specific place, clipping into the top block can swim through it without slowing down. It can also be done in 3-2 if the Blooper was not in my way.

C-1

The third Wrong-Warps, similar to the 5-2 and 8-1, but this saves the most time.

Acknowledgments

This is my first TAS, and perhaps it can still be improved. Anyway, thanks to HappyLee, KFCMARIO and electricpants for their warps movie, to alexyweb and Kzwbz for their Mario all levels run. At last, thank you for watching.

nymx: Claiming for judging.
nymx: Replacing with a 24 frame improvement.
nymx: Uploading a corrected version.
nymx: Well, this turned out to be a challenging one, but I’m glad I took it on. I learned a lot about SRAM and Mario speedrunning along the way.
First: welcome, JQJ, to our community. You chose a great game and put together a strong speedrun submission. It’s especially nice to see a first submission with this level of effort—often new introductions don’t have the same quality, but this one clearly does.
Second: we ran into issues with your input file. I reached out to DrD2k9 to confirm whether he’d hit the same problem, and he did. I then brought it to our Senior Judge, ikuyo, and we ran into another hurdle. Ultimately, we received a strategy from CasualPokePlayer: your input file needed to be handled as part of another SMB2 run that requires the same SRAM verification. Once that approach was used, everything worked. From there, I reconstructed the movie using that plan, and we now have a version suitable for review.
Finally: regarding the run itself—because we already have multiple SMB2 runs published, I needed to ensure this submission matched the standard of those publications. At first, I wasn’t fully confident. After comparing your run side-by-side with the [6280] FDS Super Mario Bros. 2 "all levels, Mario" by alexyweb & Kzwbz in 35:01.606 run, I noticed a few details that weren’t immediately clear. I then compared related publications, specifically [3348] FDS Super Mario Bros. 2 "warps, Mario" by HappyLee in 08:04.83 and [2210] FDS Super Mario Bros. 2 "warps, Luigi" by HappyLee & KFCMARIO in 08:13.77, both associated with HappyLee, whom I trust as the most experienced TASer for SMB-related games.
To help quantify the difference between the Mario and Luigi behavior, I calculated the latency comparison:
For reference, I did the following with your run, against the same comparable publication:
These results are close enough that I don’t see anything obviously off. Audience feedback hasn’t flagged any issues either. The run looks solid to me, and I’m happy to say congratulations on filling in the missing run!
Accepted as “Standard.”

And it seems that because I didn't add the suffix of the game ROM in the first submission, the game platform was identified as NES instead of FDS. Please help me revise it, thank you.

my only question is if fast accels work as luigi, aside from that, this is very good, specially for a first TAS

unfortunately, fast accel doesn't work for Luigi as he accelerates similarly in both direction

Apart from what NotThinkAnything2008 said, I can add more. In the All-Star version, Luigi's acceleration ability has been optimized. However, in the FDS version, it is even worse. He cannot gain running speed after leaving the pipe and before dropping the pipe, which can be observed in many levels, such as 1-2, 3-2, 5-3, etc. In C-1, after the Wrong-Wrap, due to being too close to the flagpole, I found that I couldn't even complete the FPG. One exception is the fourth room of 8-4: due to the long jump distance at the beginning, it is possible to save time by walking to the left and then turning back to reach the running speed, as this has already been seen in the warps run.

Just a heads up...this file desynced. Can you confirm?
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX

Emmm...I just tested it on my computer and it seemed to be fine. Since this is my first submission, I'm not sure what "desynced" means and why it's like this. I'm sorry. But I still need to emphasize that it does not start from the initial state of the game. Instead, a ROM that has been successfully played through 7 times is required to enter the A-D world, just like what has been used in many other submissions.

Ok. It's been a while since I have picked up a SMB2 run. I had forgotten about that. I will give it another try. Thanks.

We are having trouble with that updated file you sent. I've asked another person to confirm and it is not working. Can you upload, to the user files, an updated version...or maybe the original one?

Hey, I am having issues getting this movie to sync. I expected it to need a verification file, in the same vein as #9380: alexyweb & Kzwbz's FDS Super Mario Bros. 2 "all levels, Mario" in 35:01.606, but the provided improvement file does not include the necessary saveram. How am I meant to get it to play back?

The situation is that I used a special ROM during making this TAS. I didn't notice the difference between it and the verification movie, and I guess I didn't know how to correctly save SaveRAM. I'm very sorry for causing these troubles. When I didn't know how to correct it, CasualPokePlayer added the correct SaveRAM above. Thank you very much for the help. If there are any other problems, I will do my best to address them, and I can upload my other files.

No problem at all. It appears to be all good on our end now. I'll take another look and pass final judgement here in the next day or so.
