The whole reason that "deleting the save" etc. works is because of programming oversights.

So, you are opposed to using programming glitches?

Speedrunning is a hobby. I like following said hobby. I like discussing things pertaining that hobby. Can we discuss the hobby and forget about whose nickname happens to be marked as the author of the post?
Discussing the hobby is all well and good, but the point of a forum discussion is also to discuss the points made, in their relevant contexts. In this case, "I have started noticing a trend in speedrunning techniques that I really don't like." is the thesis of the original post, and people seem to be responding to that to further the discussion. To that end, the post's author is relevant, as the thesis is a pair of "I" statements. And, in response to those "I" statements, my impression of the situation, based on your posts in this thread and in other threads is that you are resistant to the changing landscape of the hobby that you follow. Which is a very valid standpoint. However, you are one voice against the tide of change, and to that end, you are being drowned out by people who like the change, or who at least accept it. To an extent, I can agree with your points about not wanting the landscape of speedrunning (and TASing) to change too much from "actually playing the game." With that said, I do like watching the ACE runs and the major glitches because they show what the programming allows (that was not intended by the developer), and as a programmer myself, I am reminded to watch out for these things in my own programming. Consider, for example, the very common L+R input. Because I have seen so many games where L+R has unintended consequences, I am more aware of opposing inputs being input simultaneously, and will be aiming to avoid that in my own code. Many games also include walls where the textures line up but the hitboxes do not, leading to unintended skipping or other interesting consequences, and if I enter the world of 3D gaming, this is something I will be aware of. In the long run (pun somewhat intended), if I am presented with a speedrun that is basically a longplay with knowledge, and a speedrun that uses actual speed techniques (glitches, strange code interactions, etc.), I am far more likely to watch the latter, because I can experience the former by playing the game myself and gain more enjoyment.

It's because the site clearly disagrees with what you consider "legitimate game completion", as there are several ACE and glitch runs that complete the game within a few seconds of power on. That thing you were specifically complaining about that I quoted.

Now look at ais523's response to that point. And there's also the matter of needing to find a game that's publicly available so that AGDQ doesn't get into trouble, and the host of legal issues surrounding that, and you will quickly see why dwangoAC searches for games that /can/ be played at the marathon.

And, on that note, this discussion has run its course. In the future, if someone has an issue with a staff member, contact the lead member of that branch of staff, and not adelikat directly.

"Pretty much it" does not describe the specifics of the situation, nor allow any sort of actual discussion of the events that transpired. It's impossible to establish precedent on hand-wavy ignorance of hard facts. Because you continue to refuse to provide any concrete information, I am making this my final post in this thread, unless moderation is needed.

You're asking for consequences in the form of site policy, based on circumstantial nothing and general displeasure. That isn't likely to happen.

I am willing to agree with you --in general-- that when you approach someone, they shouldn't respond with insults. --In general.-- In specific, if the person who is addressing me has repeatedly been negative, or condescending, or dismissive, or insulting, and is now complaining that someone is being mean to them, I am likely to tell that person --in specific-- to grow a pair. In the situation you are describing, let me just be absolutely clear that I have the chain of events down: 1) A staff member, not acting in a staff capacity, says something that you take offense to. 2) You reach out to the site's primary administrator (who shall remain nameless), who tells you to stuff it, because that person wasn't acting in a staff capacity. 3) The site's primary administrator --has a conversation with the person you are complaining about, about their actions and your own-- and you are getting upset about this. I've come across this before, where people seem to believe that other people shouldn't have conversations about things that have happened, and I find the issue laughable at best. Of course people are going to talk about things. You did a thing, someone else passed that information along. That happens. Live with it. There is nothing objectionable about this act. 4) You received a taunting message from the staff member whose action you found objectionable in the first place. I would agree that this is questionable behaviour, and the sort of thing that should be brought to a moderator or higher, as something that needs moderating. 5) You continued to complain to the original primary administrator, who has dismissed you previously, in what you call "formal and polite", and that person has ignored you. Which you find objectionable. Now, under normal circumstances, I /might/ agree with you. But, as you may be aware, it is the end of December. A time commonly referred to (in many circles) as Christmastime. A time where people spend most of their waking hours with friends and family, celebrating the thing that happens in a few hours: the new year. I would posit that people (including the site's primary adminstrator) are busy, and likely aren't spending too much time reading forum posts and wanting to deal with quibbles on an internet forum. There are much more important things to be doing. 6) Again, you return to asking for professionalism and diplomacy, but you seem to be ignoring the professionalism and diplomacy you are receiving in this very thread by site moderators and staff, while trying to figure out how to start handling your very real and important issue. As has been asked several times above, and immediately above by Mothrayas specifically, please give us something to start with, instead of continuing this thread with vague hintings at details.

Is this official policy? If someone "derails threads to the point of being locked", then that person is free to be insulted by staff members, and his formal complaints to the primary administrator ignored?
No, the unofficial policy is closer to, "If someone derails threads to the point of being locked, we warn the user, and then progressively get closer to (temporarily) banning them.

So let me ask once again: Should it be acceptable for staff members, when acting within the site, to be hostile towards visitors and insult them?
That depends entirely on what you mean by "visitor". Someone who has a couple of posts, but has lurked around for a while, and hasn't made any waves, asking a question of an administrator and being shot down? Probably not a good decision, PR-wise. Someone who has been around for a while, and has been a constant nuisance complaining that someone is annoying them? Maybe dismissed.
Warp wrote:
Is it ok for the primary administrator to mishandle and dismiss formal complaints about staff members, and to just outright ignore such formal messages sent to him?
Is it okay for the person writing the "formal" messages to be a disruptive influence to the community on a regular basis, stepping gingerly on the line between outright troll and passive nuisance? Again, what your question lacks is context, the thing that previous posts have asked for.
Warp wrote:
Would you be willing to write that explicitly into the site rules? If not, then perhaps a revision in attitudes ought to be in place. Especially since tasvideos.org is a relatively reputable and well-known site.
To write what? That people who behave poorly might not receive the nicest responses from site staff? I thought that was implied in any community.

What you deem 'reasonable' and what others deem 'reasonable' seem to be at odds with one another, for example, the thread that ars4326 is referencing. Again, while providing as little detail as possible, this seems more like a one-sided airing of frustration (and vaguebooking) and not hoping for actual discussion. (As for personally hating you, I don't, but you certainly aren't endearing yourself to me either.)

Is there a forum equivalent to vaguebooking? Because the original post reads a lot like vaguebooking. As a forum moderator who has tried (once) to reach out to you in an attempt at moderation, only to receive vitriol in response, I am not terribly surprised that anyone in a position of authority here would take your complaints with a grain of salt, or to start from a position of relative dismissal. I would strongly suggest that you change your attitude toward the fora in general if you want the staff to change their attitude toward you.

I loved watching this and you have my yes vote. One question though, at ~3:11 in the YouTube encode, can you not walljump up the left-hand wall instead of taking the moving platform back to the right? Would that be faster than the current path through that room? (I don't know if those columns actually exist, or if they're foreground stuff, or what.)

Disclaimer: I am not an encoder. With regard to the second half of your problem (Hourglass not working on Windows 8.1), I believe the current trick is to install a Windows XP virtual machine and run Hourglass through that. Something like this (http://www.howtogeek.com/171395/how-to-get-windows-xp-mode-on-windows-8/) should help you setting up such a VM.

Regarding jlun's 2, seeing as in 34 minutes, somewhere between 100 and 200 enemies were defeated, I don't see the point in dragging things out for 750 enemies. I enjoyed the pace of this run, and if someone were to 100% this in an interesting way (which probably includes a non-repetitive, non-boring way to kill 750 enemies) I'd probably enjoy that too, but it is not a dealbreaker for this run.

This does feel a lot like a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation, because once the zipless version gets accepted, then the zip version is faster, completing the same major goal (no rings). :|

I don't have access to Tetris Worlds at the moment, so I can't directly test this, but just to clarify, when you are looking at one-byte addresses, are you adding entries for each of the four bytes that you are looking at, or just retaining that list?

Lancet, BizHawk frequently gets upgraded to be better and less intensive on peoples' machines. If the last version you tried was < 1.11.x, you might want to consider upgrading and trying again. If not, you might be stuck using your subpar emulator that doesn't want to pay attention to your input.
