The different damage strategies by every team would probably mess that up.

I notice there's not a whole lot of consistency in battle strategies, with some battles being quite a bit slower than other ones when it seems like more consistency could lead to faster times.
  • In the first battle (Beach, vs. Jerry), you hit Jerry with a thrown crab object while he's still invincible, to no effect. You also don't prevent him from picking up a few health kits and running away, which wastes further time. Was this really not avoidable?
  • The fight against Spike looked pretty efficient. You do one body slam which did a lot of damage but no stun (thus no lengthy invincibility time), and used a throw that does a lot of damage and also doesn't have a lengthy invincibility time afterwards. Couldn't some of these strategies be implemented in other stages as well?
  • Vs. Tyke: judging from the healthbar, going to berserk mode only loses time because it holds up Tom for a few seconds, and you'd defeat him in four hits anyway.
  • Vs. Nibbles: Again there's a body slam without the stun, significantly speeding up the fight.
  • Vs. Monster Jerry: After going berserk, you hit him with a body slam which leaves him at very low health with long invincibility. You did one jab right before going berserk; if you did one more it would probably have saved several seconds.
Overall I think there's too little consistency and too many opportunities improvement for this run. You should try looking into how to get body slams that don't stun the opponent (like in the Spike and Nibbles) battles, as tactics like that look like they could improve the run by a lot of time. Otherwise, you may want to look into other methods of dealing damage, that don't cause such long invincibility times. Hand-to-hand weapons, regular thrown items, throws or even just jabs come to mind.

I might as well start doing that now, in order to better keep track of things. As of now, over half of the teams have already submitted (at least once). EDIT: All teams have submitted now.

A final reminder for the DTC5 teams: submission is due Saturday of next week! You have a bit over a week left to finish your TASes. Remember to read the TAS Movie Rules in the first post for information on the ways you can submit your movies. (Really though, just do whatever you want as long as I receive at least one valid movie, and do so in time. The rules are just formalities.) Tips for submission: Make sure you know what Saturday 23:59 UTC translates to in your local timezone, so that you don't end up being inadvertently late. For that matter, just try to ensure to get your submission in early, well in advance of the deadline. There's no need to risk being late unless you really have some work to do still. Also remember that you can resubmit as often as needed, with the last version before the deadline counting.

Uncancelling is something you can do yourself, since you were the one who cancelled it in the first place. As for re-accepting, sure, I guess - considering it already has been accepted to Vault once before, and it does look like it still fulfills the minimum criteria for the Vault. A judge will still need to take a look at it though.

Congratulations to Masterjun for winning TAS of 2014, counting up to a record total of 6 awards in one year, and immediately dethroning adelikat for highest overall award count with a total of 11 awards, beating adelikat's 10 awards. TAS of the year was a tight vote this year - Super Mario World won with only 17% of votes overall (in a field of 10 candidates), a record low. 2014 has had a lot of highly regarded runs.

Upload a video of the run being played back on console to YouTube. Then we can put the link in the publication description and mark it as console verified.

There are many worthy runs this year. In fact, all 10 candidates are very strong runs in their own rights. I ended up voting for 7 of them, although I could just as easily voted for 9 or 10 of them (even though 10 would be useless for the votes overall, and 9 seems more like having a bias against one particular run). I do have to say that one slightly jumps out above the others in my opinion, and that is the Spyro: Year of the Dragon run. It managed to keep up its great level of excellence and entertainment all throughout its two-and-a-half hour length without ever getting boring. It's something amazing.

When I discovered this game (thanks Raiscan) I immediately was pressured to knew that I had to TAS it (thanks Spikestuff). This game is a platformer, with the unique gimmick of the protagonist David Beckham having a football which he can kick around in various ways in order to defeat enemies, collect items, and finish stages. It's also a decently fast paced game (after speed is upgraded during the second trial stage, at least) and the ball allows for all kinds of inventive moves and tricks to get past enemies. The first WIP clears the three Trial stages (effectively, the tutorial). Link to video User movie #20074050755214679 A few notes:
  • Ground speed and air speed are normally equal, but after running on the ground for a while, Beckham starts to sprint, moving a bit faster. Thus, ground movement generally beats out air movement, at least for long ground sections. Annoyingly, this reduces a lot of playaround variety at times.
  • During the trials you are stopped a lot due to dialogue from guide/mentor Micky. Normally this stops Beckham in place, but by pausing right before hitting the dialogue trigger, it's possible to keep moving while the dialogue goes on.

dwangoAC organized a similar competition a few months back: Thread #15743: Speed TAS'ing competition: Make a TAS with a time limit!. It was a speed-TASing competition where the runners were given 2 hours to create a short TAS. If you want to look further at larger TAS competitions, there's currently a Dream Team Contest going on where several teams of 3 TASers are challenged to TAS one game over the course of several weeks. Additionally, there are a few games that have competitions of their own. Super Mario 64 comes to mind. Just saying this to provide you with a few resources or examples to look at.

Whose TASes do you intend to stream? Your own TASes? TASes from people who sent them to you? Also, will you tell which games the TASes will be of?

As to what would make an acceptable category for an endless game like this - I'd be more inclined to think of a "maximum score" run to be the best way to run it, in the same vein as other endless games like Tetris. While the game's distance counter technically does not stop, it does have a maximum distance accounted for by the game, at 99999m. It would take much longer than this short run, so one would have to see if entertainment can be kept up over the course of the run. If it does, it would be great.
A score-based ending point doesn't fit into Vault (like I was told with insistence), even if it's a real point where the game ends.
For the Seaquest run, the primary issue for me was the branch of the run being one that violated Vault rules. This run does not have any branch associated to it. Also what I put in the Seaquest topic:

I'm a bit on the fence about it - as I said, I find the "ending point" somewhat dubious, but it seems a fair amount of people agree it's a valid ending point. If enough people agree about the ending point, I suppose it can be put back to Vault without branch name.
For this game, I consider there to be a general consensus about the ending point, and the developer of the game himself explicitly said the five-digit border was the highest distance point that he accounted for, which makes it a valid ending point in my eyes. As for Seaquest, after I made the above post you had a debate with Nach and adelikat and some others about the ending point. I don't know what has come of that, if anything.

You know feos, after looking at most of the response feedback on here, it's clear that a shorter run would be the most entertaining choice. Personally, I also thought that the novelty started to run thin, after about the 3-5 minute mark. I think a shorter run would make the Moon tier, easy. And, going by the prior judgment, entertainment value in my view unfortunately diminishes over the course of the run. If it's possible to continue the dialogue about establishing some kind of arbitrary goal branch for Moons, I'd be all for it!
The problem is that there is no established ending point that I know of for any shorter run to be considered a legit category. "Fastest crash" didn't count.

Can I mention that the time frame for this DTC was a terrible, terrible idea? What with AGDQ and all the other stuff going on this month.
AGDQ was one week long. This contest is roughly 10 weeks long. I can understand AGDQ and such taking off some working time, but I still based the time frame on making sure there was plenty of time to work with. My initial time frame idea for this contest was 6-7 weeks, so the contestants already have nearly a month's worth of extension to compensate. (And Masterjun, who had been doing a lot of AGDQ work both prior and during AGDQ, actually mentioned to me that he liked the time pressure AGDQ added to his DTC work). And yes, I can agree the timing of the contest is not ideal, but at the time I started laying out the groundwork for the contest, it was in a sort of 'now or never' situation where if I didn't do it right then, there wouldn't be any DTC in the foreseeable future, as nobody would host it or even think about it anymore.
