We can still use adelikat's idea, which I'm very much in favor of, to counter inflation problem with the ratings regardless of the workbench voting.

If the final boss is made faster, then all the better, heh. Possible improvements to this run: 1) getting Compass (would have saved 7–15 seconds depending on the level it's found on); 2) not getting a dark level (would have saved 3–4 seconds); 3) getting jetpack in level 1 (would have saved 2–4 seconds); 4) better boss fight (probably about 6–9 seconds); 5) better level layout — I'd rate mine with 8.5 out of 10 (10+ seconds). In total, practical limit for this game seems to be at around 3:10–3:20. I MAY try it again, but not earlier than I finish a low% run and Derek finishes 1.0.

Guys, you won't believe me. :) I just finished an any% in 3:53! Everything went almost perfectly, I didn't get the compass, but had awesome level layouts in most cases. Enjoy!

You probably mean this run. In my attempts I've been reaching area 3 in under 3 minutes, so it should be pretty easy to go sub-6 minutes low%.

Ok, I decided to do some low% speedruns, but one of them resulted in a 4:32 any%. I recorded it just in case, but I think I'll be able to push the time further (I had a lame boss fight, only got Jetpack on stage 5, and had no scepter). Goals for sub-4:30 speedrun are following. Items. 1. Getting Jetpack before area 2. 2. Getting Compass and Shotgun before area 3. Time. Area 1 — under 0:50 (best was 0:32, has to be very lucky without items). Area 2 — under 1:55 (best was 1:32). Area 3 — under 2:25 (best was 2:09). Area 4 — under 3:00 (best was 2:53). The first run under 4:30 will be uploaded for viewing pleasure. :) [EDIT] Just had another run, 4:35. Finished area 3 in 2:09 without Compass, wow. [EDIT2] Edited with new best times for future reference.

You can also trigger arrow traps that are above you when you're on a ladder, but that requires pixel precision, and takes more time than is feasible in a speedrun. I've very satisfied with the result, though. I could probably try to push it under 4:30, but gambling for jetpack in the first two levels is a pain I'd rather do without.

Just got 6:31 with AWFUL luck. I lost a shotgun when flipping over the ledge in caves, a jetpack was lost to an explosion, had only 4 bombs at the boss, and my only items were climbing gloves and spring shoes. I'm fairly confident I can push it sub-5.

Highness likely refers to this passage. Now of course it's your choice whether to shoot more than necessary, but don't complain if it seems sloppy.

Don't forget that this site provides entertaining videos for all people, not only to those that have played the games featured on it. 1. Why do you so adamantly dismiss Highness's opinion on the run even if he hasn't played the game? Does that mean he can't spot obvious mistakes that you even admit to have made? 2. If there are so many improvements that you know yourself, why not implement them first and then submit?

Why are you getting so defensive?.. When you publicize your work, you are bound to open it to others' criticism. While you could use the advice to improve it, you're basically saying "I know it's improvable, and you have no right to tell that to me".

I recorded a failed sub-5:30 speedrun attempt where I miserably died on the last boss. I'll upload another one when I hit sub-5 and complete the game in the same run.

Most of the criticism I expressed in one of your previous submissions can be applied to this WIP. Namely, repetitive combos, repetitive fighting strategies, too much Shang Tsung, etc.. Noob vs. Rain fight was an interesting idea, but both rounds were pretty much identical. I suggest watching this run a few times. Note how it keeps the variety of action without concentrating on 100% combos.

Alright, I'm done! A sub-10 minute speedrun goal has been accomplished! Would have improved upon your time, Kuwaga, had I not been so cautious at the last boss, which killed me the previous time. I was lucky enough to meet an alien in the caves, so I had a free jetpack for the rest of the game.

One of the best examples of single-channel pseudo-polyphony is 1_channel_moog.it (explanatory video).

If I understand eternalwjh's point correctly, he means this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triangle#Basic_facts. "The sum of the lengths of any two sides of a triangle always exceeds the length of the third side, a principle known as the triangle inequality." This is very basic geometry, mind you.

It may be unrelated, but, much as with MAME, some ROM versions may not match some emulator versions. The only way to make sure is to get the latest version of the emulator and the latest versions of the ROMs.

Any codec will perform poorly for music when below 8 kbps. Not like quality is the goal, either.

Audio codecs like Speex can supposedly go even lower, but they won't be supported by players. Musepack can theoretically do 3 kbps (practically, it only uses so much for digital silence). Don't remember about Vorbis, but it lkely can do so as well.

Well, let's count things that (are supposed to) damage you in the NBMB run. 1. Various enemies. Bypassed by killing them beforehand, or jumping/jumpmorphing over. Slow. 2. Spiked room in Brinstar. Bypassed by waiting for a start screen cutscene to load this room in memory. Takes a long time. 3. Pre-X-ray room. Bypassed by horizontal bombjumping through the entire room (slooow), or taking a huge detour to get Varia (to avoid damage in Norfair), and Grapple/Ice beam (to avoid bombjumping). Lots of enemies on the way, so avoiding them will take time. 4. Big Metroid. The ways to bypass it are known, some of them don't even require tool-assistance. 5. Rinka in MB's room. This one might be difficult, because I haven't confirmed if it's possible to shoot it down without touching it. So it will be for the most part like the NBMB run without things that make it, well, fast.

It was considered at several points, but it will naturally be very slow, because Super Metroid benefits from damage boosting like nearly no other game does. It could be done for completeness's sake, but it won't be remotely as entertaining as a normal run because avoiding damage is not hard nor impressive in this game.

It's most likely not, just as any other torrent of an obsoleted movie. You have two options: watch the key input file on an emulator, or watch it online following the link on that page (where it says "watch online").
