About the game

Romancing SaGa 3 is the 6th title in the SaGa console role-playing game series developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) and released exclusively for the Super Famicom system in Japan. It was also the third and final SaGa title to be released for the Super Famicom. It has also been available on the Wii Virtual Console Arcade in Japan since September 21, 2010.
The gameplay is similar to other console RPGs of the era, but with several notable differences. For example, instead of 'level ups', character stats increase individually depending on their participation in a battle. Also, a character has a certain amount of 'LP', which decreases when the character's HP is reduced below zero or when they are hit while their HP remains at zero. If the LP of a character is zero, they are removed from the party, but they can be recruited again with the exception of the main character of the current game, once the main character reaches zero LP, it results in an automatic game over.
During battle, characters can learn ("spark") new techniques which often turn the battle in their favor; the same goes for gaining the ability to evade certain enemy attacks. There is also a Commander mode, which requires at least one character more than the lead character, with the lead character on the back lines, out of the battle. If the player has less than a full party of 6 he or she may use one person smaller formations (i.e. using a four-person formation with a party of five so the main character can direct in Commander mode.) During Commander mode, techniques that involve multiple characters can be learned, depending on the formation.

About the glitch

  • The Materialization Bug
The preparations are necessary to cause this bug.
  1. Put specific equipment on the top of the item list.
  2. Make Robin(Lime) a companion even once.
  3. Adjust the party member to two people or more.
  4. Adjust all member's LP to 1.
When the preparations are completed, fight with Yon-ma-kizoku. And, receive the entire attack and be annihilated.
Then, the character becomes invisibility. (state where party member doesn't exist either)
At this state, open the screen in the shop or the warehouse once.
After that, encounter Maco of the west forest. Then, the screen becomes a tournament mode. Run away at once.
when succeeding, The character, the items, and the map, etc. change.
The result of the change is decided depending on the kind and the number of items put on top of the item list.
You can go into the last dungeon from "Dry large river" that appears only in this method.

I hope you enjoy my run.

Critical_five: added video module.

mmbossman: I will be judging this once more information regarding the glitch is made available (and information regarding the version of SNES9x used, because I can't get it to sync with 1.43 v13 (.05 lua). Good viewer response and a nice short RPG. Accepting for publication.
GabCM: I'll use Critical Five's encode for publishing.

Why are there two videos of this game, one 40 minutes faster than the other?

Are you referencing this other submission? If so, that's SaGa 2 vs. SaGa 3 for SNES. Having said that there's very little context between these four submissions. I'm hoping someone can post a bit more history on them as it's very interesting to see all four of them submitted at the same time... A.C. ******

The first half was Meh, the second half was Hahahahaha YES!. I did not see that coming. To anyone that thought this was a bad idea, don't watch this movie! Not encoding because I don't have enough Hard Drive space.

I'm totally at a loss on this, because these are clearly not troll submissions... they are extremely well done, (at least the GB ones) surprising glitch runs. I wish the author would fill in way more information, so we know what is going on!

Encoding in SD, and maybe in HQ (but not HD) if it works for me. By the way, the run synched with snes9x-1.43 As for the run itself, the part beginning at around 16:56.67 was really worth seeing! It also seemed optimized, and the graphics and sounds were cool. Yes vote But please, knbnitkr, for your next submission, add content to the submission text beforehand. Edit: SD encoding done Dailymotion MediaFire Archive.org

I'd like to judge this, but would appreciate some further explanation by the author on the glitches and gameplay mechanics before I make my decision. Until then, I'll set this to "Judging underway", and wait patiently for some more information.

The author has been surprisingly silent on this movie, as well as all of his other submissions. I'll give this a look sometime in the next few days, but would continue to appreciate more information regarding the glitch(es) used.

I can't verify that this works. My checksum matches, but it doesn't sync using SNES 1.43 v13 (lua .05). Anyone have the exact version of the emu that this synced with?

Around 14,600th frame? It happened to me, too. I downloaded the smv again, then it synchronized perfectly. It's odd. About the glitch: Maybe knbnitkr will explain someday, but he seems to be busy at work. His encodes on nicovideo explain glitches perfectly, but the language is Japanese. :P I’ll complement the glitch shortly. When LP (Life Point) is down to zero, the character disappears forever. When all the party is defeated, the game will be over. But when you are defeated at an Abyss Gate Guardian Battle at the same time all the characters’ LPs are down to zero, you will be an invisible person and then you can do various things. This is the glitch. BTW, you may take the number of re-recording counts for small, but he researched the best RNGs according to the last part of his encode and also made a test run available on nicovideo. Fortunately, there is a translation patch unlike RS1 and 2 (Romancing SaGa 1 and 2) and the time for setting up the glitch is shorter than that in RS2. I used to be immersed in playing this RS series. I wished these games had had been officially released overseas. I took several screenshots in this run which I thought funny. I still cannot get this to sync. I have tried downloading the .smv again, and tried both 1.0 and 1.1 of the ROM. And with umpteen million versions of SNES9x, I'm not about to try and hunt down the exact version that the author used, since he's been missing in action since submitting. I'm setting this to "Needs more info" for the time being.

Thanks finalserafin! I haven't updated my copy of SNES9x for quite some time, it appears. I'll check to see if it syncs with an updated emulator when I get home. And thanks to the author for updating his submission text with some more information, it's very helpful.

knbnitkr + SaGa = awesome too bad the awesome train stops here since all of the other sagas have been done, except the other storylines from saga frontier can't really do sf2 or unlimited saga / romancing saga for ps2 still, thank you for the SaGa movies!
