Hello! This is a TAS of the game Puggsy for the Genesis. Enjoy!
Goals:
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Abuses Glitches
  • Manipulates Luck
  • Makes me Genesis TASer of 2011
This is a 29397 frame (08:09.95) improvement over the previous submission. Just watch and find out how I managed to save so much time. ;)

About The Game

Puggsy was a puzzle-platformer released in 1993 for the Amiga, and later released in 1994 for the Sega Genesis. The feature that made it stand out from other Genesis games was that this game had a real-time physics based system which calculated each object's weight & trijectory. It also allowed for several objects to have distinct properties that other objects wouldnt posses. This system was very innovative & new for the time and wouldnt be used for over a decade untill the release of games like Half-Life & Max Pane where it became the Havok physics engine.
Note: In order for this movie to sync, you have to disable SRAM. This game uses SRAM as an anti-piracy tactic to prevent you from playing the rest of the game. This will also cause the first stage to desync as it slightly changes the physics of Puggsy.

Speed

Here are some general notes about how speed works in this game:
  • Your speed doesnt increase while going downhil. However it decreases when going up.
  • When you hit a wall, your speed is maintained unless you press the direction that is away from the wall.

Tricks/Glitches

Physics Abuse
Its no doubt that the physics are very simply coded and thus very abusable. Even the way objects bounce off walls can even be abused the wrong way. In one stage, a ball even manages to bounce the completely wrong way in order for me to catch it for use with the rest of the level.
The Pixel Trick
This trick is only mainly due to how the physics system handles grabbed objects. Whenever you grab an object, It will pull you towards a specific position relative to the object you are currently holding. This means that your velocity will also change. So, If you constantly let go & regrab an object, you will continuosly get pulled into position creating a boost. Although there are some objects which prohibit this trick from being useful due to their properties, it is very useful & saves many frames.
The Flying Glitch
As explained above, An object will try to center you into a fixed position in you grab it. Not only does this work horizontaly, but vertically too! This makes me gain the ability to jump very high which allows me to skip large portions of levels. However, This glitch is limited to only on specific frames.

Possible Improvements

This game isnt very hex friendly. Sometimes the physics can change per stage, & there is a slight frame rule when exiting stages. As a result, it is not fully possible that I would have been able to optimize everything on this first try. However, I will say that its pretty damn close.

Final Comments

This game was hard for me to TAS. It might seem simple since its just a platformer. But due to the physics, It was hard to come up with solutions only to find out that they didnt work. I worked really hard, and I think it shows. I hope you guys enjoy this TAS as much as I did!
I'd like to give a super shoutout to Aqfaq for finding improvements in my previous WIPs as well as finding all these tricks and for encouraging me to finish this run.

The credits gave me a good laugh. Yes vote! The TAS was also good enough. I'll encode this bugger. Also, my avatar somehow becomes ironic. One important question though: This game has a Sega CD version, why wasn't that TASed instead?

If you can't seem to figure out where the SRAM setting is in Gens, look under Options and it's right below the Sega CD RAM settings. Yes vote because you flapped your arms and flew like a bird despite having nothing that would ever make that possible. One level and yes vote from me.

I can't improve this anymore. Well done, Sonikkustar! Also, thanks to nitsuja for the option to disable SRAM. I think the boss fights in this game are uninteresting for a TAS, but they make nice screenshots:

You flew over our minds, while carrying heavy objects on the way! (Tools? This really is a "tool" assisted speedrun, then!) .. Yes vote =P

Why does it say "takes no damage" when you took damage while fighting Flurret (That's what it looks like =p)?

I dunno. I only looked at the actual stages for that goal. I didnt pay attention to the boss fights. I'll change it in a bit. ;)

Am I right in that he makes the final boss commit stupicide after the end of the input?

Indeed, he does. The poor guy is weak to his own eye lasers, and the TAS exploits a sweet spot which is pointed out in the credits (21:02 in the YouTube video). Yes vote for looking well-played (I've never played this) and being entertaining, even if the "move the bags of flour on conveyor belts" bit was a bit of a drag (but not the player's fault.)

Oh, man this game was my CHILDHOOD. I got this game with a bunch of other clearance stuff a long time ago and out of all of that junk was this special diamond in the rough. I remember I was pumped when there was a submission here that completed the bonus rounds and I couldn't wait until someone TAS'd the whole game. A 100% would be amazing too, but for now this totally gets a Yes from me! :D I love all the trickshots you do with items. This really is just brilliant! Totally blew my mind with how quickly you tossed all those coins in Badger Mill 2, and in Badger Mill 1 I laughed when you inexplicably threw the treasure chest into the oven. :P Also the fact that Halitosis the fire dragon lives in an ice world called Fire Heart is hilarious.

11b works, but after you start the playback, you need to uncheck this option: Options --> SRAM Enabled

Oh,it's cool. Could the second boss be killed by the right ball dropping?

Nope. The ball has to be in the air, above the boss's head on order for it to be registered as a hit. The balls were also manipulated there.

This was lovely! I love the way you discard objects when you're done with them. It's like: Puggsy: "Yay! A key!" *clap clap clap clap* "I love this key!" two seconds later Puggsy: "Who the fuck needs this fucking key!?" *casually flings it behind him as he continues to bounce along*
A warb degombs the brangy. Your gitch zanks and leils the warb.

I improved the spike ball level near the end by 32 frames: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/356027189/Puggsy-32-frames-faster.gmv

Awesome! I'll look into trying to improve it. Otherwise, great job! EDIT: Only saved 1 frame. However, It desynchs on the final boss. So I dont think this improvement can be in unless you find other improvements.

Would just like to say this was an excellent improvement on my TAS run, flying sure beats running. I do slightly regret not continuing my own efforts, but am glad to see someone else took this up and released something amazing.
