Uncanny X-Men is LJN's first foray into the X-Men universe and overall it is a poor performance on their part. To beat the game you play as one of the X-Men (Wolverine, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Iceman, Colossus, and Storm) and then a second player or the AI controls another X-Men character. The goal of the game is to get two keys in each level and use these keys to get through otherwise impenetrable walls defeating the bosses (Boomerang, White Queen, Sabretooth, Juggernaut) collecting a floppy disk that they drop and escape the level. After you beat the four levels you enter a code and go to the secret Magneto level. This level is set up in the same way except you get an end screen when you finish this level.
In this run I technically play two characters but by far the fastest strategy is to have only the single character, Nightcrawler, alive so the second character is immediately killed off in the quickest way I could find. Using only Nightcrawler is much faster as well because of a few reasons: 1) He is at least twice as fast as any of the other X-Men characters so with a second character a lot of time is wasted at the edge of the screen waiting for the other character to move to a point where the screen can move. 2) Nightcrawler has the ability to "teleport" through objects by running through them at the expense of some health. This means Nightcrawler can take short cuts that the other characters can't. 3) Like part two Nightcrawler's ability to pass through object helps to get to the bosses. As said in the first paragraph to get to the boss fights you must normally collect two keys that are located in the levels which unlock two doors immediately before the boss. When programming Nightcrawlers teleport ability LJN did not account for these doors and thus Nightcrawler can pass through the doors without collecting the keys.
There are really only two cons to using Nightcrawler those being that he has the least health of all characters in the game and as passing through objects removes health you must plan which obstacles you will pass through so that you can get to the end of the game before your health runs out. The second con is his attack. Half of the mutants in the game have the ability to shoot lasers long distance as an attack but the other half including Nightcrawler only are able to do what I believe to be a kick (your sprite just moves forward a few pixels without changing and then returns back to its previous spot). Because of this Nightcrawler has to move to avoid certain enemies that could have just been shot at with the laser. A benefit of this move is that for a frame it moves you forward more pixels than you would be able to run so it can be used to end levels faster saving almost a second overall.
Luck manipulation is shown in the game from the enemy position and the enemies that appear. The location and type of enemies that appear are depending on the x location of the character on the screen when it scrolls past the point of loading the new level portion. I have adjusted to find the fastest possible route but it is not possible to entirely avoid enemies. First to completely avoid enemies in some cases you have to move further than you would to avoid them later on. The second reason is that some enemies are better than others because the game is quite laggy and certain enemy combinations are much worse than others.
Also in this run the bosses are never attacked. Another programming flaw by LJN was that the floppy disks that the bosses drop are not necassary to finish the level so it is faster to never bother with the bosses and continue back to the beginning of the levels once the boss fight starts.
Finally, even though it does not affect the run at all I would like to point out another two errors LJN made in creating this game. First is that the last level is actually a secret bonus level that you must enter a code to get to after you beat the other four levels. The only indication in the game or in the game manual is a cryptic message when you finish a level that says "Seek the advice of the leader of the X-Men, Professor X, if you are not abel to make it to the final mission." Yes the typo is displayed in game. It turns out this message and some others are part of a secret message telling you to find the code on the back of the NES cartridge, but when you look they printed the wrong code. They say that the code is "+B+Up together with Start" when in fact the required combination is "Select+B+Up together with Start" so even if you did finish the game they make it impossible to beat the game.

Other comments

Even with with the poor design this was the most fun TAS I have done so far. I hope you all enjoy

DarkKobold: Judging. This will be a hard decision.

DarkKobold: In the end, there really isn't much TAS potential in this game. The run was done well, for what the game is. However, in the end, this game really lacks any technical merit to demonstrate in a TAS. Additionally, a large amount of the audience found it rather dull, Thus, it really fails to be a publishable-worthy TAS.

turska: Unrejecting.

Noxxa: Judging in consideration of the vault.
Noxxa: Accepting for the vault.

Ilari: Processing

If you are having trouble finding this rom in your directory, I've found mine was catalogued under "Marvel's X-Men (U).nes". And now, having watched the movie, I have to say this earns a no vote from me. The run wasn't too interesting without being able to properly tell what's going on, and ends on a gray screen that I have some trouble believing is the "you won" ending, and not some glitched out bit of input inviability concurrent with looping bgm. With gems like "Nightwalker," the submission text was more entertaining than the movie.

Absolutely bored to tears, even when fast forwarding. Plain, boring, absolutely abysmal graphics, plodding and almost pointless. The music was equally crap as well and did nothing but further irritate. I understand the choice to kill off the others, but even then it was just... ugh. Fast, but not fast enough to keep it from being boring and make it look like a game needing a TAS. A very nice attempt mind you, but not my cup of tea personally. No vote. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Priam. Well I feel stupid. I have no idea why the name switched in my mind half way through since I know what his name is. I have since fixed it and feel stupid. Also that is the correct ending. If you play through with two characters, never dying, collecting all of the keys, beat the bosses, collect the floppy disk things and then leaving the levels all of the same results occur. To both. I agree that it is not the most interesting video but my hopes were that the accomplishment of how thoroughly it was beaten would be enough but I understand if you disagree.

I'm sure it's very well played, but this game is just bad. It's like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles NES, except that it consists of only the top-down map screens. Ugh. I suggest this game be added to this list.

In all honesty, this was painfully dull. While I appreciate the effort that went into making this and the amusing submission text, I have never been this bored by a five minute TAS video. No vote.

So, you walk through walls to get directly where you need to go, and never fight anything? Sorry, no vote.

Thanks, antd, for the encode. To echo the crowd, it's amusing to see the game this broken, but it's not amusing enough. You end up circumventing so much of the crappy game design that what's left is just not interesting. It would be marginally more interesting if you could at least see a health bar on the screen, so that we could see the health management in effect that you had to do. ledauphinbenoit compared this game to TMNT. I'd actually compare it more to King Kong 2, but that game is more interesting in many ways. In fact, if you're interested in short, gimmicky games, I believe that run may be improvable (the SDA run of it may use a better powerup strategy, I think).
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Although I see that you put a decent effort into this movie, I am sad to say that I have to agree with the crowd on this one. I could summarize the movie in a few lines: Start Stage with 2 players Kill the second player Proceed to walk through walls with the first player While the movie does display some neat tricks, Whats presented from these tricks isnt very entertaining to watch. It feels like you are just walking around all over the place searching for the goal. Voting No for Game Choice suffering from "just run straight to justice".

Thank you for the encode, antd. I was really bored while watching this run, and that doesn't happen often when watching a TAS. This is just a bad game choice. I encourage you to try another game. If you find a game that looks like it will make for an interesting TAS, post on the forums asking other users' opinions first, then continue if we agree it would make for a good run. Voting No.

Don't know what you guys are smoking. This TAS is funny and interesting. Maybe it doesn't smash your mind after two minutes, but it is much comparable to the Ghostbusters TAS. At least have the decency to give some credit. goofydylan8: How many rerecords did you use for this TAS? The number seems to have been lost in the transition.

This is one of the games I had as a child, so seeing it beaten is nice enough for me to give a yes vote :) (I remember I could barely reach a boss, at much...) I guess not many played this game. Though to be fair there's no much action to see, no wonder why it gets so many no's...

I see this game is not going to be a fan favorite. Oh well, it was a fun process and at a little over 5 minutes at least it wasn't optimizing an hour movie and then having it be shot down. I understand where you all come from. After playing Wolverine I thought I would try the other LJN Marvel game and as everyone sees it was not the best choice. mklip2001: I might try to improve the King Kong 2 like you said. I do like these shorter ones since I am still honing my TAS'ing skills and I am sort of waiting for the fceux 2.16 to come out to commit to retrying the Lone Ranger. CoolKirby: I posted a WIP in the forums 4 or so days ago and I guess the fact that I didn't get a reply should have led me to understand that no one would have interest in this game. FractalFusion: Made exclusively in TAS Edit (heard there were some big improvements in it coming in 2.16 and it is all that I use which is why I am waiting to do a big movie) and as such there isn't a re-record count. I have never TAS'ed using the traditional method so I cannot even put forth a guess.

My biggest issue with this run is that it is 2 players for absolutely no reason. Killing the 2nd player every single time wastes time, and only makes the run 2 player in 'theory' but not in execution. Honestly, I'd vote a weak yes on a movie with only night crawler. However, as it stands, the inclusion of player 2 just feels sloppy.

and then a second player or the AI controls another X-Men character.
Single player would have been much, much slower.

I thought this was good, not mindblowing, but amusing enough for 5 minutes. It's too bad the health management and luck manipulation is not more obvious, but many RPGs are full of things you don't see and they do alright.

Despite almost nothing happening and the music being horrible I somehow liked seeing this crappy programming effort called a game being brutally vandalized. I wish you could save the world more times by doing absolutely nothing of significance. Yes vote.

'No' vote from me. Unfortunately, it was too long. If it were under a minute and a half, I'd give it a yes. But five minutes of this is just too boring.

This is probably the worst game I played on real NES hardware when I was a kid. Not even TASing makes it look interesting. Voting meh because I can see you put a lot of work into it.

I watched the whole thing and I loved every second. The backgrounds were remarkably varied and interesting, seeing how you killed player 2 each time was cute, the player's speed changes drastically and strangely, it was short and demonstrated a random, bizarre old game quite well. Sorry you've met such a wall of negativity :( I hope this gets published anyway, and even if it doesn't, I hope you keep up the good work.

about this: the game obligates you to use 2 players. Even if you play this game alone, the CPU will join you. There's not really an option on that matter. About the run: WOW THIS GAME IS BAD. And it got the superpowers mixed! It's Kitty Pryde the mutant that's supposed to walk across walls! I'll vote yes, it's short enough and brutally pass through the game. And... well, if isn't approved, I'll suggest adding it to Gruefood's Delight and the AVGN list

I feel bad you got so many "no" votes. I rarely log in except to rate a movie, but this needs to be contested. Yes, your movie is boring as all get out. But it is TASed well and I think that's what should matter here. You did your homework and you deserve the credit due. No one votes "no" on a new Mario Bros run even though it's just as boring and doing the same exact thing. Yes vote from me and I hope that if this gets a final "no" vote overall that it is somehow contested.
