I don't know if it's accurate to say that an entire run blew my mind, or more like parts of it. There were a few that blew my mind throughout most of it, but it's really unique segments that stand out as opposed to an entire run. Morimoto's SMB3 blew my mind when I first saw it, being so insanely fast compared to normal play (a novelty which quickly wore off with other TASs), as well as some amazing moments such as the run hop high in 1-1, or the 99 live stomp, which the movies which obsoleted it all adhered too. Another big part was shooting at things before they appeared, although many movies made since do a much better job at it. Morimoto's Gradius was crazy for the always take speed idea, and doing figure eights and other crazy things. Bisqwit's Castlevania was extremely novel, and introduced so many standard TAS ideas, which blew my mind when I first saw it, just realizing that you have to think about optimizing to such a level. Ideas such as use knock back to your advantage, throwing away items you don't need, abusing enemy collision and other things, working closely with spawning rates. I was also amazed when I first saw it to see Simon jump over one of those wide knights, no real player would attempt it. The most recent run is amazing for the precision, the route planning, and all the other stuff. Each run was filled with shocking moments of: Hey I never would of thought of that, and more so, none of the previous TASers did either! The first couple of SMB2's by Bisqwit weren't that great. But then SleepZ joined, and later Genisto, and suddenly the three of them were doing run after competing run finding new glitches and stuff I don't think anyone every would've dreamed of, plus each new novel idea they had to eke a bit more speed out of it. Each new glitch and idea was jaw dropping. Bisqwit did runs of MM and MM2 which were better than Morimoto's, and really started doing all sorts of novel things with the magnet beam, insane precision, such as having exactly one unit left all over the place, and glitching out borders of the screen. Bisqwit's first bot run was downright amazing for seeing jaw dropping amazing random abuse for powerups, jumps which were way too precise and lucky to be real and so on. Later MM2, the first big group one surely shocked everyone with Woodman's level. Once TASing was raised to the level it is now, I'm rarely shocked by a run as a whole, but surely there are moments. HappyLee's 6-2 for example. Arkanoid as a whole... Many moments in various iterations of Super Metroid. When the shell/enemy bounce back was discovered, and used in SMB2 full run, Super Demo World... The instana-kill in MM7. For me, being a recommend worthy run, is when someone who really knows the game watches a run for the first time and frequently yells things like "No, he did NOT just do that!", "That's not even possible!!!", "Who the heck came up with that idea? It's insane", "Glmp... (water goes down lungs, and eyes bulge)".

For me, it was the first TAS I ever saw, nitsuja's first Sonic 3 and Knuckles run. When I saw the Ice Cap Zone skip, my jaw hit the floor. I think that the current publication should be a recommended movie if it's not already. EDIT: I like the Super Mario World info box as the "Recommended Movie" icon.

Probably the first one that blew my mind was the SMB3 run where Mario got all those 1ups in the scrolling tank level. After that I think it was the Castlevania: COTM one where the character gets two cards immediately, glitches his way straight to the final boss, kills him in the middle of a cutscene, and levels up fourteen times.

My brain is already pretty fried up after all this years on the site, but the most impressive runs I've seen ended up being rejected by the puritans: Link to video Link to video

The first one was JXQ's SNES Super Metroid "all items" in 1:10:45.02. I found the first 10min of it on youtube and thought it was beeing played on console. I couldn't believe how perfect were the executions and it seemed to me like someone found a way to make the game play itself or something like that. Super Metroid was always my favorite game and i used to think the genuine way to play it was collecting all itens. Didn't even know there was other categories. My mind was blown by Red Scarlet's 55min run and i thought it was the limit before finding the 10min video on youtube. I found that there are still a lot of people around there that looks for proof that the game can be beaten in under 2 hours collecting all itens, most of them probably like the game but as me in the past doesn't know about other categories, so instead of RBO, a 100% run of this game would probably be something that will blow peoples mind, mainly if it's an updated version of the 100% run, including the crazy new tricks.

These definitely need to be re-examined. I did an attempt at a Kaizo TAS long ago and this is leagues ahead of what I did. I know the site doesn't like the Kaizo hacks but there are other hacks out there that have been accepted and Kaizo is a pretty notorious romhack that I think is worth including on this site.

The TASes that first blew my mind where Moritomo's Gradius, which I still prefer over the current run; The any% run of Super Mario World; The SMB3 run, and the glitched Circle of the Moon TAS. More recent examples are Pokemon Yellow in slightly above 1 minute, The "zero star" run of Mario64, and the "Family Feud" run, which would look funnier if it slowed down input a bit so that people could read it without having to pause. Even though it doesn't use game-breaking glitches, I really like the most recent Gimmick TAS.
No.

I suddenly think Gimmick must be in that list. Though the game is not famous at all, it appears as a TAS gem and it's unique features get abused insanely well. It has a deep and complicated engine and really conduct the sense of TASing the gameplay way.

Personally for me, it is Genisto's Princess-only Super Mario Bros. 2. He really showed me what a crappy speedrunner I am. Objectively? Hard to say, really. There was a certain 'wow' factor in seeing Batman completed without taking a hit and it turning out to be fastest possible way to complete the game. But maybe that's not objective enough either, considering that I, too, had TASed that game. It is probably hard to beat the unique position that Morimoto's Super Mario Bros. 3 TAS had. After all, it caused me to build a whole website dedicated for TAS videos. But that might also not be very objective, because it has a part of me in it. Then there's the immensely anticipated Mega Man II TAS by Morimoto and Finalfighter. At least that game is one that I did not TAS. Or did I? Turns out I actually did. Bummer. I will go with Inichi's Chrono Trigger non-newgame+ TAS. Though I translated that game into Finnish, I never TASed it. Phew. Inichi's run had the biggest "What In Earth Just Happened" factor of second-generation TASes on this site that I can remember. You can't beat Missingno coming crashing through another game to beat Lavos.

Morimoto's smb3 is legendary. It was amazing for famtasia standard.

Not to diminish the worth of it, but I wonder if there isn't quite a bit of nostalgia filtering attached to that particular run. It has the notoriety of being one of the very first TASes of an emulated game and therefore it's historically quite important, but is it really all that good? After all, it even got obsoleted later by another faster Famtasia run (IIRC)...

Well, now that I think about it, the first run is decent, but not as good as the current run entertainment wise. For example, While both obtain 99 lives, Morimoto's run imo breaks the 1 up chain too often to the point it looks not as smooth and amazing compared to the current run.

Genesis Sonic 3 & Knuckles in 45:55.82 by SprintGod. AND SNES Super Mario All-Stars: Super Mario Bros. 3 (USA) "glitchfest" in 1:06:46.28 by Genisto. Those two made me a lover for life.

Just like all art, it isn't just about the piece itself, context counts too. That run was created at a time when the whole idea of a tas was still in its infancy, so I would be in favor of giving it an extra special double sized star, even if we didn't give one to the runs that obsoleted it. True innovation is a rare and precious thing.

I'm probably somewhat baised, but I do love the Ocarina of Time (both MST and any%) and Majora's Mask runs. They are of highly popular games and I think they are pretty mind blowing if you are not familiar with the glitches in them. Even if you are familiar with the glitches they are very entertaining, fun and on an excellent technical level. If this is meant for Newcomers Majora's Mask would probably be the best out of these games. It's not glitched to death like OoT any%, but still has the very straight foreward any% goal with some very impressive glitches and gameplay.

My (minor) point was that it was improvable with Famtasia itself...
