(heavy Russian accent) In Soviet Russia, games crashes YOU In America, YOU crash game
Ever since Alekseï Pajitnov created the famous puzzle game in 1984, it has become one of the most challenging games ever. For starters, the speed of the falling pieces DOUBLES at level 29 (one space down per frame, instead of one space down every two frames). But thanks to improved techniques, people have finally overcome this so-called "kill screen" and have reached the actual kill screen, i.e. when the game crashes over the strain of reaching such a high level (for more references about records and the first recorded crash, see
I wanted to TAS this crash, and soon realized it can happen sooner than first hypothetized (level 155, lime factory), i.e. level 154, squid, when finishing the level with a single line. I tried every possibility for level 153 and no crash.
As far as game mechanics go, WHEN you drop your piece influence which one is the second one next (after the one previewed). This was hell to manipulate since I wanted as many Tetrises (4 lines at once) as possible to avoid too many delays.
Selected frame: any of the bugged colors; many charcoal?
Last frame pressed: 122990

feos: I really have to judge this!!!
feos: Thanks to Dimon12321 and adelikat for the reviews! Indeed this movie is slower than #8254: m_riss's NES Tetris "Fastest Crash%" in 32:46.76 that was rejected for optimization problems, and this movie has the same problems and more. Rejecting.

Nice! I would love to see a rebirth TAS one day as well.

#8254: m_riss's NES Tetris "Fastest Crash%" in 32:46.76 We have a rejected TAS which achieves the same goal 80 secs faster. Have you seen it?

I completely agree. Also, yes vote! EDIT: I didn't realize there were optimization issues in the run.
SMB2U is the best NES Mario game.

I played this back in BizHawk 2.9.1 and can confirm it syncs in that version of the emulator. Anyway, I like the brand-new glitchy Tetromino palettes later on in the run, but that's all I can really say.

Yeah, and the start of the run can be improved a lot in both this run and that submission. Movie 4853.

Now, that I've watched the temp encode, I see more of optimization issues. Comparing to the maximum score publication, this submission: 1) doesn't build a tower of pieces to create an artificial "floor" and put new pieces faster, 2) doesn't use the bug which counts 3-lines clearance as 4 lines, if the combo is done on the very top of the field, 3) doesn't use pausing to manipulate pieces. The mentioned publication clears 172 lines in 2 minutes 54 seconds, while this one clears only 89 lines in the same time. Voting No

unlike the other fastest crash this one does not use pause manipulation. There's something to be said for explicitly avoiding it, as it makes for a far more watchable TAS. For fastest maxout, the pausing isn't so bad, but for a 30 minute video its really annoying. However, if you avoid manipulating pieces, then stacking is important. This TAS shows an subpar stacking ability compared to top players (no offense, not many people can do that). A TAS needs to show top stacking ability at least be comparable to that of top level humans, or better. Stackrabbit exists now. If the goal is to avoid pausing, that could be used to ensure "optimal" placements, would would greatly reduce burns and making a faster TAS that also looks super human.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects
