It's a pinball game, with 35 stars that can be earned by completing specific tasks. You need to collect 15 of them and beat the four minibosses to get to the final boss and see the credits. If you play well, I think this game could be entertaining. Here's a test WIP (100% in 35 minutes or so): http://www.mzrg.com/filepost/MPL_wip.vbm What do you think? Would it be worthwhile to run? Any route changes or tips you might suggest? Would you prefer any%?

I think this this game needs to be given a try. Its just a pinball game but its a Mario pinball game. You pass levels beat bosses and acquire items, just like most Mario games. With frame advance it could be very fast so this seems highly TASable. I thought it was a good idea to open a topic. Heres a sort of preview :P http://www.mariopinballland.com/launch/index.html

I made a 100% testrun a while ago (about 35 minutes). I don't think I'm going to do a full run, but this could be useful for anyone who wants to. http://www.mzrg.com/filepost/Mario_Pinball_Land.vbm

This game is very interesting.I'd like to see a movie for it.But in my opinion, making a speedrun for such a game will not be easy. You must think out some methords different from the normal ACT games we played.Perhaps good luck is also the key to save time.

Very cool! This could probably be published. Nice work! Now will you submit it?

I agree. That was pretty excellent! If there were mistakes, they were hard to notice.
http://girlyyy.com/ The El Viento TAS is the only decent thing I submitted here.

That was AWESOME!!!! You can only see so many platformers. That run was one of the most original I've seen in months.

It'd still be 9:30 since that's the last frame of input but wow that was an amazing run. The only mistakes I could think of would be minor imperfections, like not grabbing a star on the very first frame possible, but, c'mon, I only saw that happen once. You did a very good job and I'd vote this a yes.

Yeah, but I think this one could be improved by more than 10 seconds or so, because I was terrible at the stars in the tent. And if it would be 9:30, then it would be faster to not shoot the bombs, and it would be faster if mario just have one life left, and that wouldn't look so good in my opinion.

What do you mean by that?

The Bonus stage take some time since you must shoot the bombs into the canon, but if you skip shooting the bombs, and just let them die, then you don't have to shoot the bombs onto the target, which would be faster. Also, if Mario just has one life left, then you just get 10 bombs, which would also be faster.

I think I would be more entertained by leaving the bonus stages as they are, as opposed to losing all but 1 life or something like that. Aside from grabbing stars more quickly your TAS blew my mind... you should definately submit it after you perfect your already great run.

I remember trying Pokemon Pinball Ruby and Sapphire... pinball is in no way easy to TAS. Great job! (And afterwards, 35-star run, please)

I started the 35-star run after this one was finished. I got like 6 stars until I realized that I nead a better route, so I cannot do a 35-star run right now. And about grabbing the stars more quickly, I tested a lot on that till I could grab a star fast and still go to the next place in a fast way. That resulted in that I didn't grab the star in the fastest way in some places, and because of this I had to do many re-records. And how do I submit the TAS?

very awesome indeed, well done. i only noticed a couple of spots that could've maybe been a few frames quicker, but who knows, i could be wrong, i'd definitely vote yes on this one. to submit a tas, read this page first: http://tasvideos.org/SubmissionInstructions.html

I submit it, but after that I realized that my tas movie was stopped 3 or 4 seconds after the last frame input, so how can I fix that now?

If Bowser flies out of his castle at the same time Mario falls into the depth, the game behaves as if the Credits had already run (Bowser's door is closed). If you get the jackpot bonus in Bowser's castle at the same time Mario falls into the depth, the ending will be skipped and you will not be entered into the highscore list. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35dQpjr4bpQ Also, in a TAS it's probably better to sacrifice all your extra balls to cut down on the bombs in the bonus game at the end. As the video above shows, though, maybe there won't be any bonus game at all in a 35 star run. EDIT: You can skip delay that occurs when getting a star, and boss key cutscenes by touching them with a bob-omb or Yoshi egg at the same time that Mario leaves the map. This should be useful in a few places...

It's been a few years, I still wonder if that trick I found is a timesaver or not... I'm watching the run to see if there is potential: - When using a bomb to get the ice key (from big fish) at the same time that Mario leaves the room, you can't get a yoshi egg - that means it might not save enough time. - You could do it in one of the first rooms in the desert, but it might only save very little time... - When using the yoshi egg to get the desert key at the same time Mario leaves, you will not get a lightning bolt. This looks definitely slower (getting lightning bolt seems faster). - I'm sure you could do it in the chainchomp minigame. That should save 2 seconds there. - Not sure about grassland.

Stuff I found: -You can pause and save&quit basicly at any time. You can do it when touching boss keys or when inserting the boss keys to skip some cutscenes. It saves about 1 to 2 sec per key insertion. -If you have a yoshi egg and save&quit, and then resume while holding B, it triggers the egg and brings up a blue pipe. But in some cases, Mario's spawn point is where the blue pipe is located so Mario is pushed down and he descends to the lower room.

I started a WIP for now, which finishes Ice world. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1037339208/Super%20Mario%20Ball%20%28J%29%202017%20this%20game%20suxt%20to%20optimize.bk2
  • The TAS by cetaka used VBA v19~23 and my WIP uses Bizhawk 1.12.0 mgba-core. There seem to be some slight differences in emulation/lag behavior. I was unable to reproduce strats in some places but I was able to come up with good strats and improvements overall.
  • The WIP is about 475 frames ahead (7.9 seconds).

Up till entering the pyramid http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1444080303/Super%20Mario%20Ball%20%28J%29%202017%20this%20game%20suxt%20to%20optimize.bk2 About 11.5 sec saved so far. I saved small time in all of the desert rooms. Lakitu room seems to be RNG but I found a good execution for it. Unlocking the pyramid is difficult with the strat I'm going for (hit enemy + hit switch with the same ball) and the end is too slow for my taste, but still ~1.1 sec ahead of cetaka here. At this point I think it's safe to say I'm going to try to finish a TAS. But it will be without death abuse (dying on purpose to have fewer bob-ombs in the bonus game) and without credits skip.
