King's Bounty is a turn-based strategy game. The objective is to recover the Sceptre of Order. Map pieces that reveal the location of the sceptre are gained by defeating villains and finding special artifacts. A normal play session would involve exploring four large continents and battling hundreds of creatures, but in this movie nobody gets killed and everyone is happy. After the game begins (at frame 585) it takes 25 frames to complete it.
  • Plays at hardest level
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Manipulates luck
  • Ignores semi-important goals in the game
If someone wants to improve it, watch these RAM addresses:
  • 00FFE8A8 (sceptre x-coordinate)
  • 00FFE8AA (sceptre y-coordinate)
{11,5} would be the perfect coordinates, but a) I'm not sure if the sceptre can be under the starting location and b) it may take more time to manipulate that than it takes to walk to the location I got, {11,4}.

adelikat: Accepting this run. The response is good and the run shows amazing luck manipulation. This should be the easiest job an encoder will ever get :p Hell, compressing the .png screenshot will probably take longer than the .avi. Come to think of it, there isn't much to choose from in the screen shot considering only 25 frames of gameplay :p

Bisqwit: Submission file replaced. According to the author, it is now 5 frames faster. It is indeed now only 610 frames long.

Maza: Nice touch with the "this WAS a tool-assisted recording". :) But I'm also in the no-sound boat here, regardless of decoder. (The audio filter in the K-Lite variant of ffdshow doesn't seem to work at all...but it only effects the sound on the movies previously mentioned by WarioMCP) What's more confusing is that the Felix the Cat recording you recently encoded works just fine.

I can't believe some people think that a movie can be too short to be a "valid" TAS, and that it should instead be published as a concept demo. I thought concept demos are those few videos which do not obey all the mandatory rules (eg. those starting from a savestate). This video certainly obeys all the rules and is a perfectly valid TAS. I don't see any problem with it. As for it being boring, there are currently published long videos which are a thousand times more boring than this one. I agree with what someone said: How can you get bored in 10 seconds? You might get disappointed because nothing special seemed to happen, but that's different from boring. In my case, there was actually a high entertainment value to this movie. And the entertainment was trying to figure out what was going on. I didn't understand at all what was going on when I first watched the video. After reading the submission text I understood it a lot better. Going through the video (the half second of gameplay) frame by frame was even more enlightening. This is much more than I can say from 90% of published videos. A 100% completion of this game (ie. getting all the mosaic pieces) might be interesting too, unless it's a several-hours-long run.

I believe that with heavy luck manipulation it can be done in under 1.5 hours. But that is going to be a very difficult task, with all the planning involved. If game's RNG is stable enough, it would first require to play through the game a number of times to calculate the encounter variations, probability of winning against each unavoidable army within the given resources, planning those resources, etc. A helluva lot of work to do. :(

I don't notice any problem because I'm using the almighty mplayer, but if the videos use some odd audio codec which is not working for many people, then it should definitely be fixed. And btw, is it really a good idea to publish in mkv format? Yes, it's better, but sadly still not popular. (Otoh, one could argue that x264 isn't still popular either, and if someone has it working, he probably has mkvs working too, but still... :) )

Well, it's not just this video. There's about half a dozen recent ones (most which Maza did) that the sound is broke and I want to know why. I REALLY don't wanna install another video player. I didn't like VLC anyways. It seemed to be a really poorly setup player. I like Media Player Classic and I want to use it. If the sound really is in here, there has to be a codec that's usable.

Thought I also prefer MPC to VLC, MPC will probably never be able to perform as well as VLC can without lots of rewrites and updates. That being said, stick with VLC.

Not quite like that. It was determined yesterday that the audio stream was indeed kinda broken (more specifically, it was mono stream with stereo header or something like that; that's why it doesn't work or plays at 2x speed on some software decoders).

I think it's a tad more than 5, but the number is maybe in single digits...among those who will mention it in a forum, at least. I have tried using GSpot to diagnose the problem, and it says everything is fine. Although I have noticed that the ffdshow audio encoder does not load up with the five Maza-encoded files that people have problems with. On my computer, there's actually a problem with the ffdshow included with the K-Lite pack because the audio encoder doesn't work at all, but updating it on...free-codecs I think...doesn't change the lack of sound on those five, it just uses the audio encoder for every other recording now. Playing with the audio settings so that mp3 decoding is active and etc. doesn't change the fact it doesn't load up. *shrug* Maybe there's something I'm too stupid to know about my computer which causes this...who knows. It's definitely fine with mplayer and VLC, but the latter screws up a lot of other things in my system and the former is...well...actually not bad, so maybe I'll stick with that. :) But MPC is my preference for all media files these days, and I'd like to figure out how I can get sound on those five uncooperative recordings. (Maybe not so much this one, but still...)

And you are very right. The people who don't participate on the forums (especially if they don't at least read the forums) shouldn't really matter because they don't have any idea how the site works. In fact, they probably don't even know how TASing works. I've done my fair share of lurking for a while, but I at least took the time to read through the discussions forums, FAQs, and game resources. >.>

You misunderstood me. Several people including Maza himself reported such an issue with these videos when the audio played at twice the speed (note that none of them were actually playing the movie at that speed!). It was due to decoder playing the mono (one channel) stream, interleaving it between both channels. It's not the end-user, nor the decoder error. The error occured somewhere in the chain of capturing and/or encoding.

The sound plays at twice the speed in WMP. In MPlayer, it works fine.

I guess that means MPlayer can determine if the audio is in fact mono, not stereo.

"ACM Reported an error on audio decompress (200)" I got this error looking at the video in VirtualDub. Now, is it REALLY the media players fault? Or the compression?

WMP played the sound back correctly on Super Punch-Out and Earnest Evans for awhile, even when I upgraded it to WMP11 (the latter actually had some lag problems, but whatever...), but then I screwed with ffdshow to make it work with MPC and now it only plays the sound at 2x speed and the video at 1x speed in WMP. Go figure. I actually get a different error with the movie in VDub; I get Error Code: 512 (ACMERR_NOTPOSSIBLE). It would NOT be my fault that I get this error, because I have never done anything to make videos have ACM errors in my life. It's something else that I am not able to understand on my own because I have never encoded and compressed anything before. The only thing I can realize is that this only occurs when Maza encodes a 16-bit movie...NES movies are fine. There's probably a correlation between this, and I am not able to figure out what due to my lack of encoding knowledge. Regardless, I hope that Maza still feels like encoding a 16-bit movie after all this. I like seeing the back-of-the-queue movies being published...even if I can't hear them. :)
