• VBA 19
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Manipulates luck
  • Genre: Action
This run is 162505 frames (45:08 minutes, according to VBA) long, 4139 frames (68.98 seconds) faster than my old run, and the majority of the gained frames (Approximately 2566 frames) comes from improved Metroid battles. The rest comes from better use of Spider Throw, Corner Cutting, Damage Boosting, and the faster ways to cross 2 * 1 "block" pits etc. The only "route change" is leaving the Gamma Metroid guarding the sector with Zeta Metroids, and killing him as I leave instead.
Every shot and bomb is there for a reason. Either to create lag, manipulate luck or just "Oh I have to wait so I might as well fire off a few rounds to make it look less boring".
Thanks to moozooh for pointing out that a couple of battles were improveable, and the impossibility to hex-edit led to... a few more improvements. Thanks JXQ for making my re-record count look a bit more truthworthy and humble.
Also thanks to adelikat, Rick, meepers' brother, Randil, AngerFist, evilchen, herooftheday, Raiscan, Lag.Com, upthorn... eh, the usual. Also Maximus, since your TASeditor saved me about 200 years of redoing in desperate times.

adelikat: Accepted and encoding.

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. Oh! I also replaced the ROM name.
  • You indicated Metroid 2 - Return of Samus (UA) [!].gb
  • I updated it to Metroid II - Return of Samus (UE) [!].gb

Why did you use vba v19? the whole point in v20 is that it fixes a gameboy emulation error

AT LEAST I DIDN'T SLEEP WITH LUMBERGH! ... 1) I was not aware of VBA20 when I started this run 2) Once I asked for the differences, the only reply was "It emulates the game accurately." which didn't really help. 3) When I got this reply, I was far into the run, and I did not want to restart.

What does v20 emulate correctly in this game that v19 doesn't? And now, I watch the run. -- Edit: And now, I'm voting yes. Really nicely done. You got those metroids to behave like a woman who knows what's good for her \o/

[2007-08-18 05:54:46] <Randil> the frame advance function doesn't work very good on version 20, at least not for me. sometimes it advances 15 frames in one click

Surefire way to get this effect: Open up Pokemon Red/Blue/Green in v20, and hit frame advance twice. Frame counter: 0, 1, 13. I've never seen this effect during a period in which a game would accept input. As for the movie, bravo! I really want to see a select-glitch version now. :)

Yes vote for the improvement, the care taken into making this run and for entertaining me despite never playing the game.
<adelikat> I am annoyed at my irc statements ending up in forums & sigs

Can we, for god's sake, publish this one with colors? Maybe? Please? I'm just curious, because last time most people agreed on colors=better, and then Adelikat (or whoever published it) basically went "colors suck" and did B&W, even after a long discussion about it. I can post the color scheme I use for this game (based off someone else's, etc) if you want, but I stand by my statement that even psuedo-color is better than black and lame.

I would personally preffer to have it b/w, BUT I would not mind if some sad encoder would spend an evening to encode this in color. Where that file would be hosted is another question. I am not saying "Let's have 2 Torrents for my run on this site" (Like with JXQ's Super Metroid, but that is due to a much better reason), but I am giving my permission that this can be encoded in colors, even tough I would like to see it in b/w. Well whatever. Do as you please =)

Hey Xkeeper and anyone else interested in having color in the avi, it can be adjusted here by turning the dial under 'CONTRAST'. The options are "brighter" and "darker". But seriously, the game doesn't have color. Why give it color and not taint these?

Because Metroid II and the Wario Land series are the only game boy games that have their own preset colours in the game boy color

It was decided before that this game looked remarkably better with psuedo-coloring, and as the unofficial Metroid 2 DX hack isn't allowed, well...

I don't think it was "only" as much as "notable" (quoting Wikipedia, as you did). Many games had preset palettes (Pokemon Red and Blue had, well, red and blue palettes). Honestly, I just thought most people preferred it when viewed in psuedo-color... (that, and I'm not particularly against publishing other GB movies with psuedo-palettes either)

I enjoy the Metroid II runs more when they're in color, but then again I almost never watch AVIs so whatever the decision may be it doesn't affect me.

That was awesome, I can't believe you were able to optimize the Metroids this much. Very firm yes-vote from me.

Haven't watched yet, so I'll vote later. Color would be better imo if possible, but sometimes i think the sleek black and white is more attractive than some mesh of red and blue. If realistic colors could be possible without breaking the rules of the site I'd be all for it. Is there any such rom, and if so will it sync with this run?

I can't belive I just watched all that... I find this Metroid game the worst of them all and have never been arsed to play through it. Still I watched it *sigh*. You didn't even go through the walls in order to beat the game faster. And I like that it makes so much sense that you run faster with a heavier suit and that you roll faster than the regular one. If I'm going to roll to the school every morning, that would take years. Voting no. Edit: No, I'm not serious=P. I liked it and voted yes ^^.

Actually, the color information already exists in the ROM, and is identified autimatically when played through SGB. The color palette I showed in the previous run's submission thread was merely a tweaked version of the original colorization.
