This run attempts to make a Super Mario 64 1 star TAS as tightly optimized as possible. The difference between this and the previous (just-canceled) submission are changing the way Mario begins the stair BLJs, and a much faster way to get through the elevator at the end of Bowser in the Sky.

This saves 43 frames from the just-canceled submission, and 69 frames from the latest published TAS (or about 2.3 seconds). As has been said before, a 0 star run was attempted (and it will be again), but we didn't manage to get either basement BLJ (30 star door steps or Hazy Maze Cave steps) fast enough to actually pass through the Dire Dire Docks wall (though getting past the door in front of it was successful).

  • Abuses programming errors
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Aims to complete the game in the fastest amount of time.

Emulator used: Mupen64 ReRecording Edition versions 1 & 2 with
  • Jabo's Direct3D8 1.6
  • Jabo's DirectSound 1.6
  • TAS Input Plugin 0.6
  • RSP Emulation Plugin

Thanks to Swordless Link for the stair idea that he found, tested, and let us use.

adelikat: Accepting for publication as an improvement to the published movie.

Maybe if you play it without BLJ, you could pass it off as glitchless low%.

Um.... it'd be glitchless any%, and 'no BLJing' was already agreed to be the restriction of the movie to make sense for why you'd have to collect 70 stars.

The question is glitchless vs. no-BLJ Personally I dont care. but glitchless would make more sence.

There already was an agreement that a new catagory could do whatever it wanted bar the blj glitch.

Just for a change of pace, I think I'll make a comment that is actually about this run. Much better camera work compared to the currently published run. It was very easy to follow what was going on, and you got rid of that annoying rapid camera change thing. The long jumps in Bowser 3 were really nice to watch. The extreme closeup during Bowser 2 lasted a little longer than I'd like, and I didn't really care for the bit where the camera followed Mario during his intentional damage when he jumped into the lava. First person might have worked if it hadn't happened so quickly (was a bit hard to follow). If Mario really must jump in the lava, it would probably have looked better from a distance. Anyway, that's just an aesthetic thing, and other those short bits of Bowser 2, I thought the camera work was very nice. It was also technically well done, and it's worth a Yes vote. The any% run is getting pretty short, though. It would be nice to see another 120 star run. This is an amazing game, and still great fun to watch after 11 years.

i will laugh so hard if this submission duplicates the situation from the last one (wait forever to publish, publish, new faster submission the next day)

I think that was because of some confusion regarding the encoding; hopefully not something too likely to happen again, assuming this gets accepted. ;)

Voting yes! I find this one at least (if not more) as entertaining as the previous one. Not sure why some people feel sorry at all that the 1 star run replaced the 16 stars run. After all, the 16 stars run is a glitched run and so is this one. A faster run is a faster run. By the same token, I wouldn't feel bad at all if there's a zero star run that obsolete this one. I've enjoyed all of the Mario 64 runs so far -- still waiting for the all-coins run.

Probably because the 16-star run showed at least part of the underlying game, whereas the 1-star shows almost nothing. Faster is not always better.

And the 120 star run shows pretty much all the game, so that should be the only one we publish!

I always thought that a 88 star run would be able to show off as much as the game as possible without getting boring, but that's just me.

I've always prefered the format of a 86.5 star run, myself.

Why not a 57 Star Run with restrictions on using cannons or collecting coins on every 3rd level?

If you really want people to see everything Mario 64 has to offer, you have to do the 131 star run. Sheesh.

3 is the golden number of comedy. You just overdid it, sirs.

As a judge, I tell you the chance of acceptance is quite high. With the 1 star run being possible, the any% no longer shows off much of the run. But more importantly, the any% now shares something in common with the 100% run in that neither show off planning as to which stars to get in order to achieve some fast time/goal. The published movies are now a "all or nothing" thinking with stars. As a result there is a niche in the SM64 movies that a movie that needs to strategically determine which stars to obtain (for whatever reason/goal) could fill. This type of route planning and "where is going to go next?" feel is entertaining. A 70 star run could very well satisfy this.

Cool, that's encouraging. I guess that would give SM64 three categories in the end.

Seriously, it's annoying to see people complaining about improvements to games. Considering that this run doesn't remove entertainment value from the previous version, there's no reason to complain.
You know what else is annoying? Seeing the same motherfucking game ran 2 seconds faster than the previous version.

There are no other places to watch TAS videos. This is the only site. I am angry at how much effort is put into something so trivial (Come on, 2 fucking seconds?) When there are other games that can be ran. I check this site every day for something new, and when I see something like this, I get disappointed. Please run some other fucking game, or at least try to run the 120 star path. I am pretty sure there is a piece in all of the publishers that are tired of re-encoding the same video, just 2 seconds shorter each time.

Try to keep an open mind about their improvement. It is easy for you, as a viewer to want someone else tasing a game you want, but as you know, there are many factors that needs be considered here. Like having a interest for a game, time, patience and lots of other things. For the record, we strive for perfection so knowing they improved the former run by around 2 seconds seems quite natural. Like moozooh said, if you are not satisfied with tasvideos, there is always speedruns.net. Peace out!
