What is the easiest game to start TASing on. im new and i have tried to tas in n64 games but its hard. i need an easy 2d and is there like a list of tricks or glitches that will help me in learning im hoping on posting videos on youtube

Tetris is one of the easiest. Metal Warriors (SNES) is easy and isnt on tasvideos. This has all tricks I know: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=1033A03D2F53C7B4 Only trick missing is that you can shoot while moving backwards if you press Left+Right at the same time.

I was about to suggest Tinhead for Sega Genesis; also you should read the FAQ, you should be able to find some pages with tons of glitches for games, though mostly games that have already been TASed to death: http://tasvideos.org/WhyAndHow.html

Picking a game that you know and like is probably a better choice. TASing on NES with FCEUX is easiest I'd say, but I'm probably biased. There is a guide to get started at the FAQ: http://tasvideos.org/GenericTips.html

Run Saber for SNES is pretty easy; I was able to do a pretty good couple of TASes of it using ZSNES (which doesn't have a lot of the tools SNES9X does) and even got one published.

Soulrivers made a [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNeRUEEdtFc&feature =channel_page]WIP[/url] of the first Metal Warriors level; here's the thread for the game. He said it's really hard to optimize, though, so it might not be a good newbie project. Mind you, I'd love to see a TAS of it.

He said he wanted something easy and 2D, to learn TASing. He never even mentioned that he wanted to make a TAS that will be published for this site... why is everyone suggesting specific games that haven't been published yet, or that they would like to see? It seemed to me that he just wanted to learn the basics to be able to post some movies on youtube...

I say the best way to start TASing is to pick a game and do something with it at 25% speed and start taking it from there. It may not be optimal, but when you're starting out it eases you more into the thought process that goes one when making one. Don't try doing everything at once, just pick a feature and work on it.

i found a list of games and when you click on that game it would give you a list of tricks and some of the tricks i would have a youtube video next to it. does anyone know what that is and have a link to it.

Once there is a way to create an input file that, when processed by a suitable emulator or command processor, exactly duplicates the input used in a game like Portal, and as soon as tools are developed like frame-advance and savestates for PC games (preferably in a PC emulator), this can be done, but for now those speedruns are best discussed in a community for unassisted runs, like http://speeddemosarchive.com/ I should mention that work is being done on getting DOSBox to allow us to TAS old DOS games, so don't give up hope; of course like most other games here it's rare that TAS-ability is developed for platforms while they are still current...I think only the GBA has that honor, though the DS and Wii just might get there before they become obsolete. Also, the best version of snes9X is probably the TASVideos-modified "improvement 13" of v1.43, available at this site linked from the Emulator Resources page: http://www.bluetoaster.net/emu/rec.htm The best input plugin for Mupen64 is the TAS Input Plugin, but if you don't like that you can try Rage.

I'd start with Parodius on the SNES. It's easy, doesn't need frame advance and the result can look very cool if you make the right stylistic choices. You'll also find out how it sucks if your movie desyncs (unless those problems with the game have been fixed in the meantime).

If an emulator allows you to use frame advance, you are expected to use it; that reminds me, one good source of new TAS records is when yet another emulator gains frame-advance ability.

So you recommend newbies to start by using frame advance? If you don't, then I don't get how this is relevant to the topic. In games like Parodius the difference between using frame advance or slow motion is often only that slow motion looks more natural. People who are new to TASes can create good looking movies on it quite quickly and it will give them a feeling for what looks good and what doesn't and get them used to basic re-recording.

Due to the way Portal handles loading the game when you load a save# file, the game does not start at the exact frame that the save was made; a random number of frames is inserted before play resumes. Also, singlestep (frame advance) and timescale (slowdown) affect the loading time before Portal loads, which causes the game to be frozen in a loop before the game loads, causing it to crash. It's ironic that the game was given all of the tools in order to make TASes, even incredibly in depth memory watching; however, a TAS can only be made either in real time with savestate abuse, or in one setting with frame advance, but not both, thus making it impractical. Perhaps there is some external way to solve the problems; myself and others haven't found a solution yet.
