Knuckles in Sonic The Hedgehog TAS by JXQ

Here we have an impressive hack put together by Stealth, placing Knuckles into Sonic the Hedgehog 1. The game has been discussed here a bit, but you can find its official topic at the Sonic 2 Beta message board. All of Knuckles' abilities are preserved and are true to the feel of playing as Knuckles in other Sonic games with LOCK-ON TECHNOLOGY.
I worked on this run and my Sonic run concurrently. The games were similar enough that doing them together helped keeped things fresh in my mind, yet different enough that it didn't get too repetitive.
I suggest watching the Sonic run first before this one, because the Sonic run shows how the game was meant to be played before watching this run break that mold.

Points of Interest:
  • Green Hill 3 - The bottom route after the speed shoes does get to the boss faster, but not being able to hit him right away more than negates this difference.
  • Labyrinth 2 & 3 - Releasing the button while sliding on the ground gives a pause, which gets the ball rolling for some nice zipping action.
  • Scrap Brain 1 - Sonic's route with the zipping is quite a bit slower than the route taken here (Thanks to Ouzo for this route).

I will agree there. From now on I will look for a link to a hack if I can't find it anywhere else on my normal sources. So from now on, I will reserve judgement until I see it. ;3

Tried a different strategy, and it indeed was 20 frames faster. Could be even further improvement there. Good eye! And thanks for the careful watching, ZeXr0. However, I will save this and other possible improvements for a second version someday, or for someone else to obsolete.

Wow I never thought that I could find some improvement on a TAS :P I just saw that the speed went down :P I kinda good to see that something it not optimal, but don't ask me to find out how to improved it. I think play Stepmania for too long makes my eyes see thing a little too fast :P EDIT : Take a look at 6:10 I don't know why you stop, then jump just before the check point ? Wouldn't it be faster to just jump over the block and then roll. Not sure if it could be faster.

The submission actually just links to the official forum thread about the hack on Sonic 2 Beta. If you happen to find the ROM there, well then, that's a neat coincidence, because we're not allowed to link to ROMs here at TASvideos ;)

I found it, watched it and loved it. Pure Quikness! From now on im playing this version, its much better in my opinion. Those glitches were nice too, made you save alot of time. Very impressed. I vote YES

This is a very respectable hack, almost seems like an official game. The variety that knuckles provides makes an old game new and exciting again. This movie has great execution and is very entertaining. Voting yes.

Very well done hack, handling is spot on, and it follows the official formula invented for Knuckles in Sonic 2. Also, this run now has 43 Yes-votes, I think that's more than enough for consideration as an accepted hack. Can we get a verdict on this please?

Please hold off on this publication. I've searched several places for possible improvements, all which were dead ends except for SY3. I will improve it and hex-edit the rest of the run together, sometime around the new year. I'm not sure if it will improve the game timer or not for that level, but I might as well improve it.

In regards to this run's improvements...I don't know where they went. I can improve the area in SY3 very slightly, but nowhere near the 20 frames I found before. I also was losing a frame or two in the following areas due to I don't know why. Anyway, this improvement would not improve the game clock by itself, and I've decided to instead spend this time implementing the improvement in the other Sonic run, so this can be set back to "accepted".

You are not forced to vote Yes, but you have to see the movie before, also, you must explain why you voted no. And I don't think that you should vote no only because and the game shouldn't be like that. Please vote on the run itself and not on the game.

Not liking the game is a perfectly good reason to vote no. See the Guidelines. The question is if the movie is interesting to watch, and the game obviously plays a part in this. You are right that you should always watch the movie before watching, and that an explanation of your vote is always appreciated (even if it's a Yes). JXQ: Will do.

it does not matter. people are free to vote whatever they want, whenever they want, even if it's not based on good reasons or blatantly break the rules. the voting system automatically takes care of this, a bit like in winter sports when the best and worst notes are excluded before calculating the average note in ski jumping or ice skating. no need to blame anyone.
