This is my second run here.
I cannot write so many sentences, because I'm very weak in English.
Therefore, I often quoted Floogal's forum post and the commentary of previous submission, to explain the detail of a glitch. Thank you.

Luck Manipulation Tricks

B-Button RNG trick

Pressing B once (outside battle) brings the party status screen. On this screen, the Random Number Generator (RNG) is used once every frame. It is used everywhere, but reduces the use for the long time by this TAS as much as possible because step stops.
During a battle, moving in the menu once uses the RNG once, and that process takes 2 frames usually. Therefore, manipulating the RNG before a battle by certain ways is faster than moving the cursor in the battle.

Zigzag stepping

Because stepping on the border which determines whether the game generates an enemy uses the RNG, stepping over the border again and again is an effective way to manipulate the RNG quickly. While doing the manipulation, Ness & co. look like walking in zigzag. This is why I named this method "zigzag stepping".

General Tricks

NPC Manipulation

Manipulating the RNG also controls NPC's move direction, then it saves a couple of frames in various scenes.

Tail Positioning

When a person joins the party, s/he walks slower than normal speed. Therefore, the length of the event can be shortened, by letting the tail of the party member stand close to him.

Stutter-Stepping

You can ignore some of hotspots by releasing the arrow key periodically. In the early part of the run, Ness skips Starman Junior battle. This is one of major use of stutter-stepping. The pattern to perform the skip is to press arrow key in one frame, then release it in one frame, and repeat.
Also, Stutter-stepping can stop the move of enemies who pursue Ness. At Giant Step, Attack Slug tags along behind Ness. This is done by stutter-stepping. The pattern to perform the skip is to press arrow key in seven frames, then release it in one frame, and repeat.

Skip sandwich

Skip sandwich makes Ness's walking speed 1.5x faster for 10 seconds (and skip sandwich DX keeps the same effect for 20 seconds). Faster speed allows us to pass through a cliff which cannot be passed in normal speed (the cliff near the tunnel before Threed, for instance).

Photo Shoot Teleport trick

As you may know, photo shoot can be skipped by teleporting. But it cannot be skipped stutter-stepping. He is tough.
Although, Ness & co. never say "Fuzzy Pickles" in the run, because the run skips the most part of the game :P

Walk Through Walls Glitches

Teleporting Through Walls Glitch

The maximum speed of teleportation exceeds eight pixels per one frame. It allows us to go through a thin wall, in certain pixel positioning.

Walk Through Cliff Glitch

You can go through the gap of some cliff. Read gocha's note for details.

Walk Through Stairs Glitch

Everything in Earthbound is in one large map (see here). Whenever you walk through a door/cave-entrance/hole in the floor, the game warps you to where its destination is.
Now, when Ness & co. step onto a staircase (like those under Threed or in the pyramid), they automatically move forward a bit & "lock" onto the staircase, so that they can only walk up or down diagonally. If the game interrupts that locking procedure (by telling you someone's HP is getting critical due to poison/cold/etc. -- possibly other things like your Dad calling you could also work), then control gets messed up, and Ness & co. get "ghosted".
While ghosted, you can freely walk through anything, and directly walk around the map posted above with impunity. Most areas will appear pitch black due to having a different tileset than what is currently loaded, but you can reset the tileset by using the Town Map (if standing in an area that shows up on it) or the Sound Stone. You can hear the music of whatever area you're in, so that can help you orient yourself. In order to unghost yourself, you must go through a door or warp somehow (death, use an Exit Mouse, teleport). Doors only exist in areas with loaded tilesets.
Some rules -- don't go out of bounds. It will likely freeze. Also, you can never go below where you activated the glitch -- I guess the game tries to lock you onto the staircase, and gets confused when you're nowhere near it. This "can't go below" line stays in effect after unghosting yourself, and also when warping via doorways, teleport, etc. So don't enter the Threed hospital after starting the glitch in the Threed underground passageways. You can clear this "don't go below" line by heading back to where you started the glitch & walking onto the staircase normally -- everything goes back to normal completely when you do so.
Now, you can start the glitch, and then (provided the area isn't below you) immediately stroll right up to Giygas's lair. Use the Sound Stone to refresh the area (if you need to), walk in & out of the doorway to unghost yourself, and fight Giygas. ...except that the game will freeze on the first prayer cutscene. As you play, the game sets or unsets "flags" that it can check later to see if you've done certain things. The flag that is required for the prayer cutscenes to work is set when you travel back in time in the Phase Distorter. But we can't just glitch-warp to where Poo learns PSI Starstorm omega, as the only doorway to unghost yourself is on the wrong side of the chasm.
So we need to use the Phase Distorter in Saturn Valley. This requires (1) dropping down the hole into the Lost Underworld (this sets a flag that gets Apple Kid & Dr. Andronuts to appear in Saturn Valley), and (2) beating Ness's Nightmare in Magicant (this sets a flag that gets Dr. Andronuts to ask for the meteor piece). Thus, the game involves rushing through until we're able to glitch-warp, dropping down the hole to the Lost Underworld (and death-warping back to Threed), glitch-warping to Magicant & beating Ness's Nightmare, and then continuing the game like you normally would after finishing Magicant.

adelikat: Changing the verdict to having it obsolete the published movie. This was brought on by discussion in the forum topic as well the discussion regarding Chrono Trigger. Obsoleting the published movie keeps are options open for a future movie. We have the option of deciding to have a no glitch any%, 100%, an "all aspects" type category, or none at all.

^ Technically, the Skip Sandwich is only necessary for one glitch -- going from Twoson to Threed. All the other uses of the item are simply to cover ground faster. Still, you're right that it's a very appropriate name in this run's context.

Giygas caused a lot of fear and other strange feelings when he is seen for the first time. It is just the icing on the cake for the weirdness that is Earthbound. So your reaction is not strange at all. Giygas is just that messed up.

Ok, this movie will be accepted. What needs to be discussed more is whether it obsoletes the previous, what the category(s) will be, etc. Both movies use glitches, so I really don't like the idea of a "less glitchy" category.

This is the decision I am leaning toward right now. The previous movie did not intend to show more aspects of the movie, it attempted to beat the game in the fewest number frames. This movie beats that movie in its own goals. I think it should obsoslete the previous. A new movie could be made with a better set of criteria for some sort of 100% or "all aspects" goal. A movie made with these goals in mind is going to fulfill them much better than a movie that tried to be an any% run and is unaware of new techniques/glitches. Opinions?

Both movies use glitches, so I really don't like the idea of a "less glitchy" category.
If you ask me, I don't like the idea of putting the "glitched" tag on this run either. I mean, it still is over one hour long! I'd vote for obsoletion for the same reasons you listed as I see no real reason why the old run shouldn't be obsoleted.

Length should have nothing to do with whether a run is tagged glitched or not. However, I see the logic in obsoleting the previous one since it did follow the any% idea, but it happened to be all 8 sanctuaries since the current glitches are not known. I say that a new run could be made with the all sanctuary idea by disallowing the staircase glitch (too easy to end up directly in the sanctuary, thereby making it too similar to this run) but allowing other glitches to create a new category, but for now leave it as one.

why not keep both runs, and call this one "Staircase Glitch Run" and the old one by halamantariel and nitrodon the "Staircase Glitch-less Run" That seems to be the make or break between the two runs anyway, aside from the occasional skip sandwich glitch or an extra walk through walls that was present before.

I think they're aiming for a less arbitrary goal. I really do think the older run should be preserved somehow, but this submission should definitely fit the "any%, fastest" category. I don't think judging candidacy for a run should be based on intent alone; yeah, the old run was meant to fit the "any%" category, but it also happens to fulfill all the major plotline objectives (visit the eight sanctuaries, have weird hallucinations, wake up and save the world). Couldn't that run be bumped into another category instead?

Both runs aimed to beat the game in the shortest amount of time possible using all currently known tricks and glitches, right? Can't you accept that this run obsoleted the old one by that definition, and by a very significant amount? And that obsoletion is in order because they both are in the same category? Now, if the old run was made in the current day and knowingly left out such glitches and skips, then you could make the argument. Obsoleting a movie doesn't make it disappear forever.

It's just my 2c, if most people here feel it should be obsoleted I won't lose any sleep. I just think, from the perspective of someone who likes Earthbound and would like to watch a TAS of it, it'd be neat to have the choice between the old run (which plays through the game in its entirety) and the new run (which breaks the game entirely). They're both entertaining, after all.

I'd like to add another key point to this. If it were indeed made in the current day, it is likely that it would likely turn out differently as it would make better decisions in order to meet a 100% type goal (as well as make use of some new tricks discovered in the making of this submission).

One must keep in mind the mentality of things, though! Who knows how long it would be until we see a newly published "low glitch" run, and if it would even pass the extreme burecratic process (no, really, that's basically what waiting until it gets submitted until deciding if we should have separate categories is). The difference between Chrono Trigger and Earthbound is that the Earthbound run still stands as being fairly impressive today, whereas CT was beaten by a mere ordinary speedrun (so the obsoletion made sense). The intentions of a movie mean nothing! Absolutely nothing! How it plays out is what matters. If I made a TAS that set out to make people want to watch it while taking a shit, and they instead watched it while doing trigonometry, a faster movie that did make people want to watch it when taking a shit shouldn't necessarily obsolete the older one; because it's still good, and the new one isn't necessarily fun to watch while doing trigonometry. It's crude, but here's another example: you have a run that very obviously does something much differently from a new run, in a way that almost-if-not-completely changes what happens in the movie. I'm talking story-skipping or game-breaking type stuff. The old run is still impressive, but should the new one necessarily obsolete it? They're still around, yes, but they don't get the Torrent encode support that the non-obsoleted versions do, and they're usually kept "hidden", so to speak (I can remember one movie that did mention and link to an obsoleted run in the description, but that's it). It might not be the best impression to give off to new visitors, you know what I mean? "Oh, they played this RPG I like. But hey, what's this? ...okay, this is kinda cool! But why don't they have runs of RPGs that don't do all this crazy stuff?" It might give them the wrong idea, that we don't have full game runs of longer movies. And as I mentioned, having strict definitions isn't always the best choice. There's a distinct time difference between the two implicitly proposed any%, best time through any means, and 100%, best time without this staircase glitch. We have had many runs that were "low glitch" in the past. Link to the Past probably being the best example - it's actually a perfect comparison. I believe the warp-to-below-the-screen glitches are disallowed in "normal" runs, but it doesn't mean they obsoleted the normal one. Too extreme for you? Okay, how about Pulseman? The glitchy run didn't obsolete the not-quite-as-glitchy one in this case (mostly because none existed before then), but the not-quite-as-glitchy one came later and was accepted. It's precident (and not overly dated precident either)! Or how about Dragon Warrior 3? This may be most damning of all towards the obsoletion argument. The glitchy run came after the not-quite-as-glitchy run, but didn't obsolete. Yeah, the two came within close proximity of each other rather than one being three years older, but it still shows my point. So what is my point, you ask? Well, best case: keep both runs, and worst case: obsolete, but officially state outright that runs that don't use the staircase glitch are still allowed, no questions asked, and no discussions "deciding to have a no glitch any%, 100%, an "all aspects" type category, or none at all." Glitched and not-quite-as-glitched (not "no glitch any%", which I might mention sounds pretty lame) have been allowed in the recent past - especially with game-breaking glitches - why bother having lengthy arguments about whether they should be allowed now? Changed standards or not, it's still pretty ridiculous to either limit people to using all glitches game-breaking or not to get as fast a time as possible, or to use no glitches, go for 100%, or to do "all aspects" (what you're allowed to do to do all aspects being seemingly intentionally debatable). As for what defines a category seperation...stop being so institutionalized. :) There is a definition out there, I'm sure, but explaining it and debating over it is pointless, as common sense can dictate it most of the time anyway. So yeah, if we absolutely must obsolete the old one, make it perfectly clear that runs that don't use the stairway glitch are still allowed. Because they should be; there's no sense in arguing over that point IMO, much less saving the argument until a new run that doesn't use it comes along.
