Wizards and Warriors 2 is a platformer. (Lots of jumping on platforms, in fact.) The evil wizard Malkil has split himself into the 4 elements. You must fight each to assemble the Iron Sword, which you need to defeat the wizard.

Bugs/tricks:
Double jump:
After you land, if you jump again, you can slide a little further than usual, allowing you to get past obstacles that you are not supposed to be able to jump over. (For example the golden egg, and the golden fly can be gotten this way. Many ramps are skipped using this. That is what the extra small jumps are for.)
Quick exit:
After defeating a boss, you are able to collect a piece of the Iron Sword. The exit does not work until you collect the piece. You are supposed to exit as part of the animation after collecting the piece. However, if you collect the piece and land by the exit, you will use it before all of your keys and magic are drained, thus saving time, keys, magic, and your magic projectile.
Water boss with windbane:
The water boss is vulnerable to windbane thus allowing us to skip the entire underwater section of the map. This does not appear to be true of the other bosses, however. Note that doing this typically causes you to bump what is falling off of the top several times causing you to lose all of your health. Since it is during an animation, you do not die. You get right back up and go through the exit.
Long distance attack of Earth boss:
The hit-touch for the Earth boss appears to not take into account screens, so you can attack him exactly one screen away and have it register as a hit. I use this bug, but it makes the movie slightly less than a second longer.
Slide through enemy:
While sliding, it is not checked whether you are touching an enemy, allowing you to pass right through them without taking damage.
Luck is manipulated to get enemies to drop magic nuggets to fill the magic meter. Once it is full, you get infinite magic. I do this right before the water boss. I also manipulate luck to avoid bumping the white objects on top of the waterfall for a very long time.
Note that after opening a box, you must stand around for a while before collecting it.
It is probably possible to shave a few more seconds off from the movie.

I watched the movie, and read the submission comments afterwards. It's a clever strategy (probably - I don't know this game well), but I kept continuously asking myself, if an experienced player could duplicate this performance on a real console. I'm unsure about the answer.
It is probably possible to shave a few more seconds off from the movie.
I agree. I expect to see a 15 seconds faster movie the next time. This movie was not boring, but I expect it to be done better. Therefore, I vote 'meh'. Still, it is an ok first-timer movie.

Looking at it on a per-area basis, I'd agree -- I think any individual experienced player can do what is done in the game, one area at a time. The complete run, naturally, would be impossible to accomplish on a console, but with enough effort you could probably come close. There are a number of jumps throughout the game that could be more precise; of course, the controls for the game are klunky, so it's already a feat to play as well as the movie shows.. still, improvements could be made. I think you made a few mistakes, too -- such as at the very beginning of the forest level, with the very first treetop you touch, causing you to slide left briefly.. wouldn't it be faster not to slide at all? (Slides, fwiw, appear to be slower than walking/running/full-speed jumping) In your earlier version, you had a shot that hit one of the final elementals for half its life. I don't think anything like that was in this one -- if it could be duplicated, it'd speed up the final boss significantly, as well.

I touch the tree edge when falling into the forest intentionally. If you land straight on the ground, you get hurt and are stunned for a while. Similarly for falling in the volcano. (Try stopping the movie there, he will sit down and swing his leg for a while because he hurt it.) I also tried jumping versus sliding down trees for the many little ramps that are around. Sliding is faster. When you jump you automatically slow down a lot. After sliding, you get full speed if you touch ground. I think that I did miss a little on some jumps, but others I go a little further to control my momentum. What specifically do you think could not be done on the console? I actually have this game on the console. I have done all of this except for the not getting hit after beating the water boss. Usually you lose all of your life before getting to the sword piece. Of course, I usually get beat up by the boss of the game too, and for convenience I hold down A for jumping instead of releasing the button timed well for each jump. (If you would like, I can post a movie of me playing regular with no rerecords (and most likely dying at the last guy).) I haven't figured out how to control which way a boss moves in response to getting hit. If it is in the same direction, it takes about half his life. I do this to the wind elemental in this movie. I do it to the ground elemental in the prototype movie. That battle is much faster in this version. If I could figure it out better, yes, that battle would be easier and faster.

i thought this run was great and loved watching it. i was a huge fan of this series when i was a kid and spent many hours on it so i'm glad someone finaly did a run of the second game. i did'nt notice any major mistakes or errors that would slow him down, nor did i even see any minor ones. i'm voting yes on this cuz this was a great first attempt at this game. i dont see why anyone would vote no, even more so cuz they think it could be improved by like 10 seconds. i think this should be the first run that sets the time for all others that might come. personaly i think this run is about as fast as its gonna get. unless someone works out a new path that seriously cuts down time, i dont see this game being done any faster than 20 - 30 secs at most.

Indeed this run was very good. Last boss fight looked like there is always room for an improvement but it was already done very well. I'm voting yes.

I'm new here, so I'm not sure if my input counts for much at this point, but I thought this run was nearly flawless. I played this game a lot when I was younger and there's no way I could jump where I wanted to jump that consistently. The jumping is so strange in this game that it's just amazing to watch even that. I vote yes; there certainly is room for improvement, but this was a fun run to watch... at least for an old fan of the game like me.

A few questions (sorry if they seem silly - I've never played the game before) Level 1: -I don't quite get the cloud bouncing thing. You obviously need to jump before you can bounce, but sometimes you jump then bounce to a higher cloud, then jump again to get the bounce again, and sometimes you jump, bounce, bounce, bounce. A good example of this is coming back from the windbane - you jump, bounce, bounce, then jump before you bounce the third time. How's it work? Level 2: -A few times, after you go into a door, you emerge running the wrong direction before you reverse course. I'm sure this is the computer controlling you for a split second, but is it possible to instead enter the door facing the other direction so you come out the other side running the right way and eliminate the backtracking? Level 3: -Do you really need the third magic fill? The spells don't seem to take off that much and you have some left over on the final stage. (EDIT: I just read if you get full magic when you have full health, it refills itself - is this why you get the third?) -I read above the boss can be defeated faster (maybe). You figured out how this works yet? Level 4: -At the very start, you jump over the drop, then jump again into the chicken, then jump a third time to go up the hill. It seems to take a bit of time. Wouldn't it be faster to jump over the gap, run to the chicken, then jump up the hill? -Neat trick on the boss. Does it really save time? Final Level: -The final battle seems to take quite a bit of time. Any chance on finding a way to speed this up? On the plus side however, your jumping through the shafts seems perfectly performed and overall it's a beautiful run.

Comments: I just realized that FCEU works in Wine! (So I can use Blip's patch without difficulty.) This will make my life easier. Yay! Processing! Area 1: Yes, the cloud bouncing is strange. You have to fall from just over 1 level higher to get a bounce, otherwise you do a slower, lower regular jump. Some of the jumps, even at full height do not get me quite high enough to bounce, so I jump lower instead and do a regular jump to start bouncing again. As far as I can tell, it is not possible to completely bounce past the first gap in the cloud with the windbane, so I do a small bounce to make room, then a big bounce to get out. I'm not sure if that is what you meant about bounce, bounce, jump. Area 2: No, after going through a door, you move in a fixed direction briefly. I know of no way to prevent this. It is annoying, especially in the secret room with the 1-up inside the volcano (which I don't visit in this movie) because there is a gremlin right at the entrance that seems to be unavoidable. Area 3: I don't get any magic here. I don't know what you mean. I fill my magic to maximum right before the boss of area 2. I am full when I get the last magic from the fish. I came up with this new strategy since my last movie. It is possible that it could be done faster, but I don't know how. If you have a better strategy, I would love to hear it. Area 4: No, I can't do as you described because you can't jump over the hill as far as I've found. You need to use the double jump trick. It is the same for the hills at the bottom of Ice Fire mountain in area 5. However, the egg in area 1 can be obtained without using it, if you time it just right. (Or, the easy way is to just fall on it, but that would be way too slow for a movie.) No, as noted in my submission, the bug costs me nearly a second to execute, but I think it is more interesting than fighting him the normal, boring way. Area 5: Right. That fight is slow. There is a way to hit the heads and take off about half of their HP with a single hit. I haven't figured out the specifics yet. I use this only once in the movie (to air). It should be possible to do it more times. Note that I use the infinite magic in this final battle. I don't think it has anything to do with the amount of health you have. I think you just need full magic. I got a big time savings by optimizing my cave jumping. I hope that that answers your questions. If not, please reask and post the approximate frames involved from the movie.

i liked it. i use to play this game a lot when i was little and always hated those instant death attacks from nowehere. IMO, seeing this done so quickly was kind of depressing... i played this for a whole summer! hahaha... anyhow, a yes vote. will look much better in my collection than the one done by EvilHeart. I love it. It doesn't feel like 8 minutes because there's a very nice flow and very little time wasted doing things like backtracking or waiting for conditions to change. The final battle looks very impressive because of fighting 4 enemies simultaneously. Because there are so many enemies in that battle, it may be improvable a little bit, but I honestly don't see much not to like about this run. That's a yes.
