This is an improvement of 09:04.17 over the previous movie by Rikku.
For comparison, the fastest non-TAS run (by Siglemic) is 1:44:23 (as of 11/12).

MKDasher's Comments

Yay, done at last! I didn't start TASing this game that long ago, so I have the least experience, but I really want to thank the rest of the team for letting me join and participate in this great project. It's been a really nice experience for me and I'm hoping that everyone enjoys watching the run as much as we did making it!

Nahoc's Comments

Yo, yo, yo! I must say, like Jeremiah and David, I'm really happy to finally see this completed run in the workbench. I had a blast TASing this awesome game with such awesome people.
I'd like to point out that a big part of this project was done by the Japanese TASers. When they were working on the "120 Stars" TAS, they used to go back a lot to redo and improve earlier stars, since they were working on a "perfect" TAS. We (sonicpacker and myself) got tired of being left aside the project, seeing how slow the progress on it was and decided to go along and do our own TAS. MKDasher later joined us. Not gonna lie, we used a lot of their inputs during the making of this movie (but always with permissions) and "quickly" finished the masterpiece that you're about to watch. Of course, some improvements were found during the 3-month period we worked on the project, but it's nothing too big.
We would like to thank all the Japanese SM64 TASers for their hard work and hope they will be able to improve this movie with a more "perfect" v2. Good luck guys!

sonicpacker's Comments

Well it's about damn time. No, but really, working with the community towards finishing this run has given me the best time of my life and I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend my teenage years. I've met so many awesome people and have had the best partners to work with. I'm thankful beyond words and I hope everyone that watches the TAS has a great time! I could go on and write a book about it, but I'll let the run speak for itself. And remember, SM64 isn't even near dead. Stay tuned, haha!

Known Improvements

Of course, in every long TAS, even with the highest standards and level of optimization, nothing is ever perfect. Here's a list of the known improvements. Most were discovered when we were already too far into the run to go back. They will be included in a new version made by a different team of TASers.

  • WF:
    • "Chip Off Whomp's Block" is improvable by 3 frames.
    • "To the Top of the Fortress" is improvable by 7 frames.

This is probably a stupid question, but why is there no encode of this in the TASVideosChannel like every other submission? Just curious.

It definitely is not.

Either Aktan didn't upload it or marked it as hidden and linked the author-provided one...

To whoever keeps changing the YouTube link on the movie page, leave it alone for now. I had a conversation with staff last night and we agreed that the author encode will be the only YouTube one. Thanks.

Wait, how come you get an exception to this rule? 0_o Edit: Youtube

The true encode is still on my channel. There's some confusion with the staff of TASVideos, but this video won't be up much longer. :)
Why take it down? So he can make cash off TASing?

Honestly, the clouds look terrible with the texture filter you used in your encode. Aktan didn't make that mistake. So it's a bit of a shame if other uploads won't be allowed on YouTube, for no good reason (?) This image shows what I mean: http://bildr.no/view/1342187

It's not a mistake. In fact, it's entirely intentional and that's only your opinion. Well over 50% of people like the way the filters look and I get far more positive comments than negative ones regarding quality. Edit: I mean, look at the first 2 comments of the TVC one. Speaks for itself.

Perhaps I came off as arrogant. To me, the clouds look completely wrong with your filters. I just think people should have the choice of which version to watch, which they will have if other uploads are allowed.

Why isn't there 2 youtube links instead? Why does the youtube link have to be your channel? Is it really a problem not linking to the TASVideos channel? What's the point of it if its not going to be used?

I will never understand why people regard "making cash off TASing" as an almost insane and totally absurd idea. You work very very very hard on a TAS in order to create something special and entertaining for other people and usually also for yourself. In the first place people create a TAS for the sake of the TAS and not to submit it to tasvideos.org. In most cases people will submit their runs any way, because it's kind of an honor to have your work published here. But in the end it is up to the TASer himself whether he submits his run, so this website should be happy about every new submission. I'm not doing any TASes because I love tasvideos, but because I love TASing, just something to keep in mind. Over the last year many TASers have managed to become partners on youtube (I haven't done so myself yet, so don't tell me I'm a money-grubbing asshole). This makes it easy to receive a bit of money as a reward for all the hours you invested just to entertain other people. Those people can still watch those runs for free, so the viewer doesn't get any disadvantages through this, while the creater of the run gets a little bonus. So all in all this new situation is clearly better than what we had in the past. Now tasvideos forces every creater of a new submission to not upload his run to his own youtube channel:
A second streaming link to the same content also on YouTube is not allowed
This means the available bonus of receiving a bit of pocket money for my work is kind of gone once I submit my run to this website. A TASer has now to decide between his extra pocket money and his run being published here. But why not allow the TASer to get both? The disadvantage tasvideos has by not publishing the run on the official youtube channel is negligible, because every TASer usually links to tasvideos on their youtube uploads any way. Other than that the official channel only has 2700 subscribers. If I now upload a run done by me to my own channel, way more people will view the submission and in the end way more people will end up here on tasvideos. It's kind of a WIN WIN situation. So why forbid people to upload their TASes on their own channels? Like I said before this is a big disadvantage for the TASer and in many cases even for this website.

The goal of the official tasvideos channel is to bring people from the official channel to tasvideos.org (simply to bring more traffic to this website). The channel is supposed to do so simply by linking to this website, so what's the big disadvantage of linking to the tasvideos.org from a different youtube channel, that is not the offical tasvideos channel? The result is the same. And linking from my own youtube upload to the upload on the official channel would be pointless as well, because that's just making the path for the viewer to finally end up here just harder. Only thing that would make sense would be people linking to the official channel itself (not to the same run on the official channel, but to the channel itself), so the viewer of my upload directly gets access to a huge amount of different TASes. Couldn't we just agree, that every youtube upload from the creaters of each run has to link to this website and also the official youtube channel? The website would benefit way more from that than it does from forcing people not to upload their own runs.

mrgrunz, while your logic sound, you are off base in your interpretation. The words you you quoted do not prohibit anyone from uploading their work to their personal youtube channel, nor does it prohibit you from promoting your work as you see fit (including submitting it to any other site). What it does say is that we will not be linking that upload on tasvideos.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

EDIT: Did I misunderstood something? Is it really forbidden for an author to create his own youtube encode? If it's not then everythings fine. But I'd still say that the author should have the full control of his run, so if he doesn't want it to be uploaded on the official channel the run shouldn't be uploaded there, no matter what the reasons for this are, mainly because it's not a duty to submit a run here in the first place.

I will never understand why so many people don't have any concern about attracting the attention of the copyright holders of the games. The copyright holders might, might, let the copyright infringement pass if you don't make money out of it. They may change their minds if you start earning with their property. (And yes, it is copyright infringement. The video game music has copyright protection, and most probably the graphics too. Just because the owners don't do anything about it doesn't mean it's not infringement. And "fair use" does not cover putting entire songs and large amounts of graphics on youtube.)

There are many gaming channels like Machinima, which have billions of views and thus gather thousands if not millions of dollars (yes, all those big gaming channels are partners), so I can't see how any TAS uploaded to youtube could make the gaming industry suddenly change their whole attitude towards youtube. Especially considering that even the most famous TASes usually don't even get close to reaching one million views (of course we've seen a few exceptions).
