[00:05:06] <Zeupar> that's why I have been saying for a while that the best thing to do about it is make a poll Making a poll because Zeupar wants me to. We think the Recommended icon needs replacing, as it is currently animated and quite distracting. Zeupar wants to use the SMW version in order to follow a consistent theme with the SMW Star and Moon icons. I disagree because it is color-wise and detail-wise stylistically different from those (and other) icons. Options:
  • Current:
  • Current still #1:
  • Current still #2:
  • Zeupar:
  • Mothrayas #1:
  • Mothrayas #2: (my personal pick)
  • Something else (post your own suggestions here)

Putting a question mark on a run seems like a bad idea to me. Are you trying to convey there is something suspicious about the run?

I like the consistency of Zeupar's and the SMW stars and moons. But Current still #1 looks a little better.

I was wondering if the speaker box sprite from SMW would be a better option than Zeupar's. Since you hit it for info in the game.

I thought the star was the "recommended for newcomers" tier and symbol. The "looking for examples of why TASes are great? Try these" icon.

I supported the "newcomer attention" flag because I thought it would release the star quota. It didn't. So, while still picking the most mind-blowing runs for "newcomer", I'm not sure it serves any purpose better than stars. As for the icon itself, animated is really beautiful to me. If someone wants the still one, pick the first still option. It looks more fresh and warm than all the yellow thingies. Mothrayas' ones even look like bile.

To be honest, I have thought the flag wasn't necessary since the very moment you came up with the idea more than a year ago. So, since you, the main supporter of it, just expressed mixed feelings about, I will seize the oportunity to say that I think the best possible outcome for this topic would be getting rid of it. That way we would kill two birds with one stone: We would stop using an annoying flashy flag and stop being redundant. *Goes back to puking new designs* (Just in case people want to keep the flag.)

Yes, I agree with removing it. Too few people were really happy with how and what it was. I still think that some info from the page must be put somewhere to be more accessible (like what TASers find irritating in TASing), but the whole thing serves only some ambiguous goal.

Yeah, now that feos mentions it, the whole "Recommended for newcomers" thing seems kinda redundant, and the Newcomer Corner is not really as visible as it should be. We should just ax the icon and category altogether.

The original point of the newcomer list, is that what is premium isn't the exact same list as what is mind blowing for a newcomer. The point of the newcomer list was to divorce this notion from the star tier. That way we don't pollute the star tier issue with "would a newcomer understand what is going on". The star tier then can be the best of the best as judged by experienced audience and TASers. Also, the star tier is quite large in the context of "I"m new the site and I want to see some cool runs". The newcomer list was more like "If you want to win over someone to TASing, what movie would you pick?" This kind of thinking has a lot of overlap with star criteria, but they aren't the same. A more simple way to think about it: The ten(ish) most audience friendly star runs on the site.

I agree with this.

And I think this is a good solution.

I really think that the star tier should be a representative list that demonstrates TASing, rather than a raw comprehensive list of the highest-rated runs. If you want the highest-rated runs, just list the games in order of rating. This representative list ought to avoid needless redundancy and repetition. For example the same game ought to appear only once (at the very most twice) on the list, rather than all of the branches of that particular game appearing, regardless of how highly rated they may be. Also, if the TASes of two different games are highly similar (one does not show off anything that the other doesn't), it may be better to just include one of them rather than both. The list should also be diverse: Unusual games and techniques ought to appear (if they have some TASing notoriety), even if those particular TASes don't happen to be on the top-100 best-rated list. Even if the star tier isn't a "newcomer's first time list" anymore, I still think it should retain its "manual selection of representative TASes" quality.

Wasn't there also going to be an icon for "fastest world record"? What happened to that?

I suppose the suggestion fell through, mainly because of the difficulty of deciding which one of the several runs of a game ought to be the "official" world record (a discussion that was mainly fueled by the proliferation of arbitrary code execution glitches, and the question of whether those ought to be considered the "fastest WR" or not.) I still think it would be a good idea, though.

So, any feedback about using Zeupar's icon? I really like it.

Is this topic like the Star tier image?I still want an answer to my new Star image guys... Anyways, I like the current one, but if Zeupar's one gets animated, I'll say yes to that one.

Using it for what, exactly? To replace the current star icon? Or something else?

If we do keep the Recommended for Newcomers category, why not do a slightly animated variant of the Star icon? Or am I incorrect in thinking that most-if-not-all RfN movies are also of Star quality? If Star's too lofty, an animated variant moon instead. Either of those do at least keep the quality level requirement in mind. As for the Infobox idea, that one's good too, but should be listed after the tier listing. EDIT: Messageboxes! Of these four, I think the fourth one looks the best. The problem is that the SMW messagebox is too colorful in comparison with the star/moon icons we have now.
