Submission Text Full Submission Page
I used Snes9x 1.51. Why did I not use Bizhawk? Because I can't get it to work with SNES. :( And I COMPLETELY forgot about Lsnes. Only thought about it while submitting. This is also my first full-game TAS.
I only got hit ONCE, in Sunken Ghost Ship. I did it because I didn't want to wait. Hey, Fire Mario means harder challenge in Valley of Bowser :P
My goal is kind of simple. I am not allowed to bother an enemy, with the exception of bouncing off of immortal enemies (spiky enemies) and exception of bosses. This is surprisingly annoying to do, especially in the later parts. I am also not allowed to take the Star Road.
I tried making the run as enjoyable as possible but, I speedrun this game and am still learning the game, thus the run is not perfect. But my goodness, it was hard. I tried multiple tricks but a lot went really bad, but it didn't waste much time. I'd have to say that Yoshi's Island 2 was the easiest (duh) to do, and Sunken Ghost Ship the second easiest. But truly? The level that has the easiest fly was one of the hardest, because I wanted to go UNDER the stage instead of up. I tried the same thing in Forest of Illusion 1 but wasn't able to do it. Chocolate Island 1 was also really annoying, it made me really nerverse. (woo bad english) But for me, the level I had the most fun doing was definitely the final boss. For some reason, after rewatching & recording the movie I laughed a lot at Bowser battle which was... strange. Most of it was done in slow motion, although some parts was done frame by frame.
And that's all what I can say. Note: this is not supposed to beat the WR of No Starworld, as this submission had rules that may not be able to beat the WR. If so, it'd be really hard. I'll probably redo this someday, but not now.

Uh, ok? This seems like it's kind of arbitrary for rules, considering how you DO eventually kill Bowser. Voting No until this is either clarified or there's an encode.

Hi CatlyNat and welcome to TASvideos. For a first TAS, this wasn't bad at all. Unfortunately, this movie isn't up to the site's publication standards. It's very slow and unoptimal in a lot of places, whereas the movies that are submitted here should be as close to perfect as possible. You slow down in a lot of places unnecessarily and use pretty slow level routes. For example, in the Donut Plains ghost house, you can reach the exit a lot quicker by bouncing on one of the Boos. In Valley of Bowser 2, you can clip through the yellow floor moving up and down to clear the section much faster. Instead, you may want to upload it to userfiles and post it to the forum thread to get feedback. If you want to improve this movie, look at some of the other Super Mario World TASes on the site and carefully examine which tricks and strategies they use to complete the levels as quickly as they do. If you don't already know how to use it, you may want to learn how to use frame advance to get optimal input. You also want to use Ram Watch to make sure you're always at the highest speed you can be. We also have a Game Resources page where many Super Mario World tricks are explained. It explains things such as 49 hopping, which is the fastest way to move without a cape. It also has several useful RAM addresses to watch. I hope this helps you improve this movie. Good luck with future attempts.

Most of it was done in slow motion, although some parts was done frame by frame.
I haven't watched your TAS, but this is already a bad point. It's (almost) impossible to create an optimized TAS without using frame advance for the whole run, especially on SMW where the optimized movement method involves frame perfect jumping. Looking at your submission text though, you seem to have put some effort into your making your run both fast and entertaining, which is a really cool attitude :D Also, don't forget to check other TASes and RTA speedruns, and look for info about how to optimize your game: SMW has a really informative resources page on this site (http://tasvideos.org/GameResources/SNES/SuperMarioWorld.html), I think you should take a look at it, you'll probably learn a lot from it :D

Welcome to TASVideos, CatlyNat! After watching the full movie, although this movie wasn't very optimised, I'm going to expand on scrimpeh's reply: in the technical side, your movie is impressive for a first movie, and your attitude is very cool. You can use the userfiles to submit your WIPs, and I hope seeing a completed TAS from you in the future.

I supposed by the number of rerecording this movie wasn't controlled frame by frame.

Considering Contra had a "pacifist" run where bosses were killed I could see this arbitrary challenge being accepted IF the run was also well optimised and entertaining. So I wouldn't count off this idea right away as someone might be able to improve on it and make it more fun. But with that said I can't think of many times when it is hard to avoid hurting enemies in the game, avoiding enemies is usually always the best way to go about a platformer after all. So this doesn't seem so much like a challenge as much as it does just a normal run with missing a few speed improvements available from using enemies to increase speed. I'm sure if you had a chat with users who love to TAS Super Mario World they would be very good sources for improving your future runs of this game, since it is a popular game to TAS so there should be more than enough help available for it.
Enjoys speedruns but hasn't actually tried making any yet.

The reason I didn't bounce off of the boo like I always do in RTAs was because I didn't want to touch the enemy, as I also wanted to try and not bother with enemies at all, although I did change my mind when it came to chainsaws and whatever the spiky blade guys are called. And I tried doing the VOB2 clip, I did do it but I did do it bad. The run was pretty bad, and I will try again after I learn a bit more. I still am fairly new to SMW. I just don't understand why I'm not able to use Bizhawk. The only Out of Bounce clips I can do is the easy clip in FOI2, and 2 times I accidentally clipped out of bounce in a run (twice with yoshi lol) and I wasn't careful with my speed. I definitely need to be more careful next time, but I'll make sure I'll improve the run and make it more enjoyable next time. Well, at least I'll try. Edit: oh, and I can clip OOB in VOB2, which I did in my run here (tbh that was my first time ever doing it) Also, I don't know if it's possible to beat Bowser without being throwing Mechakoopas so if it isn't I don't think it should make my run void. But looking back at Chocolate Island 1... Yeah, my run is definitely void and definitely wouldn't count. I didn't notice I killed an enemy. So yeah.

I'm just not sure if 'pacifist' is a good branch for SMW... not killing anything might reduce the entertaining value of the movie. But you should not give up! SMW has a lot of known tricks, and some of them are really easy to pull of, like the hopping glitch. Check out the SMW resources page http://tasvideos.org/GameResources/SNES/SuperMarioWorld.html. And I also have a lot of trouble with bizhawk, and prefer to use lsnes. Get a lua script, the resources page links to them, and they are very helpful in learning tricks and how the game works. Good luck in your next try!

Wow, that temp encode sounds like we're back in 2009! (Next time, instead of choosing an Audio Playback Rate of like 8 KHz, choose 48 KHz. It will not only sound better, it will also prevent that audio-video-desync, because even a temp encode should have that sync)
Warning: Might glitch to credits I will finish this ACE soon as possible (or will I?)

Welcome to TASVideos, CatlyNat. A few comments on: 1) Timing: It begins when the video game is turned on, not when you gain control over Mario (as in RTA). You lost time in the initial menu. 2) Goal: Your goal isn't very good, because it gives the impression that you won't hurt any enemy, not even the bosses. When you say "I didn't want to touch the enemy, as I also wanted to try and not bother with enemies at all",you make things more arbitrary yet. 3) Optimization: You should use frame advance all the time inside the level, because SMW runs are already very optimized. For instance, in Yoshi Island 3 you finished the level with clock 258, but it's easy to end with 259 in RTA.

I wouldn't at all mind if we published a "No Star World" run, but adding the "no harassing enemies" restriction makes this run's goals too arbitrary, IMO.

Nope, they're just dead zombies created by ... uhm... By Sanik. Going by that though, I should have hit the Mechakoopas.

At first I just wanted to do a simple level-by-level thingy speedrun that didn't use slow down nor frame advance, and thus it wasn't supposed to be a TAS. And I thought I had to delete a file first which is another thing. Didn't really had a save state before that so I couldn't rewind. In fact, I started it off as a normal speedrun challenge (trust me, not killing a single enemy except bosses may sound easy, but it's actually a challenge if done RTA) and failed easily, and after a few failed tries I decided to do a TAP (if Tool-Assisted Playthrough is a thing that is). But after Yoshi's Island 3 I started using slow down of 75%, in Butter Bridge 2 I used 50% slow-down which may have made me not notice I was going so slow while flying, and in Forest of Illusion 1 I started with 25% slow-down. I'll soon restart my TAS and hopefully I'll make it faster, though next time I'll probably be doing frame-by-frame the whole time which will probably be faster that way (well, RTA is much slower lol).

I thought about changing the goal name and I'll probably do that. I don't know what would sound the best, but for now I'll keep it as no kill until I find something that does work.

I got 258 because I suck. And also because I used part of my RTA strategy. And my strategy at the end is different than other peoples' strategy, kinda slower. That's all I can say for now~ I think that before I'll redo this TAS I'll try doing a simple TAS like for example, 11 exits (meh) or All Switches. Maybe an All Castles. Edit: I can't press Y (Q), B (X), Frame Advance (Space), Right (Right) & Up (Up) at the same time which is needed for swimming. Does anyone know why that happens? The (boo) part is the key that button is assigned to and it annoys me I can't do all what I can.

Try moving your frame advance button to something other than space and it should work with the keys you're pressing.

I got Bizhawk working and fell in love with the TASing features instantly and I think I have the issue not letting me press soooo many buttons at the same time fixed. Gotta say, it's maybe too different, but the features that it has is wow. And it fixes my problem for underwater. I'm glad I got Bizhawk to work.

I'll do a No Starworld/No Cape and when I'm done with that I'll hopefully be used to Bizhawk (I'm currently doing Yoshi's Island 4), then I'll redo a no kill run and try to make it as good as possible. Again, I'll TRY, that does not mean I'll do good. Yes, I am using Frame Advance for the whole level this time. But one thing is for sure: my second try will be faster, better and hopefully more entertaining. I've always wanted to TAS and I randomly did this TAS after numerous tries of doing a no kill run in RTA. And then, after that, I took TASing seriously. It's fun to do a TAS but it's pretty hard... But I'll try the hardest I can on the second try of No Kill No Starworld, and also probably rename the category to make it sound right. My goal with this category I'm doing is probably to make this run faster than the No Starworld WR. And I will not give up (unless No Starworld suddenly gets an INSANE WR.)

Seeing a lot of category debate, maybe the "small only" run could be complimented by also being a pacifist run? Not collecting power-ups but not killing enemies either.
I'm not as active as I once was, but I can be reached here if I should be needed.
