The IRC<->Discord bot is open source, by the way. Some admin could be responsible for keeping it running. https://github.com/42wim/matterbridge/

Is that by any chance the same guy that's on WinXP and Opera 12 in 2016?

Once again, only Bisqwit's post is sensible in a relatively long thread. Vendor lock-in is a serious problem. Discord Inc. was founded by Jason Citron, a serial entrepreneur who starts companies with no intention to keep them, selling them off and leaving, causing them to quickly die off, like what happened with OpenFeint. This is without mentioning that OpenFeint had its own privacy and security concerns. If Discord suddenly dies like it seems likely it will, its communities' members suddenly become confused vagrants. IRC's distributed relay network system doesn't have this problem. Also, the one singular proprietary client provided for connecting using the proprietary Discord protocol(s) is extremely bloated and lacks any sort of GUI customization. Also, it can't handle resizing while keeping the scroll bar at the bottom, hides chat first when resizing so it can't ever be compact, can't do any local logging so reading backlog requires waiting for each tiny section to download, can't do regular expression or timestamp log searching. Also, no custom highlights so you have to use their ridiculous "mention" system to beep someone, no timestamp formatting, automatic media previewing by default even if you don't want it to be previewed (spoiler or cool surprise, for example). You can get the backlog stuff with a BNC server anyway, so Discord doesn't win there either. Discord is just an incredibly bad choice and I'm surprised anyone who has used IRC for long enough to learn anything about it would advocate Discord. Edit: Oh crap. I didn't realize the date on the most recent post here. I feel like I've accidentally dredged up something that had already settled down. Sorry! :x

It hasn't yet actually, the discussion spawned again recently on IRC.

An official Discord channel has been created. However, it's not a replacement for the TASVideos IRC, it's simply an alternative. Only the TASVideoAgent is mirrored from IRC, no IRC mirroring between the Discord channel and IRC is being done. The TASVideos IRC channel is still the preferred and recommended way to communicate with other members of the site. Invite link: https://discord.gg/GySG2b6

I will strongly reiterate there will be no migration from IRC to Discord nor any other fad. However, for those that want to use Discord, we now offer a channel there. Further, we are not making any guarantees to any kind of long term maintenance and upkeep of the Discord channel nor the bot there.

The thing I like with discord is not the voice chat. It's not the history system. It's not the user interface. It's the fact that you get to format the text. IRC has meh text formatting at best. It even does syntax highlighting for many programming languages. Another nice thing is automatic previews of links and uploaded files.

IRC doesn't define formatting, that's up to the clients. Some clients are highly configurable, others are not. You can easily make your own client and configure things the way you like it.

Vendor lock-in is not a relevant problem to us as long as it is used as an alternative, and not as a dependency.

As most of TASVideos staff now is on Discord and nearly no one uses IRC, it would be interesting to hear the people who posted in this thread debate against themselves from 4-5 years ago, to hear what made them change their mind. :)

I'm not staff, but I posted in here! I stand by everything I've said! Considering the incident, I think it would be foolish to migrate to Discord and drop IRC support. Most of the posts I made here were asking people to give proper reasons why Discord server maintenance would be worth it.
Warning: Might glitch to credits I will finish this ACE soon as possible (or will I?)

Interesting opinion from someone extremely active on Discord, and I can't remember the last time I saw you post something on IRC.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

That doesn't contradict anything I've said though.
