May I suggest calling it a "genocide" TAS? :D

Just "max kills" really. You can't kill some enemies.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

Is killing all enemies is something challenging? Enough tearing SMB with every ever possible objectives! Play sth different, guys =)
TASing is like making a film: only the best takes are shown in the final movie.

Not sure if this is right to put here, but I was looking through the "Things to add in the future" list in the Game Resources page for this game: http://tasvideos.org/GameResources/NES/SuperMarioBros.html There's a lot here, but some of them don't seem to be well-explained. Here are some questions I have, I might be able to write some descriptions for some of them when I have the time (once I upload a thing): --- Does the "items not appearing" refer to a glitch where items don't spawn from boxes (something I didn't know was possible), or the much more benign but more well-known glitch where spawning an item makes the current item on-screen disappear? There's just one called "trampoline glitch". What? Why is "ducking in water" an entry? Sure, you can do it, but it's not broken or anything (to my knowledge), and I don't think anything weird happens if you do it (though you can use it to get stuck in the wall in the underwater areas) I'm pretty sure "Win/lose at same time" and "Flagpole death finish (die continuously and win)" are the same thing, no? Unless the former refers to castle levels, in which case it should specify as such. What is "Jumping Koopas moving unusual directions"? Pretty sure "Scaling walls vertically" is just repeated wall jumps, correct? "Falling downward through certain block patterns". Um, what block patterns, specifically? "Never ending levels (no timer trigger)". This has to refer to hacks, right? Because I'm pretty sure this can never happen in the vanilla game.

You may submit your run here, but make sure you have read the rules to making a movie before you submit. Just a heads-up that this movie by HappyLee is currently the fastest run of Super Mario Bros.
I'm Asumeh, semi-expert SMB1 TASer. :) Check out some of the TASes I don't submit/upload to TASVideos on my YouTube channel, if you'd like. In progress: - Extra Mario Bros. (redo) (with HappyLee and w7n) - I'm currently assisting with finding improvements before the boss. On hold; we're currently struggling to confirm that we have the fastest route. Some debugging may also help with finding glitch exits, but neither of us are experts in that field. - Record my older TASes (excluding any obsolete TASes) and upload to YouTube.

(I don't know if this is new for TAS too or only RTA) https://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/cm4aot/new_time_save_found_in_super_mario_bros/ " Right after Taven Webb got the new WR, GTAce99 found a new way to despawn a plant in 8-2, saving enough frames for a new framerule (0.35s) save. For now it requires a specific framerule, which sadly doesn't have an optimal BBG shot, but we should be able to find one that works pretty soon. You have to do some weird fast accel (which is difficult RTA but very doable) at the start of the level to get the pattern. You still have to slow down, but not enough to lose this new framerule. 454 might be possible! https://twitter.com/kosmicd12/status/1158157331244306432?s=21 "

Does this mean any% is getting improved?

I guess not TAS, if this is accurate: "Just to note, the TAS 8-2 framerule was already theoretically possible to be done by a human (just ridiculously hard). The significance of this discovery is that it removes the need to do what was probably the most difficult part of the level when going for the framerule save. Jumping over the piranha plant in the pipe after the large gap is extremely difficult when trying to do it in the most perfectly optimal manner, which is needed to save the framerule. But now, humans don't have to worry about executing this jump, making the time save much more viable for RTA. (It's still a very difficult framerule to save, and probably won't be attempted in runs until it's needed to improve the record.)" But this gives new opportunities to improve RTA any%, which is exciting in its own right.

Well, kudos to GTAce99 for finding that new timesave :) And more or less, I have to say that I do agree with the fact that the current fastest run of this game can't be improved even with that in play. However, my instincts are telling me it's possible. From what I saw in this video (credits to nobodycallsmetubby): Link to video (At the 364 IGT mark) Despawning that piranha plant would have to do with having a bullet bill, a paratroopa, and two piranha plants onscreen before the five-block pit jump.

Great find! I think 4-2 needs some testing too, because I watched it a while ago: Link to video If we could despawn that first piranha plant without having the fire flower...
My homepage --Currently not much motived for TASing as before...-- But I'm still working.

That new strat in 8-2 is for RTA only, nothing to do with TAS. GTAce99's finding is not enough, because you need to come up with a whole and stable setup for a possible time save (I'm working on it). Despawning that Piranha Plant in 8-2 (or anything, really) is theoretically possible, but I couldn't imagine anyone crazy enough to use it as an RTA strategy, because it requires 3 Bullet Bills at the same frame. That's right, 3. GTAce99 got it by accident, and it almost couldn't be got on purpose, because it's such a rare opportunity. 4-2 needs no further testing. It's not possible because 4-2 has no Bullet Bills.

By the way, why 2 obsolete warpless TASes in 18:37.48 and 18:38.22 don't have star tier? They surely deserved it.

Cause you're not asking on the appropriate thread about it?

I'd assume it's simply cheating. He used almost all my inputs, and probably changed Mario's speed after the wall jump.

Yes, an experienced SMB players know well no improvement can be found on 8-4. I think it is fake, either.

Probably because those runs didn't provide as much entertainment as the current fastest warpless TAS.

Took a look at it a couple of days ago. All I can say is that it's not an improvement, just a downright copying of the inputs from HappyLee's current fastest run for the game.

I just founded myself combination for fast mushroom grab in 1-3 to accelerate to full speed after it, done in WR and MrWint's TAS and it is literally hardest thing that I done so far. It is A LOT harder then even optimizng 8-4 turnaround. And as I already knew that it is possible, it was even easier for me then for me then to discover it from zero. I'm writing this post, because there is no much about it in WR submission, because it was probably easier then some other things, lol, but for people to know - it is not obvious at all to save 1-3 framerule. Thank you for the work, HappyLee and MrWint!

I felt that I wanted to... (You may move this post to a more appropriate fourm if you need to.) Here are my runs of Super Mario Bros. that I have uploaded to the userfiles so far (excluding any that have been bested): 1. STAGEO%, warpless 2. Zero coins, warps 3. AEPLLG + GIIIVY 4. 10 Walljumps (Version 2) 5. AEPLLG + GIIIVY, warpless And here are runs of hacks of the game (including any "improvements" of the original game): 1. Summer (SMB1 Hack) 2. Parallel Air (SMB1 Hack) 3. Super Gothic Bros. (SMB1 Hack) 4. Always Big (SMB1 Hack) 5. Angry Marionao (SMB1 Hack) 6. Super Hageo Bros. (SMB1 Hack) 7. Down Mario (SMB1 Hack) 8. Mutya (SMB1 Hack) 9. Ret's Escape Puzzle World (SMB1 Hack) “World 4-4 Ending” 10. XXXX (SMB1 Hack) “Luigi, Normal Quest” 11. Mario Mafia 2 (SMB1 Hack) “Mario, warps” (Version 2) 12. Mario Mafia 2 (SMB1 Hack) “Mario, warpless” I won't be linking the ROMs as I wish not to risk breaking the forum rules. You may encode any of my runs featured if you wish, as long as you give me credit for creating the original runs. As for this post, I will be updating it whenever I have finished a new run or if any of my existing runs get obsoleted (by me or any other TAS'ers).

Here is my .fm3 compliation of perfect subpixel optimization for any% TAS everywhere. It can be easily transformed to .fm2. I'm not sure if 8-2 plant despawn possible on perfect framerule, so it can be unbeatable, what you think? https://www.dropbox.com/s/te2xkluo5u87cuj/ultimate.fm3?dl=0

The final frame seems to be 17868. At this frame you touch the axe and all objects disappear (on the frame 17869 everything appears again and then the bridge destruction starts). Unfortunately, it provides no improvement over HappyLee's TAS which also reaches this condition on the frame 17868.
TASing is like making a film: only the best takes are shown in the final movie.

This is in 4-1 and starts at frame 4168 Here is a link to the .fm3 (most of it is HappyLee's TAS for efficiency's sake) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Wsxnyf46l7dVK1_8cMHBZ9uaoGWi4FPS/view?usp=sharing
