Does the .m64 file format record SRAM? If it does you can still record from reset, just with characters unlocked as they would if you reset your actual console... that would probably be more acceptable than recording from a savestate. (Besides, savestates are HUGE.) If not, an exception may still be able to be made. Ultimately the decision doesn't fall to us lowly folks. =P

I don't think it has an option to start a movie with SRAM, but I can't imagine it's TOO hard to add it.

i think the savestates are huge because they include the sram with them or something

No, savestates are large because they literally store the entire state of the system - what's in the RAM, what bits are running through each component, as well as the SRAM. The SRAM itself is a tiny little thing.

Hey, could the shield roll be used to pass obstacles faster in Race to the Finish? And if you're going to fail Fox's Board the Platforms, you could drop straight through the platform rather than run off.

rolling takes way more frames than short hopping, and fox can't fall through that platform.

Um, I played your movie up to Board the Platforms, stopped it, and pushed down, and Fox fell through.

Just an idea.. But maybe someone could make a fight movie (don't need to submit it), with a great variety of attacks, dodges and stuff like that.. It would be very nice ;)

Like the Streetfighter movies? More like a crazy tutorial run, filled with death defying stunts and of course, the required mocking of the computer?

I would rather see that for Pro Wrestling maybe.

Mocking a computer? Oh I can see it now: "Oh, damn you P4, I've gotta throw the ROCK's Elbow on your" "AHH you fought back with a BSOD" "AHH, SUSE got a virus!"

I propose to have a competition where each competitor submits a sequence of key presses to an independent thrid party. A match is set up and each player is given the opening movie, to which they add a few frames of input for only their character. After a certain number of frames, players are given their opponet's moves. 10 might be a good number of frames. The process is repeated till one player dies. The challenge would be to guess what your opponet will do in those 10 frames and respond in part. Someone with hexediting experience would need to moderate this. Also, the technique is not limited to smash, but it would make a good test of the method. If anyone is interested or confused as to what I mean, please respond. I think that people would like to see their favorite speed runners face off in such battles, if they turn out ballanced.

Are you saying that for those ten frames the opponent gets to have input your character will have zero input? That seems like it would interfere a lot with basic combinations etc.

So it would be like this? Player A makes inputs. Inputs are hex-edited in. Player B views the movie thus far. Player B makes inputs. Inputs are hex-edited in. Player A views the movie thus far. Repeat?

Kholdstare and asteron, I guess the chess analogy is limited. The turn would be taken at the same time. Both players would submit input for the same n frames simultaneously. Each would do it blind as to their opponet's input.

Now imagine a game where your favorite Nintendo characters fight each other... in real time! That would be a lot more fun.

Wait, so... would one player move while the other doesn't, or would they both move during the same ten frames?

So... wouldn't this eliminate blocking, and introduce item clashes (two people trying to pick up the same item, blind to each other's movements as you said)?

I guess when you submit you can't be sure of what exactly will happen for those 10 frames... if your opponent is closer to the item you should assume they are going to go for it and take measures to evade or stop them.... Actually that makes the game a lot more interesting... but seems difficult to manage. I think you would have to setup a website where the two could send in hex moves and let a script merge the two together into a movie file. Seems like a lot of work though and Im not sure how many people would play...

My highest score for the single-player games are all 999999999, but that's because of the continue bug. What is this "continue bug"?
